I was reading Super Play at the time (among other magazines) which also stated that there was something of an in-house rivalry with the upcoming Yoshi's Island. DKC was an alright platformer with technically impressive graphics (aesthetically, not so much, but this is subjective isn't it) and it kind of stole the limelight from the superior Miyamoto game. DKC also aged a lot less gracefully than Yoshi's Island did. Another victim of DKC's hype was Earthworm Jim, which came out at roughly the same time, with Dave Perry stating in an interview that they decided to delay the game in order to polish it some more to be more competitive. Though it isn't is immediately obvious since EJ came out on different platforms.

As much as I love the DKC games, I noticed some people blame the first one as the main reason (or at least part of the reason) Super Metroid didn't do all that well in terms of sales.

Well, if it's the reason that Yoshi's Island looks the way it does, then it gets a free pass. Otherwise I'm not really the biggest fan of DKC and I never played the other two.

I don't see how that's possible since Super Metroid came out in April and DKC in November. By the time DKC was released Super Metroid was probably not even in stores anymore. Besides, Metroid has never been a super seller. Well, if it's the reason that Yoshi's Island looks the way it does, then it gets a free pass. Otherwise I'm not really the biggest fan of DKC and I never played the other two. DKC is indeed not all that. But DKC2 is great and DKC3 (kiddy aside), is very good too. I recommend you play DKC2 at least. I was never a fan of the first game, but I fell in love with the sequel.

If I remember right it's on the VC.

Unfortunately, for some reason, all 3 DKC games were removed from the VC. Hopefully you'll like DKC2. That's the one everyone seems to like too.

Sorry for the necro-bump (seen this thread referenced in the journalism thread) - but does anyone else find it more than a little peculiar that you only ever played as Donkey Kong once in the Donkey Kong Country trilogy? Did someone really believe Kiddy Kong was a better replacement for Donkey Kong? ¬_¬

I didn't mind Kiddy Kong to be honest. His water skip technique was pretty cool.
Plus, he could actually take out some of the stronger enemies quiet easily.

Which could have easily been done by DK himself. Kiddy was a stupid and dumb character.

Well, I guess it's good that we didn't get a DKC4 then, since going by the trend of the games, Donkey, Diddy, and Dixie would all be kidnapped and Kiddy would be the star. :P Although I'd still take that over DK64, which barely counts as a legitimate platformer, and all of its new Kongs are just as pathetic as Kiddy, if not more so.

So how many Kong's are there total now? Counting the classic series, Country, 64, and anything else that's come after then?

13 that I know of, though I haven't played any of the "bongo" games aside from Donkey Konga; so I may be missing a few new guys. Th--that's harsh. :'( It wasn't as good as any of the DK games before it, but it wasn't a abomination. Then again, maybe I'm just talking crazy seeing as how most people seem to like DKCR.

I wouldn't mind a Donkey Kong's replacement but unfortunately Kiddy Kong wasn't a good choice. Not only he's a downgraded version of DK (he lack the DK's floor smashing move that I loved so much at DKC1 and he doesn't have a new move as a replacement), he's also annoying as hell. If they wanted to make a strong baby gorilla they could at least make him much stronger than DK, just like Chunky Kong in DK64.
