Rise of the Triad 2013 does that pretty well, a lot more so than a lot of retto-esque FPSes coming out lately. But does anybody ever talk about ROTT 2013? Nooooooooo! I've heard a lot of people talk about it. I stayed away from it initially though because I heard it had a lot of glitches at launch. I should get around to playing it though, since those have surely been ironed out since then. Yeah, I honestly never got what was really "retro" about Painkiller, Hard Reset or Shadow Warrior. I've played early FPS games myself, and they're really nothing like them. I love 'em, but I'm not really seeing the throwback. A part of me can't help but think of them more like "Arcade FPS" on account of being structured more like a classic brawler. I haven't played the other two, but the 2013 Shadow Warrior game does feel suitably old-school to me, at least as far as combat is concerned. You're fighting hordes of monsters that attack you all at once with a mix of melee and projectile attacks, while using a wide variety of weapons that you all have access to at once. Plus health packs and no cover system and moving around really quickly. That at least feels like Doom or Duke Nukem 3D or whatnot to me. I also like the secrets that are hidden in the game - those are fun to go out of my way for. The overall game's design is very linear though, and the beat-em-up comparison is apt, but I do think it has something in common with classic FPSes. Still though, there should be more FPSes today with traps and labyrinths and whatnot.

I wanted to like ROTT2013 more but I couldn't. Not only its fidelity to the original ended up being limiting at times (especially with the very limited loadout and variety of the weapons), but its great speed often turned against itself: the framerate was inconsistent and, the worst, it handled everything but tight, which becomes almost unforgivable in a game with lots of platforming. The love from the developers is evident but it's not enough.
As for the other games that were mentioned, rather than discussing if they are "old-school enough" or not, we should be just glad that there's someone still making FPSes that do not adhere to the Halo/CoD formula.

Bobinator: I haven't gotten around to ROTT 2013 yet. I'll probably play it a bit tomorrow though.

Doom 3 was one of the biggest gaming disappointments of my lifetime, so it's not exactly encouraging to see id sticking to the "Doom II remake" idea here. As with its predecessor, I insist that you cannot give a game's name the next numbered iteration in a series when it's a remake of a previous entry. Having said that, I'm going to remain cautiously optimistic about this thing. John Carmack was in charge of Doom 3 and Rage, and neither one set the world on fire. Here's hoping that his absence means an actual game can be made and not just a glorified tech demo.

I haven't played Doom 3 yet, but I actually enjoyed parts of Rage. I think if id had either focused solely on the action/shooting aspects of the game, or had at least mixed together those aspects with the towns/"story" in a more natural, integrated way, then it could have been really, really amazing. As it is, I think it feels like a tech demo, with some amazing parts, but where the whole is less than the sum of its parts.

Doom 3 was good + fun, it just wasn't anything like id's 90s output

yeah, Doom 3 was not a bad game by any means, although in fairness it's been like 9 years since I played it so it's not exactly fresh in my memory

So here I was, all excited for this grand reveal of the new Doom and it turns out that only QuakeCon atendees will be able to see it. Just what makes id/Bethesda think thay can pull this kind of bullshit on people? Not every Doom fan has the power to go to Texas.

There's almost no way that Doom 4 will be anything other than yet another triple-A snoozefest. It's too big of a name and they'll be under too much business pressure to cater to the CoD audience. The only AAA modern shooters I can stand anymore are from Japanese devs. I'm more interested in where Id goes with Quake V; they've dropped hints of it finally ditching the Strogg and returning to the Lovecraftian themes of the first game. They just better not give it to Raven Software again.

I'd say Bulletstorm and Call of Juarez Gunslinger heavily emphasize sheer anarchy over funneling the player from endless blockbuster setpieces.

Doom 4 has a weapon wheel and the ability to jump. And double jump, at that! That already gives me a lot of hope, although I'm really worried that there's going to be Brutal Doom levels of gore in this, from the impressions people were giving. I really don't like Brutal Doom.
I'm expecting something at least on the level of New Order, which I heard was pretty good, anyway.

If there's any game that would have been a prime candidate to be turned into a CoD style game it was Wolfenstein. And since id resisted the urge with that franchise, I can't imagine that they'd go that way with Doom. At least I hope.
