You can get Virtua Fighter 2 as a download for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 for 5 bucks, which is exactly like the original arcade game. I'd say the difficulty and stiffness of it may carry a risk of souring your son on the game, though. Virtua Fighter 5 Last Round (also on 360 and PS3) really is the best entry point for beginners, and maybe it's best to check out the series' history afterwards.

Hello! I have recently been thinking about Virtua Fighter 2, a game I loved so many years back. I never kept up with any of the versions after, so it is interesting to read the opinions. I think VF2 was a perfect game, not a button smasher like Tekken, but a true thinking and skill challenge. I was thinking of buying an old Sega Dreamcast and the game to play with my son, but then wanted to do research on best versions/systems which is how I found this thread. Did you miss-spell multiple times or is there really a Dreamcast port of VF2? I only know of part 3 on the DC and of the Saturn port of part 2.

The Sega Dreamcast version was the only one I ever played back in the day. It was on Sega Genesis, too.

I was hoping not to spend as much on a system, but knowing I can play the classic VF2 on is tempting. My son is only six, and has not had much experience with console games, so this was going to be the first. I like the difficulty of VF2, and he is studying kung-fu, so i thought it would help in patience among other things beyond a fun game. My thought was have VF2 be his entry point, then expand from there. Plus we can play together, which of course we can with the newer versions. And, I think you mean Final Showdown, not Last Round, right? So now the question, which system is VF5 better to play on, Xbox 360 or PS3? Thanks again!

Ah, yeah, I got the subtitle mixed up with Dead or Alive 5. Both versions are almost identical, so it more or less comes down to your preference of controller. Xbox 360 has ever so slightly better lighting. Eurogamer has an in-depth technical analysis with comparisons if you want to know every tiny difference: www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-vf5-final-showdown-face-off

PS3s seem to be less expensive, I'll probably go that route. Thanks! I'll check back here often, especially if the rumored VF6 ever comes out!

Stupidly underrated by American gamers, but highly praised by Japanese ones. I'm like Japan, I enjoy the polygonal graphics of the very first one.
Smithsonian Institute's praise for VF
VS.
Guinness World Records: Gamer Edition's praise for Tekken
