What about: 2002 Revenge of Shinobi (GBA) ;D Sorry couldn't resist. Is the GBA Revenge of Shinobi really worse than Cyber Shinobi? I'm horribly curious. Of course Cyber's still better than that awful port of Shadow Dancer.

I think so, but I haven't played either in a long time. I just remember actually finishing a few stages in Cyber Shinobi but I couldn't even bring myself to finish the first level in that awful GBA game. You should give it a try on an emulator! It's one of those games that is so bad that you need to play it to believe it, just don't do it for more than five minutes ;D

www.joystiq.com/2011/05/26/shinobi-3ds/Joe Musashi already had a son. His name was Hayate. It doesn't look as bad as I was expecting it to be though, but I'm still skeptical. Also, why are they just calling "Shinobi"? I don't like when supposed sequels recycled their titles.

"progenitor" = Joe Musashi's father. Looks like they're going back in time.
In the duel of the terrible games, I'd say Revenge of Shinobi is SLIGHTLY better than Cyber Shinobi, which is practically unplayable.

I must have misread that part. Which still doesn't make sense, since Nakahara (the final boss in the first Shinobi) is Joe Musashi's dad, unless Jiro adopts the alias of "Nakahara" later on or something.

So they're going the prequel route, eh?
Re: the trailer. That was pretty cool. I don't understand a lot of the nitpicky bitching at the developers for getting the timeline wrong. Pretty sure Sega's PR department handles that sorta thing. So blame them if anything.

That was a pretty cool trailer - digging the visual style that they went for and the crazy effects, although I'm not a fan of the score (or maybe damage?) numbers that keep on popping up.

ca.kotaku.com/5804558/shinobi-returns-to-its-roots-for-3ds-outingOh dear. That's . . .well, I just . . . . . .it's two thousand god damned eleven, so I guess my question is why does this look like a first-gen PS1 beta? I really want this to be good, because a 2D Shinobi would be pretty awesome and Hard Corps: Uprising proved that you could do a lot with traditional 2D modes of gameplay without totally screwing them up ( Moon Diver? well . . .let's not go there) and I would like more of them please, but this? This feels like they outsourced it to the We Didn't Try Very Hard Company. Then again, maybe this is very early and it'll have the rough edges smoothed off before it hits the street and harsh judgments shouldn't be made quite so swiftly, but my God, look at that shit.

It looks okay. Nothing in the footage strikes me as particularly impressive, and there's a few of those "milking the past" moments that's common in these "retro revivals". (i.e. surfing sequence, horse-riding, etc.) But it's certainly shaping up to be better a Shinobi game than RoS on GBA. Also, kudos for tipping their hat to Shinobi 2K2 with the red scarf.

Looks as much like Strider as it does Shinobi.
This might almost be enough to get me a 3DS, but as noted the visuals are lacking. And if I have a problem with the quality of the renders, that says something.

It looks rather Shinobi-ish to me. They've got the throwing knives down, and the hack 'n' slashing has a different rhythm from Strider.

Looks great, except for the graphics. They don't look that good.

Those graphics are unacceptable.
