www.hardcoregaming101.net/konamibeatemups/konamibeatemups.htmThis article takes a look at most of Konami's licensed beat-em-ups like The Simpsons, Bucky O'Hare, X-Men, and Batman Returns, as well as a few of their original games like Bayou Billy, Metamorphic Force and Gaiapolis. They're also, of course, responsible for the ever popular TMNT beat-em-ups, but that will be part of an upcoming, separate article. I was just down the Jersey Shore last weekend, and a few of the arcades still have both TMNTs, The Simpsons and even a six player X-Men. So awesome.

A few random comments:
- Shouldn't Bart's alias in the Simpsons section be "The Bartman"? Did you snap that picture a bit too soon?
- The third paragraph from the X-Men article seems kind of garbled, like there are sentences or words missing. The laughably bad translation of X-Men probably bears mentioning, as well ("Welcome to die, X-Chicken!").
- I always thought the way that the screen shook whenever you threw or slammed an enemy in Batman Returns was a nice touch- it made Batman's moves all feel really powerful.
- Gaiapolis looks pretty cool; I'll have to try that game sometime.

Nice article. I wasn't expecting to see Bayou Billy in article form. I've always loved the Simpson's arcade game, but I never got the chance to use the co-op attacks. It's a shame, because by the sounds of things those attacks add an extra layer of depth to the game.

Nice! I just picked up Batman Returns (SNES) for the first time ever and I found I loved it. Funny how before this week I never knew it was a beatemup!
Oh, and I'm sure this article will drum up some requests for the Sunsoft Batman games to be covered. Hopefully I can get off my ass one day and oblige.
Oh, and for the X-Men section...Colossus isn't dead anymore...he was found in good health in Joss Weedon's (of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly fame) Astonishing X-Men!

Oh, and for the X-Men section...Colossus isn't dead anymore...he was found in good health in Joss Weedon's (of Buffy, Angel, and Firefly fame) Astonishing X-Men! Well yeah, he is neither Jason Todd nor Bucky (both of whom have apparently also come back in their respective continuities. Sigh.). Speaking of X-Men, although I realize that space constraints are probably a concern, it might be a nice touch to get a couple snapshots of the 6-player version if possible, particularly if you can do so with all six players (even if it's out of the attract mode...). I think you really need to capture the crazy if you can. - HC

How come the writing style for the X-Men section took such a change?

Playing X-Men with MP83 and Sotenga over Kaillera was a real hoot, especially once we realized that by cramming quarters into the game we had unlimited lives and could refresh our powers just by dying. Colossus scored many a kill that game with his power: the Tan from Hell.

The first Bayou Billy pic says "Game title" but it is not a shot of the title.

The article is really good, but why isn't the Aliens beat-em-up in there? It was also made by Konami.

This is so cool to see this go up. Great, great bunch of games, there. And just for the record, the reference to those shitty Christopher Nolan movies being "awesome" did not come from me. Also, something went horribly wrong with some of the text in X-Men. Namely that one of the sentences got screwed up and rearranged. The first two paragraphs (after the part in parenthesis) should look like this: Here it is. The king of all arcade exclusive games. Why Konami never got around to porting it to anything we can only guess, but either way everybody played the hell out of this thing during its day. Just like Mortal Kombat that same year, this game alone was reason enough for many people to take a trip to the arcades with their friends. For so many people to play the thing so much in the arcades, and then never see that pay-off of a home port, well... that just sucks. A SNES version would have taken up many an afternoon for a lot of people, but, alas, it was never to be. If Konami had kept the license long enough to bring this one home, it could have been the game that sold a million multi-taps.
The plot's about as brain dead as you could possibly hope for from a beat-em-up. There's this crazy evil guy name Magneto who's being crazy and evil and trying to destroy crap and take over the world. So it's up to the X-Men to beat him down.... Just not in bold, of course. The article is really good, but why isn't the Aliens beat-em-up in there? It was also made by Konami. Because, despite its beat-em-up-style playing field, it's a pure run n' gun. You don't even have any melee attacks.

The best part about X-Men multiplayer is making music with the characters' death screams as everybody walks off a ledge over and over again.
The second best part is making fun of the poor sap who isn't using Nightcrawler or Colossus
-
Perhaps it's a dipswitch setting, but when I tried to play Asterix, I game over'd after using some number of credits (ie how some arcade games limit the number of credits you're allowed, like Contra). Anybody else experienced the same?

Colossus scored many a kill that game with his power: the Tan from Hell. Heh. I can't fault MP for spamming the hell out of that attack. It sure as hell worked. These are a lot of fantastic games, and they justify why I put Konami up at the "Powerful Four" of BEU titles alongside Technos, Capcom, and Sega.

Wow, I never knew Konami did an Asterix beat 'em up. I'll have to check that out.
I do remember playing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game all the time as a kid (It was in my local shopping center, so I was always nicking off from my parents to hang around the game, either to play, or to hope somebody else was).
I can also remember seeing the simpsons game in an airport, but never had the chance to play it, though I did have the PC version. Was never able to get past heaven, as the PC version had limited continues.
