Ironically, for a video game music-centric poll, there's not too many votes for songs from music/rhythm games outside of The Legendary Theme from Gitaroo Man.

That's because most rhythm games use licensed music (which is against the rules in the contest). Rhythm Heaven, Gitaroo Man, Space Channel 5, and the Parappa/Umjammer series are the only rhythm games that spring to mind that don't use licensed music extensively.

I was tempted to list Monkey Steals the Peach's "Guitar Hero" used in the original game ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sw5vSeT5hY4 ), but felt there were better tunes worth mentioning...

Not so, since Konami's Bemani titles, Pentavision titles, Pump It Up, Taiko no Tatsujin, and more have plenty of music made in-house or contracted exclusively for their games. Yeah, Bemani games always had a pretty even distribution of licensed and original tracks. It's mostly the American Guitar Hero / European Sing Star schools that are so much focused on licensed music (though Samba de Amigo was rather "bad" in that regard, too).

I actually really enjoyed playing The Cup of Life on Samba de Amigo...

Heya I've been torn regarding the Metal Gear Solid main theme... yes, it's magnificent, but it's not original. It's very heavily borrowed from Sviridov's "The Snowstorm". www.youtube.com/watch?v=8JL4JXEv-RY. Are we deeming it acceptable for the poll?

Konami's official stance sort of became that it's its own work (even after removing it from 3 and 4), so yeah, it's fine.

One of the trailers features the MGS Main Theme (track 2 on disc 1 of the OST) near the end, done with a nice acoustic guitar style. And if we want to get really technical, it's also on the MGS1 OST near the very end, though it's not in the actual game at all.

I forgot about them, since I'm not usually into sugary J-pop. That said, I love most of Pop'n Music's...music. That may just be because I love playing Pop'n Music, however.

Of course, everyone is just holding off until the very last moment to make it more exciting.

There are a handful of more votes over at NeoGAF: neogaf.net/forum/showthread.php?p=31388224#post31388224Plus one dude who posted like a top 5 at STC. And it looks like NeoGAF did something vaguely similar like three years ago: www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=346212But I think the way we're working it allows for a much greater variety of songs. They just kept narrowing it down further and further until it got to 20. That list is like all Square/Nintendo, whereas this one is shaping up to be much more varied.

I'll be honest I was expecting almost all Nintendo/Square when I found out about this list.
Good thing they proved me wrong.
Also how long do you think it'll take to tally everything and how/where will you post the results?
