I've got some odd answers to this question, but these are legit game ideas I really wanted to see as a gamer in the '90s, but which never came to pass: - Gilligan's Island Yeah, I know there exists a Gilligan's Island on NES, but what I wanted to see was more or less an open-world Gilligan's Island -- like, where the ENTIRE ISLAND, including all of its caves and even the shallows around it, could be freely explored. The mission would be to find a way off the island, but any other story elements would occur simply by stumbling upon things like old traps left over from forgotten wars, restless cannibalistic natives, etc. And each of the seven castaways would be playable, and could be freely switched out a la Maniac Mansion. I just always thought there was a lot of fertile ground for something like this, and it could've technically been done even on the NES using something like The Legend of Zelda as a baseline. - D4 Princess I doubt anyone here has even heard of this, but D4 Princess was an anime about a girl named Doris Ruridou who had a drill attached to the top of her head, and she joined what was essentially a pit-fighting club at her school, fighting other club who wielded various other magical power tools in artificial, destructible (yet controlled) environments. The game practically makes itself, and I almost feel like D4 Princess was meant to BE a game rather than an anime, as it genuinely feels like it would've made a rather thrilling one-on-one pit fight-style game. Later in life, then, I came up with these ideas: - Flatland As in, the classic novel about a square living in a 2D world, visiting the land of 1D, then being visited by a 3D being, with musings on what 4D life might be. Simply put, I really want to see a Flatland FPS -- like, literally, a first-person-view game that takes place in a 2D world. So the resolution would be something like 640x1. I came up with the idea as a joke originally, but in all honesty, I think this could be done, and it MIGHT even be kind of interesting to play! Heheh. - Ghost Hunters I used to be really into this show, and always thought it might be kind of neat to have a licensed game based on the Ghost Hunters IP in which you actually play as the ghost of a recently departed soul, and you need to get a message through to the living (like, perhaps, the name of your murderer), so you're forced to try to catch the attention of the family that now lives in your old house by subtly interacting with objects in ghostly ways. Some families will be scared off by you, but others will call in... the Ghost Hunters! And with their equipment, you might just be able to get your message through! ...Really, this started life more as a "Sim Ghost" idea, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized you could probably slap a Ghost Hunters license on it and sell more copies that way, and it would fit perfectly with the theme. - Star vs. the Forces of Evil A.k.a. the BEST SHOW ON MODERN AMERICAN TV. Seriously, if you haven't been watching Star, you've been missing out! There are a variety of possible games you could make based on the Star IP, but the one that comes to mind immediately is a simple Street Fighter-style fighting game. I'm not generally a fan of those types of games, but Star has an enormous cast of very diverse characters with very unique yet well-established powers -- it would lend itself PERFECTLY to the fighting game template, and I feel like it could be a whole lot of fun to play. (And I'm calling it right now: my main would be Hekapoo, because her dimensional scissor-swords make for just WAY too cool a weapon; plus, I love her design!) -Tom

I wish the 2009 Ghostbusters game had gotten a direct sequel before Harold Ramis' passing.
I wish there would be an "Uncharted but with Indiana Jones" game, which Lucasarts was working on at one point before the first Uncharted released and they canceled it because it was too similar to Uncharted even though the game was almost finished, which makes zero fucking sense to me, at any rate someone should revive that idea.
And I wish there would be an open world survival game based on Jurassic Park, think something along the lines of Alien Isolation.
Oh and speaking of which I wish Alien Isolation would get a direct sequel.

Super Mahou Shoujo Wars. Like SRW, except with magical girl shows instead of giant robot. This seems like a such an obvious thing that it makes me wonder why it hasn't happened. There actually was one game like that, Super Heroine Chronicle, released on PS3 and Vita in 2013, though it wasn't all magical girl shows, but every girl came from a show where there was fighting or things like magic, could go for a sequel though, it only has the first season of Symphogear which is a travesty...and no Precure, you know, that franchise that while not super popular across the world, is MASSIVE in Japan and has pratically stolen Sailor Moon's thunder there? Seriously, we should get a sequel to this: Anyways, my idea? Same deal, only focusing on Tokusatsu, either a Super Sentai SRW with stages for teams and their mechas, or a crossover where Kamen Riders, Super Sentai, Ultraman and other heroes like Kikaider or Kaiketsu Zubat can unite to fight evil...and yes i know there was also a game like that called Super Tokusatsu Taisen 2001 but...that was back in 2001 and it honestly looks a bit crappier than SRW games looked at that time: Come on, where is our newer Mahou Shoujo SRW AND Tokusatsu SRW!?

-a base management/planetary exploration/diplomacy game based on either Stargate SG-1 or Stargate Atlantis in which you need to research tech, manufacture equipment and/or secure alliances with other races in order to drive back an impending invasion from the Goa'uld/Wraith. -a video game adaptation of any of the Time Machine choose your own adventure books (If I had to pick one, it would be Scotland Yard Detective) as a point and click adventure game. -an endless runner based on Ivan Cankars's "On the Hill" in which you control a young girl fruitlessly running after a wagon on a hill, with said wagon representing the better life that she is seeking that she shall never have and the hill representing fatalism. Obviously, the game would be unwinnable.

A Guyver game how has this never happened and a game based on Apocalypse Zero could be crazy though it probably get toned down for japan. As for Magical girl game they was Majokko Daisakusen: Little Witching Mischiefs. A modded version of the Unholy War with enemy's from the developers other PS1 Pandemonium series. I'd love to see a game or series of games based on David Eddings Belgariad series. I know Legend Entertainment tried approaching him about making a game on his series back in the day and gotten shot down hard (though they still gave him a shout out in their Callahan's game), but I'm wondering if there'd be reception to doing one now.
Unsure if it'd work as an RPG, an action-adventure, or if it'd be best set going the Telltale Games adventure game route though.

