i like the graphical style; it's got a nice low rest-kind-of-cellshaded charm to it. this strikes me as the type of 'fast' playing game, so i don't think i'll be worrying about the graphical quality of the backgrounds as much. as long as the character animations have that kind of 'weight' that the original shinobi games had, it looks pretty stellar to me.
honestly, seems like the kind of game that's going to get crap reviews that people that can y'know, actually appreciate videogames will love and understand.
edit: also from what i can tell, a lot of the environments in the trailer look wholly untextured, so maybe it's not as far along as the trailer would have us believe

The graphics seem like the kind that look like total ass in stills, but a lot better in motion.

So I'm playing that GBA RoS thing.
It has more in common with Kenseiden. Actually it has more in common with goddamn Blackthorne than it does Shinobi. Why they slapped a name like that on it, I have no fucking clue.
The level art and the music are actually pretty nice though. I will put it above Cyber Shinobi, as it is bland and awkward but not borderline unplayable.

If anyone is a Shinobi fan here, I would recommend getting the Legend of Joe Musashi music box set, which has the soundtracks to every Shinobi game for the arcade, Master System, Mega Drive, and Game Gear. It even has the soundtrack to Shinobi World, the Alex Kidd crossover game. The booklet contains quite a lot of interesting information about the series from the directors of all the major games. Oddly enough, Shin Shinobi Den is excluded. Granted, the commentaries are in Japanese though, but I may end up translating some of the stuff one of these days. vgmdb.net/album/14143

They also excluded "Nightshade", which has never gotten an official soundtrack release. Still a sweet compilation, though.

Not the biggest Shinobi fan in the world but I do enjoy some of the games.
Why does everyone seem to dislike Mega Drive Shadow Dancer though? (Or at least think it's inferior to The Super Shinobi?) I happen to think it's the second best Shinobi game (after Super Shinobi II, not counting the polygon Shinobies) , and definitely superior to the arcade version.

The graphics kind of remind me of Dreamcast-era graphics.

I finished it recently and while I don't dislike per se, it's not a favorite of mine either. I thought it was too short, not very challenging (unless you're playing on the hardest setting with disabled shurikens) and a step back from both, the Super Shinobi games and the Game Gear titles. I understand they based the game system on the arcade Shinobi games (one-hit per life, Rolling Thunder-style floor jumping and screen-clearing megacrush attacks), since they give a special thanks to the developers of both arcade games in the credits, but without challenging stages and bosses it feels way too bland and simple. I wouldn't even consider it better than arcade version, since some of the stages and two of the bosses in the Genesis version are just watered-down versions of the ones in the arcades game. I will admit that the input method for the dog attack is better in the Genesis version though.

I love Genesis Shadow Dancer (moreso than the arcade game) although the final boss was pretty lame. I bought the import version in 1990 and still have it. I agree with jonny about the Super and GG games being better but at its time of release, only Revenge was available out of those four.

Just saw the JP site. And, surprisingly, they DO have a complete timeline. Including Shinobi World, Cyber Shinobi and the GBA Revenge of Shinobi. With asterisks indicating those weren't released over there. Besides showing the original Japanese artwork, they also have some US and European artwork too (from left to right, US Shadow Dancer, US/EU Shinobi World, EU Cyber Shinobi, US GG Shinobi 2 and EU Revenge of Shinobi)
EDIT: They also have links to those that are on the VC.

Because Sega of Japan knows their shit better than whoever composed that trailer for Griptonite or Sega of America. Why shouldn't they? They're the parent company.

I like MD Shadow Dancer but after getting a taste of the Arcade Shadow Dancer, I do agree with Jonny2x4 that the level design in the arcade looks a bit more interesting and varied. There is a certain sense of straightforwardness in Mega Drive SD that prevents it from being a superlative game. Here's for hoping the dev won't churn out a metroidvania game with the Shinobi tagged name tagged over it, :/ I know original Shinobi and Super Shinobi's isn't exactly Ninja Gaiden or Strider/Osman in pacing,. Original Shinobi is one of the fastest moving games ever made. At least the arcade version is.
