The biggest difference is that there's no mid-level cutscenes/dialogue/turret sequences in Doom ushering you along. You can trudge all the way back to the entrance after reaching the exit if you feel like it. And the game doesn't care if you try to go somewhere you're not supposed to be yet.

Doom enemies also aren't constantly spawning/respawning in order to inhibit your progress, too.

There are degrees of linearity, it isn't a black and white thing. Of course Doom levels have a certain amount of A->B->C linearity, every stage-based game has that to at least some degree. However, there is a vast difference between a game like Doom, where you are free to explore at will and even bypass entire parts of a level, and something like a modern cinematic shooter, in which there is a single completely linear corridor to run down and half the time you aren't even allowed to open a goddamn door without NPC assistance.

I think I kind of prefer linearity personally. I don't like getting lost.

Doom enemies also aren't constantly spawning/respawning in order to inhibit your progress, too. They are on Nightmare, though!

There's almost no way that Doom 4 will be anything other than yet another triple-A snoozefest. It's too big of a name and they'll be under too much business pressure to cater to the CoD audience. The only AAA modern shooters I can stand anymore are from Japanese devs. I'm more interested in where Id goes with Quake V; they've dropped hints of it finally ditching the Strogg and returning to the Lovecraftian themes of the first game. They just better not give it to Raven Software again. I certainly hope not. I totally acknowledge the importance of Quake as a FPS milestone, but I hated the inconsistent theme. The enemies had little rhyme or reason to them and it completely felt like they were trying to stick to Doom as much as possible without making it a Doom sequel. Doom did enemies right; Quake didn't. Strogg Quake may be more generic theme-wise, but I'd rather have generic done well than unique done bad. At least the Trent Reznor soundtrack was awesome.

Sorry to go off topic...but does anyone know if you can play the Doom RPG ON PC or Android? I really enjoyed it :-( It appears to predate ios/android, so you may be out of luck playing the original. Unless there's an emulation scene for old cellphones. Which wouldn't really surprise me actually. I did find a Doom II mod somebody made that's supposed to be a Doom RPG remake. No idea if it's any good.

it's the end of the world civilisation is doomed! Sorry, I didn't mean to sound like an entitled brat a few posts back. It's just that I don't understand the reasoning behind id/Bethesda's move. It's not like they're gonna lose something by showing the footage to everyone.

It's fine, I just couldn't pass up the chance to use doom as a pun!

I think I kind of prefer linearity personally. I don't like getting lost. The best games have a balance. Exploration is always nice, but some degree of signposting is always appreciated.
