derboo, you're officially my hero, because you interviewed my other hero "RUNMAL" and made him human for me. I got Ninja Ryuukenden when it came out, and I was instantly drawn. I wasn't even in school yet. However, when I got Ninja Ryuukenden II (also when it came out), I knew that games would become my profession. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. If nobody makes a Ninja Ryuukenden IV, I WILL MAKE IT MYSELF, Famicom style! Very inspiring. PS: A "Sai" is a japanese weapon, the ones Mileena in MK II has and "Raphael" the Ninja Turtle. If you think it that way, I doubt you'll confuse "says" with "sais" ever again

Raph is the best, but why the quotation marks? Just curious. I think you'd do a mighty fine job with Ninja Gaiden (sorry, it just doesn't feel right saying "Ryuukenden") IV. Heck, to be honest, when I saw that you had completed Wind & Water, and seeing you on this forum, it all came together as a sort of "Hey, he's just a normal person, like everyone else. Well, so am I, and I can do it too!" It was cool to see "just another forum guy" make a great game, so yeah, it inspired me

Personally, I'd love to see what NG would have looked like if it made it to the SNES. Not like Trilogy, I mean, but a full, 16-bit sequel. The only thing really close to it I can think of is Hagane and maybe Skyblazer.

@ derboo: you're still my hero @smithee Ace Pilot: I have no idea as to the quotation marks. Maybe cause Raphael is a Renaissance painter for me Ryuukenden is the only way I knew it until the third one, and to me "Gaiden" is the new Itagaki series. Thanks for the compliments, I wish I owned the rights to NR!!!!! I would definitely go Famicom style, but yes, it would have been nice to see a (proper) "16-bit" iteration of the series. And just cause I'm super happy, here's some pixelly fiction I made for you guys The last one would be Ryuukenden IV

I just wanna say thanks and good job to the writer. Particularly for the interview. The few interviews we have on HG101 are all very good journalism, I think—excellent, informed questions.
Thanks for your hard work, this is great.

I found this preview of Ninja Gaiden Shadow from the Sept. '91 issue of Nintendo Power (the Super Mario World cover), back when it was still a Shadow of the Ninja game. This was published three months before Nintendo Power's coverage of the final version on their Dec. '91 issue (Metroid II cover), so this change occurred a bit late during the development.

This is also very interesting. I intended to let the stuff rest for a while, but I guess in light of this, I have to cough up just one more small update. Also, once again thanks to all the nice comments on the interview, and special thanks to everyone who contributed suggestions for questions in the other thread. I just wanna say thanks and good job to the writer. Particularly for the interview. The few interviews we have on HG101 are all very good journalism, I think—excellent, informed questions. BTW., does the site just have this and the localization legends interviews, or is there something else hidden away deep inside any inconspicious article?

I can get you the Nintendo Power reviews of the NES games (as well as Ninja Gaiden Shadow) if you want them.

Would be awesome to read them, even if there should be nothing to find for the article. Thanks in advance.
BTW., one more question I should probably ask before making the update: Did the Ninja Gaiden site from Classicgaming move anywhere, or is it just gone?

I mainly downloaded this for the original artwork featured on their articles (no doubt made by one of Tokuma's in-house artists in Japan). I miss the days of the old Nintendo Power, when they would provide their own artworks for the games they covered. Nowdays, I think they simply use whatever render or illustrations they get from a press kit. Ninja Gaiden III review from Nintendo Power Vol. 27 (August 1991) img25.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=008gbt.jpgNinja Gaiden Shadow from Nintendo Power Vol. 31 (December 1991) img340.imageshack.us/gal.php?g=073w.jpgI will upload the Ninja Gaiden I and II reviews later. The Ninja Gaiden II review is a bit light, since they mostly saved their coverage for the strategy guide. Do you need the NG II guide as well?

Those are cool, thank you. I found a scan of the guide somewhere a while ago (this is where I got the few pages on page 8 of the article from), so I can save you a few uploads there. I need to gather more info on Tokuma Shoten and their cooperation with NOA some time... now I wish I had shown Kato some of the Nintendo Power art... The guide actually has the names of the artists. Did the regular issues give any credit whatsoever?

They credit several artists on both issues, so its going to be a bit hard to determine who did the artwork for both Ninja Gaiden reviews. I wouldn't be surprise if it was the same artist who did the illustrations for the Ninja Gaiden II guide.
Tokuma Shoten published quite a lot of video game hintbooks in Japan, including Family Computer Magazine (which I think is still being published under the name of Famimaga). The Ninja Gaiden I and II reviews will be uploaded soon. I found a preview of Ninja Gaiden III as well, but it didn't show or mention anything interesting.

The guide credits Katsuya Terada and Kazunori Aihara as illustrators. Do those show up in the relevant issues? I think the guide looks more like catering to a distinctly western audience, while I could imagine the artwork in the reviews you uploaded could also fly in Japan.
Are there any sites that have full page scans of old Famimaga issues? Did they similar stuff with that mag?