Oh! I guess one more from me: I've always wanted to see a Zelda-esque adventure RPG based on the Susan Cooper book "Over Sea, Under Stone" -- the predecessor to "The Dark Is Rising," which some of you may know as the book that got adapted into that absolutely godawful movie "The Seeker" (they seriously screwed that up as much as they possibly could've!). I actually had an idea a while back to try to create a game that would procedurally generate a new version of the town of Trewissick every time you play, as I think the general structure of the book's events would lend itself well to every new game creating a new instance of the town to explore. Generally, I HATE playing procedurally generated games, as they feel really impersonal to me, but I love the idea of designing a really good procedural generation routine for a complex game location -- I think it'd be really fun to program something like this, even if I wouldn't personally enjoy playing it as much.

How long you got? Seriously, I come up with game design ideas on a bafflingly regular basis, so I've a lot of these floating around in my head.
Regular Show: Rigby to the Rescue!:
A retro-styled Metroidvania that can best be described as a combination between the gameplay of Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap and the map system/cutscenes of Clash at Demonhead. You play as Rigby, who bunked off work to go to the arcades. This was quite convenient, since a gang of villains (either brand new or from the show) arrive at the park and kidnap everyone else (in other words, Mordecai, Benson, Pops, Skips, Muscle Man and High Five Ghost). So, with only Eileen acting as something of an objective reminder, you have to go explore the town and the surrounding areas to fight whoever kidnapped your friends and save them.
Looney Tunes (Arcade):
A mid-90s side-scrolling beat-em-up (made by either Konami or the team behind Streets of Rage 2) where you play as a whole bunch of Looney Tunes, with four-player co-op. I don't have anything else to say for this beyond "You had a billion Looney Tunes games in the 90's; why did nobody make this?! It's so obvious!"
Sonic SatAM:
A free-roaming platformer that combines the freeform objectives of Crackdown with the sidequests that affect your big missions from Freedom Fighters. You can play as Sonic, Sally, Bunnie, Rotor, Tails, and Antoine (each with their own skills to make playing missions and exploring areas unique every time) as you plan and complete missions within the imposing Robotropolis. Knothole would serve as a hub area to relax, upgrade characters, buy items and more. You could also explore regions beyond these two areas: perhaps they would serve as one-off set-piece missions like the Da Vinci invention quests in Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood?
Neon Genesis Evangelion:
An adaptation of the original series and End of Evangelion from a purely gameplay perspective. You play as Shinji, Asuka, Rei, Misato or Kaji. The gameplay would be split into two types: City and Angel Fights. In the city, everyone plays pretty much the same - a free-roaming area where you can explore Tokyo III and the surrounding countryside. In the Angel Fights, everyone plays different. Shinji, Asuka and Rei pilot the Evas, which take place in a third person fighting game similar to the Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm games, but each character gets different things to do depending on what happens in the show. Misato's gameplay would involve RTS-style gameplay as you formulate plans and deploy weapons/devices to help the Evas. As Kaji, you would sneak through NERV/Seele HQ in a manner akin to Metal Gear to find important information.
The Legend of Zelda: Well, excuuuuuuuuse me!:
Your typical 2D Zelda game, but with the setting, characters and atmosphere of the cartoon. I genuinely think the cartoon's interpretation of the games (all two of them, at the time) had a good foundation, even if the execution was a bit lacking, and I'd love to see a more dry, comedic atmosphere to your usual Zelda game. Even if a lot of work would have to be done to make sure that it wouldn't be an insufferable snarkfest like most 'comedy' games.

There are a lot of books that would translate incredibly well to video games. - David Brin's Uplift series
- Kim Stanley Robinson's Mars trilogy
- Frederik Pohl's Heechee series
- Gene Wolfe's The Book of the New Sun series
And there are a lot of tabletop games that would make for great video games as well. I realize there have been video games for a few of these, but in all cases they were made more than two (and in some cases three) decades ago, so a new video game would be completely different than any previous games. - Dark Sun

EDIT: Seeing as how no one else mentioned them, the TV shows Babylon 5, Firefly, and Sliders would have made great video games as well. The latter is worthy of particular interest, I strongly disliked the TV show Sliders but I can't deny that the general premise could have made a solid video game.

When Bioware first announced Sonic RPG, I had my fingers crossed SO HARD that it was going to be based on SatAM... but nope! That's part of why I love Freedom Planet so much: it's as close to the Sonic SatAM game of my dreams as any game has ever gotten. Your idea for a Zelda cartoon game is also really intriguing to me. A Bud Spencer beat 'em up not made years after the genre's popularity had waned. A contemporary JoJo's game for Battle Tendency (from when the arc was freshly out, so the late 80s). The world tour style setup of the game lends itself nicely for some early Genesis platforming around the world. A good Akira game. A good Miami Vice game. Several if possible. A good Lethal Weapon game. I support the idea of a good Akira game to forget the atrocity that is the Amiga game

Someone mentioned Battle Royale. Honestly back when I first discovered D&D and pen n paper gaming that novel seemed almost like a rulebook in novel form. I mean it clearly outlines how the game works, what all equipment can be randomly dished out, the starting areas, and even gives you stuff like the emotionless kid who might help or hinder just depending on the flip of a coin.
I almost wrote up rules for it, but was too lazy to do so.
