Seriously. Bison has tried to take over the world how many times now? How is this guy, a wanted criminal, even allowed to participate in a tournament, let alone host one? I don't think he's known to be any of them outside of 2. And really most people probably guessed it was a different guy as the Bison they knew was built by stitching two and a half people together.

Street Fighter 1= Normal Martial arts tournament, no M.Bison involvement, possibly hosted by Sagat since he was the last boss.
Street Fighter Alpha series= Technically none of these were actually tournaments, and I don't imagine his activities were well known outside of those involved.
Street Fighter 2= He hosted this tournament, but lore wise was considered dead at the hands of Akuma after it. Even then, he had a fairly serious criminla/terrorist organisation at his beck and call, I don't think he'd have had a hard time organising a tournament that flew the fighters around the world while he sat his ass in Thailand and waited for the winner to show up.
Street Fighter 4(Next chronologically)= Hosted by Seth. It turned out Bison wasn't actually dead and got a new body and was the "man behind the man", but until the tournament was basically over, nobody knew. He was essentially taking part in his own tournament again.
Street Fighter III series= As far as I know, this was hosted by Gil with no M.Bison involvement.
So over all, the only actual tournaments M.Bison takes part in are those he has run himself. And when the authorities (IE: Guile and Chun Li) seemed to get close to arresting him, Akuma came in and "killed" his ass...which was probably for the best as it allowed him to nick of and built his SF4 body.

But you know what doesn't make perfect sense?
Gil. What the fuck even is that guy. I mean, I shouldn't be asking this considering some of the other SF characters, but what the fuck is that guy

But I still have an issue with how Interpol hunted him down in Alpha 3. Chun-Li herself was there, they were sending bombers. And then I guess in SF2 they were just "Nah, we'll beat him up 1 on 1. It's all good". And yeah Gil is just super weird. He's born as the chosen one or something to that effect to this cult. Where that fits in him being divine is a bloody mystery to me.

I think context and characters are more important than "story" in fighting games.
Street Fighter II and III are great examples. There's a martial arts tournament. There are fighters with different personalities, fighting styles, and motives entering the tournament. The characters are vivid enough to seize the player's interest, and the overarching story formed by their fragmented narratives is just (barely) complete enough to be coherent, and still vague enough to be enticing. These things metabolize within the imagination during the intervals between ROUND 1, FIGHT and YOU WIN! It hits the perfect sweet spot between, say, Pit Fighter (no story, who are these people, who cares, I hate this game, etc.), and something like BlazBlue, which is so overwrought and convoluted as to be exhausting.

I have no interesst in 'story' for any medium, just a formula, like 'Journey of the Hero' that we had since frickin' Gilgamesh. Narrative however is where my interest lies, but with fighting games... naaaaaaaaaaah.

That's Abel's backstory? Shit, that slipped right past me. First: I lol'd so hard I must have woken up my neighbors. Well done, Sir, Well done. Second: Abel is A cheese-eating surrendering monkey, aka French. I know this because I really like this character. Third and last, Polanski is living in a grandiose chalet... In Switzerland. I'm so proud of my country. So, so proud. And no I don't understand why at all. But I must admit he made some very unshitty movies, really pretty good stuff. It's always problematic when a great artist is a fothermucker. Noted French author and super anti-semite and nazi collaborator Louis-Ferdinand Céline is the worst of these, because his stuff is riveting, and his crimes unbearable. Everybody has a different opinion on this very frequent problem. Since I think Polanski is good but not more than that, I'm waiting for the extradition, which will inevitably come... One day. My position is that no matter how good you are, you must pay for your crimes, of course. Did you ever see that documentary made about Polanski where they interviewed the actual now adult woman he raped and she was like "oh, it's no big deal, it was a long time ago and I'm over it now"? That doc was a while back (2009 I think?) and I would love to see how anyone saying "I was raped and it was no big deal" would go over in the present day culture. Street Fighter 1= Normal Martial arts tournament, no M.Bison involvement, possibly hosted by Sagat since he was the last boss. Street Fighter Alpha series= Technically none of these were actually tournaments, and I don't imagine his activities were well known outside of those involved. Isn't Gil not the leader of just any cult but the Illuminati? That's pretty weird of Capcom to bring conspiracy theory stuff into Street Fighter.

This is kind of unrelated, I have to wonder. In Marvel VS Capcom, if all the Marvel characters are supposed to share the same universe, does that mean that the same applies to the Capcom universe, as well? If so, Capcom's Earth is fucked, Galactus or no.

@gamer Griff: She spoke more with time. And her motivations came out: she never wanted to have to think about that again, and mostly, did not want to have her name and life in the media. Seems like it was, in fact, a pretty fracking big deal to her. Her motivations are much, much sadder than a laissez-faire attitude. She is scared and tired of ll this, that's what I get from her quotes. She is hurt, make no mistake. And 2009 is 6 years ago, it IS present day culture.
More than that, the fact that the victim of a rape minimizes the crime, is it still rape? You're goddam right it still is rape. Stockholm syndrome, pressure by important people, no matter: it's a fracking crime, a real, odioûs crime. Statutory rape, heard of it?
AAAAnyway, that Abel is Fench, not Swiss, alas. Is there even one Swiss chara in a fighting game?
