Kinda late to the party I guess, but my problem with memes is that they were in-jokes that referenced shit and usually were not all there was to the message. I mean, if you take 4chan, the pic posted would contain the meme / macro and the text itself could still be read. To me, they were wonderful when they were delivered like jokes in the Naked Gun - the characters would say hilarious shit, but nobody would laugh or wait to a reaction, they'd just continue as if nothing happened. If the joke was great, you'd get a laugh, if it wasn't, the line just went on.
However, as memes went on to become more and more popular, they needed to be self-contained in order to be spreadable. IMO, their often bizarre nature does not lend itself very well to the SCREAM MEME AT TOP OF LUNGS AND THAT'S IT! nature of that mode. Memes have often lost all connection to the source material and just imply that they fit in any context because the sheer mention of it will be funny. It's not. But needing to know the source material limits the potential audience for a meme, so that means the "picky" ones won't get popular. Or just bastardized. Maybe I'm also just getting too old for this shit; I dug the ALL YOUR BASE meme and flash video 10+ years ago. (Fucking hell, I _AM_ getting old)
That being said, I still love the Foul Bachelor Frog.

(Fucking hell, I _AM_ getting old) But some of the modern memes are based on old games like the "Are You a Bad Enough Dude" meme from Bad Dudes Vs Dragon Ninja. Now I will be the one to sound like an old man but it saddens me when many people use this meme, yet they never bothered playing the game itself which is still awesome.

Considering Reagan's been dead for a couple of years now and Cold War lingo is probably only known for its parodies nowadays, I'd say it's not only the Bad Dudes context that is getting ignored in this case.
But hey, just so we're clear, I'm not THAT old; I didn't play Bad Dudes as a kid either.

Memes have a shelf life shorter than milk sitting out in 90 degree weather, and if you're talking about loving some ancient meme, people are gonna think you're about as hip as a soccer mom from the suburbs. They can be briefly funny, though. The "just fuck me up" quote and photo that's going around right now makes me chuckle.
The awkward thing about memes as you get older (I sound terribly old saying that) is when people make a meme out of something from the past that you already have experience with as just a regular thing. Like stuff from games, movies, music, etc. Like I was already familiar with the song "Never Gonna Give You Up" before it became a meme, so to me it was just a normal, albeit cheesy, song. Sometimes I inadvertently reveal my age by being all surprised when someone younger than me is familiar with something because I wasn't even aware it became a thing online. And it also kind of sucks because you then can't reference it like you would in the past without people thinking you're using it as meme.

My new D&D group has this awful habit of using memes as punchlines. It's depressing....

I always liked the "wazzuuuuuuuup!" line before even memes (including the ancient ones) was a thing since I liked the first Scary Movie and the wazzup moment was the funniest and the most popular. That's why I hate it when people see "wazzup" as an ancient meme instead of seeing it as a famous line from an old movie and commercial. At least it's not a forced joke as most memes. Considering Reagan's been dead for a couple of years now and Cold War lingo is probably only known for its parodies nowadays, I'd say it's not only the Bad Dudes context that is getting ignored in this case. I'm not familiar with Cold War lingo but I always found the burger line from the ending so random and funny and I prefer over the "Are You a Bad Enough Dude" line. You rescued the president of USA. And what is your reward? Not a big money reward, not expensive, fast cars, not a glorious feast at a fancy restaurant...but a freaking burger. What a stingy asshole!

This is my new favorite meme.Anyways... do any of you ever notice those people IRL who happen to be really awkward, and can tell how at certain moments, they attempt to snap out of their awkwardness by reciting some meme they read about on the internet once? Then no one around them has any idea what they're talking about and doesn't react, which causes said person to sort of clam up and become even more awkward and shy? I'm very observant of such a thing when it happens around me, perhaps because I was once kinda sorta like that. Part of me feels bad for them, and has no idea how to react about it. At the same time though, when a bunch of people who know all these memes are hanging out and start reciting them, often in an unfunny way, then I start to feel like the awkward one out. Maybe memes are just inherently awkward outside of the internet. It makes me wonder.

I know a person like that from a greek Nintendo forum when we have offline meetings. Not only he uses memes IRL but also internet slangs that almost everyone else have no idea what the hell is he talking about. With saying that, I have the bad habit of saying "lol" IRL, even when I'm talking with people which aren't familiar with internet slangs.

Stuff like that makes me glad that I've turned into an old hermit who only talks to the same 3 people outside of work. I always hated being out with peopple who do stuff like that.

Because memes tend to be written in a manner that's akward to actually say or requires everyone present to be aware of the joke. And they are pretty lazy jokes usually. I don't usually use memes when I talk, but when I do, the punchline is usually bizarre and kind of stupid.

My wife keeps getting mad at me because I keep using the term NTR when watching Korean dramas (specifically anything to do with the "second lead syndrome".).

Weird because that's the only meme that's appropriate to use at all appropriate times. Personally, I'm trying to figure out the context where "C-C-C-COUNTER BREAKER!" from the new KI would actually be appropriate. I'm thinking maybe it'd be when somebody starts an argument, and somebody says something back, and then the first guy makes a rebuttal to what the second guy said. As seen in this video. One day it'll happen. And I'll be there.
