An interesting little tidbit, a year after the release of Rusty, C-Lab took the engine and slightly reworked it to create Totsugeki Mix !. The main difference is three selectable characters, the ability to choose levels, and the fact that most levels are open, with no key hunts necessary, but you do need to collect three items, one each of three specific levels (though you only have acess to one with an item when you start, the other unlocks after you collect and so on).
Also, unlike Rusty, this is a cute platformer, with cake world stages, levels filled with jesters and blobs, and some bosses that are, well.....japanese.
But most interesting, oddly enough, is not what's different from Rusty, but what is the same.
The owl pointer on the title screen is the same, only a different colour. One of the heroiness uses a whip, you still get items from statues coming from the ground, the special attacks are the same, with even the icon sprite for them ripped straight from Rusty, and even your characters' death scream is the same.
It would be interesting to make some comparison between the two, no ?

I was unaware of Totsugeki Mix, though I guess it's on the company's software page. Thank you for the information! That sounds like it warrants it's own feature actually. Can you provide any screens? I'd be happy to include your above forum post in the article at the end, and share the byline with you. By John Szczepaniak and Apachacha Or a real name, if you prefer. EDIT: Haha, they even re-used the springpad sprite. www.mobygames.com/game/pc98/totsugeki-mix/screenshots/gameShotId,422794/ The game looks really neat actually!

I actually liked Totsugeki Mix a lot more than Rusty, although I think I didn't know how to go on at one point.

I took two screencaps of the weirdest bosses. Also I have this screencap that tells you where the david stars are that you need to unlock more levels, and could even tell you where you need to go in greater detail. Oh and if you want to play this, final tip: do NOT pick the red head. Her attack is slow and does half the dammage then the others'. Plus she has no discernable plus to her. I usualy pick the green haired one, because she has a double jump. I could write something about it, if you'd like. That and some ohter PC 98 software I ran across (Red Cobra: an 8 disk Space Harrier type shooter, but the sheer amount of text and the what-the-fuckery takes up twice the amount of time then actual gameplay. On average you'll spend ten minutes clicking through hordes of text before you can even get to the next level. But level 4 is worth it just to see......well, everything.) @ Derboo: I liked it more because for most of the game, you don't have to constantly collect keys, which got a bit annoying in the auto scrolling stage sof Rusty.

Didn't know about Totsugeki Mix. I liked Rusty, so I may have to try it some time to see how similar they are.

Note: this one was released on disk. I can point you towards a working HDi version which I played all the way through if you want.

I feel the need to butt in and mention that C-lab. did a lot of contract work. On the platformer front, there's Action Pachio for the Super Famicom:

Tried playing it, the first boss is a bit annoying, because you move extra slow, then gain momentum and walk into harms way without wanting to, and can only attack from a standing position, basicly.

God, that looks horrible. Like a desperate attempt at cashing-in on Dizzy and Sonic on a platform that hosted neither of them.

You have any source for them making this ? It was listed on the C-lab. website (image is missing). If you look carefully in the background of the first stage, there's a sign flashing "C-lab." God, that looks horrible. Like a desperate attempt at cashing-in on Dizzy and Sonic on a platform that hosted neither of them. The game stars Pachio-kun, Coconuts Japan's mascot character thing.

Sort of wonder if they did anything else not released under their name ?

If anyone wants either "Rusty" or "Totsugeki Mix" I have them for PC (MS-DOS), let me know and I will upload it.
