Didn't the GC discs have larger holes? I think they spun the other way too, or I might be confusing that one with another console.

Yeah, I don't think they're the same sizes. But if they are don't do it. It usually fucks the laser, because something makes the speeds go differently. For example putting a data cd in a standard car player, makes it spin super fast and it starts whirring.

GC discs read backwards, I've been told. That's why the only method to image them, if I recall, is with the broadband adapter and PSO.

Regarding GC discs speed, after playing PS2 for many years I was amazed with the speed of GC games: the loading times in many games were so small that I forgot their existence. On the other hand, PS1 and PS2 loading times was a big issue, expecially at PS1. Like seriously, not only did the N64 and GC controllers look like something Playskool makes for toddlers to fuck around with, they were hell to use on anything not developed by Nintendo specifically for N64/Gamecube. Not only N64 and GC controller were fine to use them but also, just like many other Nintendo products, had great construction quality. On the other hand, the official Playstation controllers have a very bad reputation about how fast and easily they break (expecially the analog sticks and the trigger buttons). And PS2 hardware quality is one of the worst I have ever seen in a console (even the classic, fat model, the slim model is even worse). No. Gamecube could definitely put out much better looking games than PS2, but how often did that happen? All the time maybe? Just make a comparison between PS2 and GC version of any multiplatform game. GC version are always better. Also try this with some Nintendo games like Luig's Mansion and Star Fox Adventure: play them on a good 40" HD TV with an HDMI cable and you will be amased so much with the quality of the graphics. PS2 on the other hand? Just try it on any LCD TV from 32" and after and your eyes will be hurt in many games (expecially with 2D games). Even when it did happen, how many games like that were there compared to the sheer number of JRPGs on PS2? Sorry but I don't recall any PS2 jrpg having graphics better looking than GC. Did you confused it with PS3? Heck, I don't even recall many PS2 jrpgs having remarkable graphics with only 2-3 exceptions like Dragon Quest 8 and Grandia 3.

GCN Controllers look silly, but they are some of the most comforable and durable I've ever witnessed. Same goes for N64. It looks like a weird design at first, but it's a very comfortable thing, and the control sticks (if you don't have a worn out one, that is) still hold up very well, unlike the PSX ones. Hell, unlike the later PS2 and DC ones.

On top of that, the configuration of the buttons can be great for some games; having them clumped together and having some bigger than others is perfect for F-Zero and Smash Bros.

Yeah, I've always really liked the Gamecube controller.
Nintendo didn't piss me off until the Wii, which was when they officially put gimmicks ahead of hardware, it was embarrassing how under-powered that thing was and how not great the motion controls turned out to be.
Why Nintendo just didn't accept their fate as a comfortable niche and instead tried to be number 1# in video games again is beyond me, it may have worked for a while but it was a short sighted plan and now they're back to being even more niche than they were with the Gamecube!

I don't disagree about the construction (aside from the shitty stick on the n64 leaving sawdust everywhere). And as I said, it's fine for games that were designed for them like the ones you mentioned. Anything else was a nightmare; ever try playing Spider-Man on Gamecube? It's a nightmare. Same with Jedi Knight II, and anything else third-party. Then again their third party support mostly sucked.

I can't think of ever encountering a 3rd party GCN game where the controller wasn't suitable.

Sorry, I wasn't wearing my Nintendo fanboy babby glasses from 2001-2006. Guess that's on me. Nice flame war bait. Come back when you have a valid argument. Why Nintendo just didn't accept their fate as a comfortable niche and instead tried to be number 1# in video games again is beyond me... Uuuuum...didn't Nintendo tried to be No1 since NES era? And they succeed back then althought they used shady tactics like not allowing third party companies to make games for rival companies. Then they had the not so great idea to make a cartidge console on a cd console era, something that obviously pissed of the companies and made them move to Playstation. Sure, cartidge had its own awesome advantages (like zero loading times) but at what cost? Losing all the support they had from the companies which wanted to take advance of the many capabilities that cds have over cartidges. And of course make money at much smaller cost (making cartidge games on N64 costed much more than making CD games for rival companies). Still I find it kinda weird that big third party companies in Japan were still making SNES games even in Playstation boom era. Capcom making Mega Man and Bass in 1998, Hudson making Super Bomberman 5 in 1997, Square making Treasure Hunter G in 1996 (a year before releasing Final Fantasy 7 for Playstation)...Maybe they just wanted to offer some, last games for costumers who didn't bought yet a Playstation.

Ironically, they aimed for #1 but the library is (deliciously) niche and full of b-games and under the radar gems compared to the competition. Wii U is the worse of Gamecube and Wii in support, but its 1st party is amazing IMO.

I still prefer Wii U over Gamecube. Althought they made objectively great games like Lugi's Mansion, Metroid Prime, F-Zero GX and Zelda Wind Waker, Gamecube for me is the least favourite Nintendo console. I didn't liked Super Mario Sunshine, no new Kirby platform game, no new Donkey Kong platform game (Donkey Konga is nice but still it was a spin-off), Star Fox Assault was mediocre, Star Fox Adventure was great but still it would be much better as Dinosaur Planet (which had more interesting gameplay ideas before removing them for the sake of reskin it as a Star Fox game), Super Smash Melee while it was good for its time I wasn't a Super Smash Bros fan until Brawl came out and later Super Smash Bros for 3DS and Wii U...
