This is really interesting to contrast with the more recently written developer notes in All About SNK Fighters 1991-2000 and on SNK's King of Fighters website.

About Heavy D!: "His name comes from an American rap group, but we thought using it directly might entail some copyright problems, so we added that exclamation point to the end." GENIUS

They're completely right, it's the reason kill.switch on the PS2/XBox/PC/GBA is spelled the way it is.

"One of his special moves is called “Dash Screw Body Press”, but among the developers, we called it the “Dash Gamera.”"
So Brain Battler is really neat Brian Battler is filled with meat......yeah doesn't have the same ring to it.

Thanks to RECBT, I can't think of Brian as anything but "Battlerman", a sad cross between John McGuirk and Adam West.

Perhaps it's also worth noting that a few months before KOF '94, Viccom released where KOF got its name and some references from: Wang Jhung Wang (lit. The King of Kings), later released outside of Korea as Fight Fever. Even the envelope seen in some parts of the KOF franchise was used by Karate Kenji.

Except that the "King of Fighters" name had been in use by SNK since the first Fatal Fury game, where it's the game's subtitle and is also mentioned as the name of the tournament being held; that game was released in 1991.

Also SNK and Viccom were very friendly towards each other at that time and Viccom staff received training at SNK from 1990-1992.

Mai should really have to fight in a full-metal Back Brace by now (well, she would if the characters actually aged at all anymore)...
