The real problem with the N64 controller is hardly the unconventional shape but rather that how flimsy the analog stick is. I'm convinced you can create workable controls for either Sony and Nintendo controllers. It's pretty tough to find older controllers that still have decent sticks. I guess you could forgive them, seeing how the N64 was the first to make an analog controller a standard - which Sony then promptly copied.

I still love GCN controllers, but the only 3rd party games I played were still like remakes made exclusively for Gamecube. Like Resident Evil, Twin Snakes. And Namco's Gamecube exclusives like Baten Kaitos or Symphonia. So I never really played anything that didn't work well on the console. Except Mega Man collections. Both of them. I hate that tiny little d-pad for games that plain just needed it. I suffered through with the stick and even beat Mega Man 1 with it, but hot damn.

And speaking of mini-DVDs, GameCube games weren't the only things that used them... I remember I had one with a Bionicle thingie from a cereal box and we still have an USB driver disc in the exact same size and shape. I wonder what happens if I put it on my GC? Just being smaller doesn't make a disc a "mini-DVD". You're just refering to smaller-sized CDs (not even DVDs). The Cube's mini-DVDs are its own unique kind of disc.

Nice flame war bait. Come back when you have a valid argument. Well, you see... Sorry but I don't recall any PS2 jrpg having graphics better looking than GC. Did you confused it with PS3? Heck, I don't even recall many PS2 jrpgs having remarkable graphics with only 2-3 exceptions like Dragon Quest 8 and Grandia 3. ...when you start out with statements like that, you're just acting churlish. That kind of behavior doesn't deserve a reasoned, even-handed response. It deserves an equally snippy reply.

While multiplatform games generally looked better on the GC, JRPGs seems a weird comparison choice. I don't remember GC's RPGs being technically impressive (Baten Kaitos looks great but you could argue that's because the backgrounds are prerendered) while the PS2 had some gorgeous games toward the end of its life cycle (FFXII, Valkyrie Profile 2, Odin Sphere, Wild Arms 5...).

Gamecube discs don't spin backwards. I can't believe people are still falling for that.

PS2 definitely picked up toward the end. In addition to the games you mentioned, I still think MGS3 had an amazing amount of detail. As for control complaints, one thing that always pissed me off about the Dualshock and Dualshock 2 was how the motor fucked up the controllers after a while. By the time I had MGS2, my launch model PS2's controller would cancel button inputs and fuck things up whenever the motor went off - that made the pressure-sensitive bits in MGS2 a pain, and I remember it being especially problematic with Maximo, where you were doing that downward thrust attack. Eventually I'd just turn off the vibration function by default.

Indeed, most of the effects in Mario Sunshine still look impressive to this day, and there are also several Wii games that look quite stunning, especially Nintendo's own and Sega's games. As for the controllers, the N64 one will always be my fav in terms of analog pads and my refurbished stick feels almost as good as a fresh original, just with a better mechanism. I never really got used to the GC pad though. While I had a GC back then, I hardly had any games. I started to catch up all those great games I sadly missed during the Cube's original run. As for Dualshocks, I can't recall ever having problems with any of mine, except for the DS3 I spilled over with cappucino^^"

I've never really looked into it, but I half wonder if it's from wrapping the cords and damaging the wires that way.

This is nothing in comparison to Nintendo's most-recent scam. Good thing I decided to leave console gaming behind for good. What a sick, corporate hellhole it has become.
But then again, it was always like that, even in the "glorified 80s and 90s", in the time where -games- mattered more. No, the customer was always to be a obedient, brand-loyal slave. Just didn't -fully- realize it until I began opening my eyes, even after many years of ignoring the AAA rubbish. Being disgruntled by mainstream gaming is just a small stepping stone towards a bigger vista. A vista in which modern console gaming is actually destroying the quality and freedom in gaming.
Stop falling for it.
