I remember how popular was the original when it came out, and I also recall some of the music (especially stage 2), but I never loved it, there's something about the visual design and atmosphere that never clicked with me, not counting that, beside the lack of some cool manouvers, DD felt dated the moment Konami and Capcom joined the fray. Looks like I didn't miss much on DD2; the DOS version looks more competent in stills but videos show it's ugly in motion. Once again, it's interesting to see how some IPs born in those years were reformulated on the NES.
I'll certainly follow further parts of the article, although it looks like the next one will go into the franchise's biggest Dork Age (III and V especially).

Game Boy DD1 did have a 2-player vs. mode, I think. It was the same VS. mode from the NES port.

Why is US box art generally proportionally inferior to how awesome the originals are? I'll take off-brand Fist of the North Star over shitty airbrushing any day.
Also, seconding (thirding? fourthing?) the RoDD love, and the pining for what could have been. Can't wait until the end when the bloody AMAZING cartoon gets covered.

Even in its unfinished form, RoDD is still one of the finest installments of the franchise by far.

-The PC port of DD3 is easily the series' best on the system; it's a decent port of a pretty shoddy game.
-"The knifes still deal an unfair amount of damage when they hit you, but with perfect timing it's now possible to punch them out of the air." - this was possible as early as DD1 in the Arcade.
-You MIGHT wanna use a synonym for "hoodlums" from time to time; the term's used three times in the updated portion (if I counted correctly).
-"The US version has a really boring title theme, but Return replaces it with the classic Double Dragon theme, whereas it is only playing hidden away in a stage in the middle of the game. It supposedly would have been a pivotal point in the story, but in the actual game its placement feels arbitrary." - I'd always thought that stage was supposed to harken back to the first stage of DD1.
-It's cool you mentioned in the Skid Row bit, but you might wanna specify that it is the American band - there is a band with that name featuring Gary Moore, too, which was an Irish band.

-"The knifes still deal an unfair amount of damage when they hit you, but with perfect timing it's now possible to punch them out of the air." - this was possible as early as DD1 in the Arcade. I also misspelled "knives" a million times. -You MIGHT wanna use a synonym for "hoodlums" from time to time; the term's used three times in the updated portion (if I counted correctly). It's already one of my many synonyms for "enemies". It's just that they have to be referred to a lot and I don't know any more words ("hoodlums" apparently just happens to be concentrated in the DD3 section a lot, but it's nothing compared to the 100+ instances of "enemy/enemies" across the complete article... That's why I would have put the remix of the stage 1 music of DD1 there (as does RoDD). The DD theme just sounds overly climactic compared to what's going on in that stage. Though I'm much more concerned by my failing to make it clear that the final part of the first sentence refers to SDD again, which makes it a bit confusing to read.

First of all, it's great to see this series featured on HG101. I just want to let Derboo know that there is actually a *single* continue in Double Dragon III NES. You just don't gain this ability until you reach level 4 first.

-Thugs -Bad guys/baddies -Goons -Evildoers -Henchmen -Opponents -Fiends -Mobsters Most of those I already have here or there, but I'll take some evildoers for hoodlums on page 4. Might just be my off impression of language, but when I hear "mobster" I first think of Al Capone era, and at the very least Italian/Mafia related.

But you beat up a mob... so I figured, hey, there's a term for that! But, yeah, they do gang up on you, and "gangsters" stills evoke a very different image. There's also "delinquents", but that's slightly cynical, considering that the Dragons themselves aren't exactly model citizens. By the way, what's the input quota for a contribution?

Neat little detail I like about Super Double Dragon - Billy uses open handed palm strikes and Jimmy uses closed fist punches. They function the same in the game, but it's a nice, understated way of showing that Jimmy is the more aggressive of the two.

That looks way more interesting than RC: Underground. Here's hoping for an NA release.
