www.hardcoregaming101.net/rott/rott.htmI remember this coming out a year or so after Doom. From a technological standpoint it was really behind the times, but it was just so damned goofy that it was hard to dislike. I particularly liked God/Dog mode.

Yeah, ROTT and Strife were 2 of my favorite FPSs of the time. Not ever including the supposedly already finished female enemies even when computers had enough RAM to allow for it was a real shame. DIP (or was it Apogee?) actually released the source code quite a few years ago but nobody did anything with it. A double shame.

Rise of the Triad was actually a lot of fun, particularly if you were cheating. I think the summary hits the nail on the head- it's permeated by this "C'mon, you didn't really expect us to take this seriously?" feel that's actually kind of refreshing compared to Doom and Quake.

Daaamn was this thing gorey! If you blew somebody up who was standing near a wall their blood and guts would actually splatter against the wall and drip down.
And I had totally forgotten about the messages that you got when you tried to quit the game. I remember repeatedly trying to quit over and over again so that I could see all of the different messages.

My roommate was recently talking about Strife. I remember playing a demo on some PC Gamer CD, but I think I recall the reviews being kinda harsh, since the Doom engine was a bit dated by the time it was actually released.

My roommate was recently talking about Strife. I remember playing a demo on some PC Gamer CD, but I think I recall the reviews being kinda harsh, since the Doom engine was a bit dated by the time it was actually released. The game is overall very rough around the edges (the possibility of stealth never works well), the Doom engine has clearly some difficulties in handling all (happened in Hexen already), and apparently they never solved a game design flaw that makes possibile to make a certain action before you should, thus blocking any possibile progress - luckily, it happens early in the game. That said, for such a low-budget production, I found it an interesting experiment, also in stretching the possibilities of a dated engine, and an enjoyable game.

Well, this is a classic. I think I still have the original box somewhere, though I loaned the CD to a friend whom I haven't seen since. ROTT was a little archaic technically even when it was released, but it IS still a tremendously fun game in single or multiplayer. Glad to see it covered! Other more obscure 3D FPSs I'd love to see HG101 cover: both of Bethesda's Terminator games (SkyNET and Future Shock), Corridor 7, Operation: Bodycount, The Catacomb Abyss, Blake Stone, TekWar, WitchHaven. I have Corridor 7 so I might have a go at it myself...

Interesting. I was reading the article when I got to the character blurbs, and started thinking, "Huh, this reminds me ALOT of what I remember detailed in the original Doom Bible". Most of these ideas, like the detailed story, team of quirky characters, and "realistic" levels were ditched in favor of Carmack's more simplistic design. IIRC, all of these were concepts from Tom Hall, who later left midway through Doom's development. You then mentioned Tom Hall later in the article, which pretty much confirms it. Rise of the Triad was awesome. I used to play it a lot as a kid (heheh). Now I want to play it again.
Here's a few typos I found from the first paragraph:
"Apogee, the shareware giant, took the plans from a scrapped Wolfenstien 3D sequel and turned it into its own game - Rise of the Triad, affectionately referred to by its fans as "ROTT." The game pioneered several interesting ideas into the genre, including rocket jumping and enviromental destruction, but it never recieved the popularity of Doom."

I have Corridor 7 so I might have a go at it myself... Corridor 7, Operation Bodycount, Tekwar... Ewww. Capstone was quite infamous for the low quality of almost all their games - and their motto "The pinnacle of entertainment software" didn't make things better. Found Witchaven decent though. There were even worse FPSes though: try Fortress of Dr. Radiaki, or Isle of the Dead... Man, an article on those "trashy" games would be cool. The first Catacomb game even predates Wolfenstein 3D! While Blake Stone was an interesting evolution of that engine, but had the misfortune of coming out just one week before Doom. There are many forgotten games in the FPS genre, most were hardly outstanding to be honest, but had interesting features especially if you're a fan of the genre - they were just lost in a sea of releases. I think there was some thread on FPSes in the general section, better move there.

Nope, because this came out after Doom (and it appears the full version didn't come out until after Doom II and Heretic), hence why it's generally described as outdated. Wow, some of those I can barely recall but I do know Bethsoft made 5 Terminator games, all of them FPS (The Terminator, 2029, and Rampage are the other ones). If anyone knows these games well (I was never interested but they would always be mentioned in brochures in the TES games I bought), they would truly be a great series to cover since there's an incredible evolutionary aspect to the games. There's also a Witchaven II but it plays very similarly to the original, which means it's still a fun game.

I believe he was referring to my comment about many of the concepts in the game being ideas Tom Hall had had for the original Doom that were vetoed.

Pretty much every time I talk to Rasa he brings up how awesome Terminator: Future Shock is. I remember the engine being very impressive for the time, but I only ever played a demo.
