Ooh, Wasteland. I've been planning to play that since I finished New Vegas over the summer; apparently F:NV takes a lot from its ancestor story-wise.
I'm going to be desperately busy until Wednesday, but after that I'd like to join. Is it still okay for people to just drop in?

Yeah, feel free to join us when you can! It's not a race to the finish.

Hah, except to the end of December. And since I've got Witcher 2, Borderlands, that AAR for GalCiv and the LP for Etrian Odyssey...
And this is an old game. People think old games and they think Pong. But older RPGs had so much more content than new ones do. I'm honestly quite intimidated. Which is why I plan on playing this game.
Either way, thanks for letting me jump on the bandwagon.

I just made it to Quartz yesterday and I have to say this game is really starting to frustrate me. . . . The game generally gives you very few hints on what you're supposed to say when talking to people. If you don't know what to ask, you're screwed. Yeah. I'm doing Quartz all backwards, apparently. But I think the first thing you do, after buying bullet-proof "shirts" at the shop, is go to the bar at the bottom of the map. You need to talk to Ellen the bartender. Search the tables for clues on what to say to her. You may have to talk to the riddle guy first, I didn't try to skip him. If you want to talk to Ellen or the bartender (he has good info for bad prices), you have to have one of your characters disband and sit on a barstool. Ellen is invisible on the screen, but she'll come over and talk to you the moment you sit at a stool that isn't in front of the barkeep. Do what she says and it will end up saving you some grief at the courthouse. The first thing I did (by accident) was go to the officer's club and waste Ugly John. It's not that tricky. And you can get a few good weapons from it. THIS JUST INBobinator provided a useful guide on character creation for those who like to roll their own, as it were. pastebin.com/R2A4AXay

I knew you needed to talk to the bartender, but I had no idea how. I never thought to disband and have one of my guys sit at the bar.

You can count me in to the podcast thing. I've been rolling the game today and things have been going very smoothly. Only one crash so far at the beginning.
Here's what I've been doing so far. Spoilers ahoy on town-specific details.
First I rolled a party with 4 different personalities: One talker with gun skills, one muscle guy to beat things to a bloody pulp, one gun-toting chick who can also do some thievery stuff and one balanced individual. The big guy wasnt originally going to be a melee fighter, but then I noticed he seemed to be better in it compared to shooting.
Been to the Camp Highpool: Found the cave, killed the rabid dog and rescued Jackie from the caves. Decided to keep her. Killed the dog owner as well.
Farming community: Helped the villagers to kill Harry, the rabbit master. Bagged lot of valuable fruits as well. Nothing else really.
Nomad Camp: North-east from the church. Got a mission to take a credit card to a guy in Quartz. Met some guy who wanted booze.
Quartz: Killing, killing, killing. Found some hideouts, took out Ugly Joe, defused the bomb and rescued the chick. Found crusher and gave him the credit card. Some more killing, collected lots of clips, sold them and bought armor and better weapons. Rescued the mayor and some other guy from a jail-cell.
So far so good.
EDIT: Starting to hit a brick wall here. I've been to other places, but things are getting too hot.
Needles: Little tougher enemies, but still can handle them, until I go to the church. They have robots there, and they're more than happy to shred me into pieces. I did manage to get into the depts of it and found all kinds of weird stuff.
Vegas: Robots roam around the street. I need a lot more stronger stuff If I intent to survive.
Still looking around the Needles. I'll try exploring the temple again, and hopefully that will lead to some plot hook or better weapons.

Yeah, I just got to Needles as well. Skipped the hippie farmer commune.
I guess the point in Needles is to solve the "bloodstaff murders." Which probably means wiping out that creepy cult.
I wonder if that howitzer can be used for that purpose?

My party solved the bloodstaff murders by busting down the front door of the cultist's hideout and going on a chainsaw rampage. Heroic!
Also, there's a party member you can recruit in Needles that happens to own armor that both protects from radiation and offers 5 AC. Hire him, take his armor and weapons, then kick him out of the party because he isn't very good. Free loot! Likewise, purchasing Kevlar Vests (4 AC, $1000 each) from the arms dealer in Needles will give your party members a great boost in survivability.

I played this game on my Apple II a year or so ago. Great game. One thing I haven't seen mentioned yet here is that ammunition is finite. Once you buy all the ammo in a shop, it is gone forever. So yes, buff up those melee skills, you'll need them. Edit: BTW, the CRPG Addict played through this game recently. If you don't mind some minor spoilers, check out his write up.

Even better when I got my hands on an Assault Rifle. Auto-attack is good way to empty a room. So I killed the head-honcho and found a bloodstaff. Am I supposed to do something with it. There is a some sort of table in downtown that supposedly checks the staff and it doesnt crush it like the other ones. Is it some important item then? Also, in the south-parts of Needles there's some sort of bunker (game calls it a trash-pit or something like that). If you go to the bottom floor (use anykind of explosives to get rid of the doors), you'll find two radiation suits (the same kind you can get from the party member feynman mentioned). Better than Kevlar Vests. As far as I can see, the Howitzer dont seem to serve any purpose, other than you can cause mindless destruction with it. You can get lot of shells when raiding the temple and then blow-up that food-stall. Another question: Do I have to do something to the people I've recruited/rescued? I still have 3 people I rescued from the gang in Quartz (Felicia who was strapped on bomb, the Mayor who was in the courthouse jail and Ace who was jailed in the gentleman club) and while they have proven themselfs useful, I always wonder If I was supposed to drop them off somewhere.

Regarding what to do with the Bloodstaff, there are several of them located around the city, and only one is real. By (U)sing a Bloodstaff on the table, it will destroy copies, and confirm which is the real staff.
Now, with both the Bloodstaff and the Ruby Ring (found on a corpse somewhere in Needles) in your possession, go to the building in the southeast corner of town. Stand directly in front of the person inside and (U)se the Ruby Ring on the tile you're standing on. Then (U)se the real Bloodstaff in the same way. You'll get a reward!
As for the people you rescued in Quartz, they have no further use other than being kind of crappy party members. Ace is worth keeping around, but the Mayor and Felicia are basically useless.

7 fighting party members are better than 4. Give him a rifle and he'll do fine. Give him an assault rifle and he can do even better. Only problem are the times when he decides to use auto for the heck of it. Like sometimes we are just about to finish this attack robot and he just wasted an entire clip on it.
