Wow, thanks for the link Sketcz, I never knew how crazy show was behind the scenes at GameFan. The stories about Halverson writing a review on acid and the guys buying at hooker at CES and playing Yoshis Island were amazing! Shidoshi and Nick Rox need to talk about this stuff on Warning a Huge Podcast. Anyway, I have an insane treasure trove of gaming magazines in storage at my parents' house in the States. I really wish I could contribute to this thread since I have some rare stuff like GameGo issues, tons of GameFan issues, and PLAY magazine back issues. Maybe I can grab some stuff to scan next time I visit.

Cool - the more the merrier!
I have quite a healthy PLAY back catalogue (late 2006 until they closed I think), so if anyone has requests, ask now. Some of their interviews were REALLY good.

Could you go post the scan for the Muramasa issue? I think there was supposed to be an interview with George Kamitani, but the issue was impossible to find in my city for some reason. I think the tenacle groping cover scared the conservative places I usually shopped back then.

That's a pretty decent review of Zombies Ate My Neighbors as far as I'm concerned. I had high hopes for the game and it seemed pretty fun at first, but the more I played, the more unpleasant it became to the point that I gave up on it in the upper 30s (the stage number, that is). And I almost NEVER give up on games. I still want to force myself to get back into it to beat it, just so all that effort I put in wouldn't feel like a complete waste, but "force" is definitely the key word here. The repetitive nature of the game would be bad enough on its own, but as it gets more challenging, it all the more brings out the annoying quirks and bad design decisions of the game. The fact that the game PUNISHES you for using passwords, the random nature of acquiring items which can totally screw you, the insanely cheap neighbor deaths that come down to basically 100% luck on if it goes in your favor or not, the werewolf tourists that are literally impossible to save short of abusing a glitch, so on and so on. Ugh.

All valid points! I started to like it a lot more when I realised I should avoid the passwords. When I first played it, as a kid, I used passwords to skip through most of it, and so quite enjoyed it without thinking (I'd skip to a level, play a bit and leave it). Only in recent years have I started replaying it with any intention of "clocking" it. As for Muramasa, here's my set with 19 pages. That was a great issue. 18 pages on one game!

I miss such passionate game coverage. Also, Momohime is hot.

This interests me. Do I just scan old magazines and post them? I have a lot of old magazines lying around. If it does work like that, I can weed through them and put up the good stuff. I eventually quit game magazines because I decided that I could find the same information online easier, but I kept them around because I thought they were cool.

This interests me. Do I just scan old magazines and post them? Sure! Just go for it. This isn't for archive or record keeping purposes. I once spoke with a guy who did that, and offered him the archives of scans I already had, but he was adament it had to be done in a specific way, at a specific DPI and resolution and whatnot. I'm not even scanning, I'm photographing! This thread is just for fun, so we can share cool scans, make requests, and get some scans for site articles. Post whatever you feel like. There are no rules in here.

Perhaps they were all just blind drunk on gin at the time? I'll have to try to find their Doom review, where they criticised it because you couldn't stop for a cup of tea and a chat with the monsters (true story). Not really. You can read Edge reviews online (just Google "edge review doom" or something), and while it is a stupid review not doing it nearly enough justice, the chat with monsters thing was obviously tongue in cheek. This rumour was spread by Stuart Campbell wasn't it?

That sucks about Gamefan. It's probably still my favorite game magazine ever and I lost all of my issues a while ago. I'd LOVE to be able to read them again.

That's fantastic, thank you! I like the Camelot interview, that's really cool. I know a guy who worked on N64 Magazine, who can email me scans of the review, so I should hjave a nice mix of Silicon Valley coverage. Thanks for taking the time Roushi. There's a video on youtube which shows an early beta of the game, which looks rather different to the final game! www.youtube.com/watch?v=El4eYELW9d4

Just scanned in a six page preview on Fear Effect: Inferno from Game Informers Feb '03 issue. Seemed pretty informative and I couldn't turn any other copies of it up during a quick google. edit - it also reveals that Criticom started life as a Spawn fighting game.
