I've always been rooting for the villains. My favorite 80s cartoon character ever was Starscream. I cried when they killed him in the animated movie.. right when he was finally taking his rightful place as the leader of the Decepticons. At least he kicked major ass in the live action movie. Starscream got his kudos in a post-movie string of episodes starting with (IIRC) "Starscream's Ghost". For some reason, Starscream comes back as a ghost (yes I know that makes no sense, but why should only organic beings get souls?) and is working for Unicron. He has the power to possess another Transformer's body and is only obeying Unicron to get a body of his own, which he constantly pesters Unicron for and is denied. Unicron is trying to get his head onto Cybertron so he can connect to it and make the planet his new body (again, not making much sense). Events unfold until Unicron's head is actually on Cybertron with Starscream's ghost inside and nary a body for him to possess. Starscream can't actually hook up the cables to the planet and tells Unicron to give him a body. Unicron acquiesces, beams shoot out from his eyes, and Starsceam is corporeal once more, with the cables in his hand, ready to lead the fate of the Transformers and the universe to complete and certain doom. "Now," says Unicron "Connect the cables!!" "Do it yourself!", laughs Starscream, and drops them, saving the universe by being the biggest dick ever.

Not quite a cartoon, but when I was a youngun one episode of Sesame Street scared the crap out of me. I think Bert and Ernie were in this Egyptian temple/pyramid or something. Just the environment frightened me deeply. Holy smokes here it is: youtube.com/watch?v=9nSmWHHZpVE You too? Holy shit that was scared me. As for cartoons, Dumbo's pink elephants creeped me out (took me a while to figure out he was drunk and not tripping balls for seemingly no reason), the My Little Ponies episode where the ponies were kidnapped and turned into dragons (tell me them being carried off by their hair wasn't scary), a couple David the Knome moments, and more that will come to me as I try to sleep tonight.
