I'd say C or D, maybe have the list at Top 750

I must admit I'm a bit disappointed about the poll in general. I was expecting more western games making a breakthrough in the top. After a quick-look at all of the individual lists, I assume that around 80% of the suggestions are in fact from japanese games. In principle, that's not bad at all - hey, this is japanese-centric board and they all like playing games from the land of the rising sun. Agreed. I was tempted to make my list all Western games to try and counteract the bias (I think my list was around 45% or so Western) but voting strategically kind of seems like cheating. The lack of Commodore computer love makes me sad. I'm sure a lot more people would be into that stuff if they would expose themselves to it. Anyway, I applaud the effort being put into this whole project, and I love how it is set up with the youtube links. Even though I didn't have that much time to compile my list, I'm still going to spend a lot of time youtubing and expanding my own taste in game music thanks to these threads. Hopefully others will, too.

Here's what I ended up doing: the total list ended up being something like 1100 or so. 1000 and change is okay, but 1100 is a bit high. So I cut all of the songs that only had a single 3 point vote. That ended up putting the total around 950, which was a little too low, so went through and up-voted a couple of the ones I had just cut to get it back up to 1000. Keeping in mind the goal of the project, I gave precedence to the more unusual stuff (European Genesis/Amiga/C64, doujin, etc.). Once I dig up some more Youtube links, it should be ready to post soon!
(I'm still going to be compiling and posting links to all of the songs that didn't get into the top 1000 though).

Assigning three points for our top five selections was an excellent way to give prominence to each voter's favourite music. I tried to listen to as much of other voter's selections as I could, and incorporate them into my list if I liked them enough, but I doubt that many voters did the same with my list. So my top five selections probably won't register on even the top 1000 list. Subsequently, if you up-vote certain selections, how can you contend that your own preferences didn't affect the outcome? Perhaps having the community vote for fifty out of these remaining 100 selections would have been a more balanced solution. The reason that I participated was to compile a list of my favourite VGM for myself. So it doesn't really matter to me that the music I chose was ignored by everyone else. However, I felt that I should point to some of the issues that I noticed in your procedure. Still curious to see what the final list will look like.

No, I've had the same concerns as you. The reality is that it will be advertised as a Top 1000 list with like another 100 stragglers or however else there are left. The issue is more when it comes to compiling and tagging the MP3s - posting the links isn't an issue because I have (most of) them already, but getting 1000 MP3s is already a fairly huge ordeal when I've already spent at least a good 8 hours just editing the spreadsheet, and if I can cut down 100 of them, then all the better. Heck, just now I realized that your vote for that Chinese pirate game is actually considered a vote for the Phoenix Wright song...there are few issues remaining like that that I need to hunt down to make it as accurate as possible.
I had considered the second poll, but I'm not sure how many people care about the whole extra step of the process for what amounts to the bottom 4% of the list. Running it feels a little bureaucratic when I have other things to work on at the moment.

I completely forgot to include the music from Dr. Mario. Those were some catchy songs.

Both Dr. Mario songs are on the list anyway, so it's all good.

*Rolls eyes towards username* I'd be very upset if Dr. Mario hadn't made it.
I tried to look at other users' lists too, and quite a few of my songs were from other lists on like the first two pages of the voting thread. I never did make a full list of 100, I still had a few spots left I was going to use for songs I culled from other lists. But at some point it just became way to much to go through.
How many votes were there in total, anyway? Judging by the size of the thread, it looks like there were easily over 10,000 votes. Seems like quite the decent turnout. Not to mention all the new users (such as myself) it seems to have attracted.

There were 11,543 points in total, so around 10,000 total votes sounds about right.

The Western-only voting thread mentions only North American and European composers are allowed. Are Aussies and Kiwis okay to include as well?
I was hoping we could pick 100 games again but I understand the reasoning behind having half the amount this time.

Maybe someone already said this, but anyway...
Just an thought, but maybe there could be an annual poll? I mean, more and more games come out every year, and as a result, video game tracks; plus as everyone plays more games (older and newer), they are introduced to more music, and with that, their opinions can alter, not to mention the fact that people can warm up more to tracks that they previously didn't think as much of originally.
With so many variables that come up as time goes on, the results of this poll are ultimately temporary.

Even South America, if that comes up. Maybe someone already said this, but anyway... Just an thought, but maybe there could be an annual poll? With so many variables that come up as time goes on, the results of this poll are ultimately temporary. That's the plan! I want to do one every few months - after this one, probably an 8-bit chiptune poll (C64/NES/MSX/TG16), then an FM synth poll (Genesis/X68k/PC88/various arcade), then cycle back around to an "all encompassing one". I'm hoping it will build enough interest in the long run so there will be more votes for the second "top 1000 VGM tracks of 2012" poll.

This is a complicated case: Herr Mannelig is a Swedish ballad that got picked up by many Bands, one of them the German medieval/metal band In Extremo, and several versions are also on their CDs. That very band also gives a virtual concert in the first Gothic (similar to David Bowie in The Nomad Soul), and it was kind of a big deal and advertising point when the game came out. www.youtube.com/watch?v=D6X6R2SWtVUDoes this qualify?

I added some tracks from Pathologic, but I don't actually know whether the composer is from the European part of Russia. Mirror's Edge is one game with an excellent soundtrack that completely slipped my mind during the last poll. Would have voted for Still Alive, too, if we would vote for individual arrangements, but I detest the singing in the Lisa Miskovsky version too much to allow myself to give points to that.
