This game is outstanding. The best part of it IMHO is Addie herself. Most of the game takes place inside a dream she has after she falls asleep playing with her new Loglock, and a good chunk of the game feels like a psychological study -- characters and locations within the game world all either relate back to Addie's life or represent parts of Addie's psyche, and we learn so much about her by exploring the odd coastal resort she dreams about. The characters are all suitably surreal, too, for the dream setting, and include such notable figures as "TubBody," the man who lives inside a barrel in the museum. Seriously excited for this. It's a wonderful, wonderful title well suited to anyone who enjoys the likes of Professor Layton, or just enjoys a really good, charming puzzle RPG. Graphics are freaking amazing for PS1, too, and the music (what little there is, sadly) is also really good: -Tom

I'm sure someone cares about this and it looks really neat, but I hate playing console games on a PC. I stopped using emulators years ago. I just wanted to chime in that the graphics have a PSP style to them. So much I had to re-check the title of the thread... On another note how come no one in America makes "niche" games?

There's lots of indie games from the US. Unless you mean just plain quirky, in which case, no clue. I'm sure there's some examples though.

Plenty of quirky western titles too, really. The Flying Hamster, Where Is My Heart... even Super Meat Boy. It's just a different SORT of quirkiness.
To be fair, too, Addie's Present is more charming than it is quirky. Yeah, it's got its quirky moments, but it feels more like an arthouse production than it does a "weird Japanese thing." It's a very heartwarming, soul-lifting sort of game.
And yeah, like I said, the graphics in this game are pretty damned fine for PS1, no? That's most likely due to it being a game released late in the PS1's lifespan... but either way, it's probably got some of the best 3D modeling I've ever seen on the system.

Yep, that was the first thing I noticed. I also love the 2d walking overlay.

Ditto. It's very well-animated and expressive.

Sorry, I meant like how Japanese get horse racing games or that beat em up with the angel that dresses up like Ash from Streets of Rage... I guess being on this site I realize we've had of lot weird games, but they tend to lean more toward adventure/point and click with strange aesthetics. We rarely get weird gameplay.
I wanted to clarify rereading this that I meant we don't make them here in America. We get the oddball released here, and I'm sure this all has to do something with what sells here or even the difference in investments or something, but it always bugged me a bit
EDIT: Go Go Ackman 3 is the one I was thinking of!

From what I remember, SSSPSX was the only emulator that could run this worth a damn...

From what I remember, SSSPSX was the only emulator that could run this worth a damn... Esper had to send me a special emulator for it. PS2X or something. She's a picky one for sure.

I'd certainly play it when there's a playable release - as it stands right now, though, too many fan-translation projects have gone into "development stealth mode" and then never updated for upwards of a few years. (Looking at you, LadyStalker.)

Hmm, it looks interesting, especially if the playability is extra-smooth. Who are the people translating it? How is their progress?

Well, Shikigami took us 2 years, but it got there. So will this. There's one translator who I'm not sure if I'm at liberty to share, Esper's hacking, I'll probably be editing.

Not that it's a lot of help, but do feel free to use my translations from those 5 minutes on YouTube if you'd like. I realize that's kind of like giving a nickel to a man who's working his ass off to raise money, but hey... uh... don't look a gift nickel in the mouth? -Tom
