I've never really cared for the Bomberman series but sometimes I think I should try one or two of the games. Any recommendations? Bare in mind I would only do the ones that are on the systems I currently have. A list of them are....
Super Nintendo Nintendo 64 (I do have Bomberman Hero) Gamecube with Game Boy Advance Player Wii Game Boy Advance DS 3DS PS1 PS2 PS3 PSP Sega Saturn (though I intend to sell it sooner or later so I might not get anything.) Computer and Laptop

Any of the 16-bit ones or Saturn Bomberman are no brainers. I'd recommend just browsing Wii virtual console and pick one to sample.
The standalone Wiiware Bomberman is pretty decent too, but I haven't even tried the singleplayer component.

If you want a pure Bomberman experience, you should go with Super Bomberman 2 or Bomberman '93 (originally TurboGrafx-16, but I believe it's on Virtual Console). The 16-bit games beyond that tend to get a bit noisy with riding animals, different characters and other stuff (although those can make for more chaotic, frantic fun if that's what you're going for).
May be obvious, but just in case note that all Bomberman games are pretty bad single player games - multiplayer battles with at least four players is where it's at!

Yeah. Saturn Bomberman would be the way to fly, but you really need a room full of people for this series.

Just FYI since they aren't Bomber man games in the truest sense, but Bomberman Quest (GBC), Tournament (GBA), and Story (ds) are passable zelda-style adventures.

I've actually been oversaturated with multiplayer Bomberman for 15 years already. I don't get any enjoyment out of it anymore. Singleplayer Bomberman on the other hand is still great fun. Especially Bomberman 64 is a wonderful experience with its myriad of secrets and its sometimes clever puzzle approach to level design. Of course it's the most public opinion to say Bomberman is better in multiplayer, but stating that "all[!] Bomberman games are obviously[!] pretty bad[!] in singleplayer" is taking it a bit far, don't you think?

Multiplayer is obviously where it's at, but the single player can be pretty fun. It can be a bit monotonous from game to game, though. I mean, I'd hardly wanna marathon Super Bombermen 1~5.
I'd say Super 2 is the best traditional BM singleplayer game. The 64 games and Generations are also pretty fun, but they aren't really typical Bomberman games.

As everyone already said, the "mainline" Bomberman games are great for parties, but pretty bad single-player experiences. The portable entries and 64/64 2 add an RPG flair to the gameplay, with elemental bombs, tons of secrets and such, making for great single-player games too. And even though it's completely different from anything else in the series and nigh-universally hated because of it (IIRC, it was originally supposed to be a Bonk game), I really reccommend Bomberman Hero! Despite being an early 3D platformer, it's pretty linear in structure, and yet it also has some pretty nifty, difficult to obtain secrets. It also has an awesome electronica-inspired OST that sounds really good and fresh coming out of the N64, so I reccommend listening to it separetedly if you're into this kind of thing like me!

Thank god. Thought you were going to say Bomberman Act Zero for a second there.

Bomberman Hero is hated? It is one of my most played N64 games. =/ I wish I could play Saturn Bomberman again. You'll definitely have to import that one should you hunt it down.

I'm a fan of Neo Bomberman, though hardly anyone ever even mentions it. I also like the Japanese Bomberman 64, which is a totally different game than what was released in the US as "Bomberman 64". It's a traditional 2D Bomberman with a lot of different modes of play. And since we're talking the N64 here, it's easy to get a 4-player game going, no fussing with multitaps necessary.

Here are my recommendations:
- Super Bomberman 2-5 - Bomberman Max series - Pocket Bomberman - Bomberman GB series - Bomberman Quest - Bomberman Tournament - Bomberman Hero - Bomberman Land Touch series - Bomberman 2 for DS. Not to be confused with Bomberman II for NES. - Bomberman Ultra (the ulimate party game for PS3, till 8 players can play at the same console)
I haven't played Bomberman 64, Bomberman 64 - Second Attack and Bomberman Generation but they are highly praised.

Play Act Zero. It builds character.
All I can actually recommend is just Super Bomberman, so get that I suppose...

Wario Blast on the Game Boy would be my recommendation; it mostly keeps the original simple formula and spices it up with bosses and interesting environments. The particularly gruesomely detailed Game Over screen always amuses me as well!
