I loved the Asterix game, I was able to 1cc it easily thanks to how easy was to gain extra lifes with points.
The downside of the game is that you only need to use the charged punch all the time since every time you hit a roman with it, you get a helmet for extra score and you could hit some twice for two helmets getting a great score. This is a shame since it don't allows you to use the fun grapple attacks. Of course in stages featuring no romans such as the german and arab ones you can unleash all your fury.
Bucky O'hare also was a game that I could 1cc, using the duck you can spam his special attack hitting the enemies from safe positions, also the most important movement in the game was the jump -> attack+jump attack since if you hit something with it, you become invulnerable for a second, crucial for surviving the vilest bosses.

I didn't write the part about Metamorphic Force, and I haven't played that game in months, so I can't really comment on that.

Check this out. I just found this forum post with tiers for X-Men. I never would have guessed that anybody would have ranked them like this myself.
1. Nightcrawler
The best character hands down. His attacks are fast, he's got a low kick combo that lets him duck under attacks and can hit three enemies at once (usually combos can only hit two at once, the third enemy will pummel you). He has the best flying kick in the game - comes out quickly, great range and quick landing recovery. Nightcrawler happens to be the shortest character as well, which means things like sentinel missiles won't even touch him while he's standing. Everyone else has to jump, move or get hit. Jump kick is okay, stays rather close to the ground which is nice. Oh and his mutant power is great too, not that anyone should rely on it to get through the game.
His only weakness is he has a short reach, which means he has to get close to start his combos, but his punch speed helps him out some.
2. Storm
Longest attack and throw range out of all the characters, so she can take out most enemies even before they walk close enough to start attacking. Those two things alone make her #2. Mutant power is good too. I think hers will keep going as long as you can keep the tornado on screen.
Her flying kick (or in her case a dive attack) absolutely sucks. She takes forever to recover from it when she lands, which means you cannot use it to move around quickly and the only safe option Storm has in the air is to knock enemies down with the dive. She also has some trouble when enemies get in her face as her ground attacks are not the fastest, but that's a problem for everyone except Nightcrawler.
3. Dazzler
Dazzler is #3 because of her throw glitch. No one else has this. This comes in extremely handy for her when she has to take out multiple enemies quickly. Her punch attacks have decent range too, although they're not the fastest either. Flying kick is decent, but not as good as Nightcrawler's or Wolverine's. Mutant power has good screen coverage.
4. Wolverine
He doesn't have as much range on his punch attacks as Storm or Dazzler, and that hurts him in close-range because his punching speed isn't as fast as Nightcrawler's. He does have another better punch combo, but you need to be at the right distance for it to come out. Good flying kick and the best jump kick in the game (stays out for the longest, unlike most other characters who kick once and are then vulnerable).
5. Colossus
He's got good speed on his punch attacks (about as good as Nightcrawler IIRC) and jump kick is okay, but he's second last because his flying kick (in his case it's a punch) has a weird arc to it which makes it harder to use well. It makes him float in the air longer than he has to and timing gets harder. Also his throws are kinda useless. The headlock punch doesn't clear away other enemies and the extra hits are a totally useless feature. His other throw does clear enemies but is hard to get consistently.
6. Cyclops
Poor Cyclops. Next to no range for his punch attacks, and a mutant power that just plain sucks. I think the only things he has going for him are a nice kick combo (at correct distance) and a combo ender (the spin kick) that can also hit opponents behind him.
Does anybody have any clue what Dazzler's "throw glitch" is or how to do it?

Hi there, long, long time reader (like back to the Review Archive days) first time poster.
I feel as a nitpicker that I should point out that this is missing at least one, maybe two games if you're willing to account for the fact that one of those is a mash-up of genres.
First is "S.P.Y. Special Project Y" from 1988 which includes a not very well made beat em component amongst platformer and Space Harrier style gameplay. The game itself is one of Konami's worst but it deserves a shoutout since it is a beat-em-up.
The second is something that I would understand why you would not include it. "Aliens" from 1990, which is actually a shooter (not Contra-style but close) but plays like a 2.5d beat-em-up with depth perception and everything. If Bucky O'hare is going to make the cut I think Aliens deserves to as well.

This has already been brought up. There aren't even any melee attacks in it. Just looking like a beat-em-up isn't enough to qualify.

Worth noting in the X-Men part of the article - the game appears to have been based on the "Pryde of the X-Men" cartoon: en.marveldatabase.com/Pryde_of_the_X-MenThe problem is, the pilot was never picked up for a regular series so the source material that the game was directly based on isn't entirely evident. Kitty actually makes a cameo appearance in the game.

I haven't played this in several months, but I remember this just being a straight action game. Its a basically a lot of games combined. The first level plays like Space Harrier/Burning Force/etc., the second and fouth is a beatemup where you can't jump for some reason, the third is a remake of sorts of Devastators, and the rest of the game is a combination of beat-em-up stages and platformers that play a lot like Rolling Thunder. Game's an interesting novelty at least, but the fact that Konami was still in their limited continues period combined with the difficulty makes it less likeable when you actually play it.

I'll take a look at this later (today, likely) when I have the time.

Ok, I went back and played S.P.Y. Special Project Y again. Its beat-em-up-ness is open for debate. Could anybody else weight in on this? Keep in mind that only the second and fourth stages are in question here.

Well, I haven't played nor seen it, but if Bayou Billy is covered, it's probably worth at least a brief write-up.

Alright then. I'll try to write a couple (or whatever) paragraphs and have that in by tommorrow with screenshots.

You should have just gotten the screenshots. I'll just post the text here after I spell check it. Put it right after Bayou Billy so that they all maintain some kind of reasonably correct chronological order.
Text to follow shortly.
