Maybe take it a little easier on some of the marvel characters.... calling the Punisher the most generic anti-hero ever (even though I agree) and refering to Ironman as "some guy" might get you some unwanted hate mail. I don't know.... it's always a possibility. I'd try be careful dealing with the marvel crew... Discoalucard toned my comments WAY down. I was not kind at all, and I firmly believe I was simply being objective. Those characters obviously have fans, and I am obviously not among them, but super heroes are too goofy for most people to take seriously, and I am confident that I was simply bringing a everyman perspective to their character profiles. About Cyberbots... The only reason that those NES game have the characters that Dynasty Wars has is because they are based on the same source material. Whereas Cyberbots is a direct sequel to Armored Warriors. Getting back to the actual games, everybody here who has even the slightest interest in the genre should give Alien vs. Predator, Battle Circuit, and Dungeons & Dragons Shadow Over Mystara a shot, at the very least. Awesome, awesome games that are well worth your time. The others are pretty good as well. I never knew there were so many Out of curiousity, which had you not heard of before?

I discovered Battle Circuit thru MAME. I don't think it's that good.
Alien Vs Predator is one of the best for sure. See if you can find all of Lynn's attacks and combos!!!

C&D last boss: www.vgmuseum.com/end/arcade/b/cadi.htmAlien vs predator and both Dungeons & Dragons games are awesomely great. But I found Battle Circuit to be a bore. At first I was exited because I've never heard of that Capcom beat-em up, but after playing it and even finding the secret level and true last boss, I found it to be a bit meh.

Only 'cause you haven't played with 3 others. It's 4 player action at it's best... Wait, secret level...true last boss? How do you do this??

"Only 'cause you haven't played with 3 others. " I didn't play Dungeons & Dragons with other players either and I loved it "Wait, secret level...true last boss? How do you do this?? " You need to achieve like 70 million points (or something) before the last level to access the true last level. Check Gamefaqs for the correct info.

I found an error in the Knights of the Round section regarding blocking. Unlike in King of Dragons, blocking is done at any time but with a time limit of 2 or 3 seconds. It is very easy to block, but it will leave you open for back attacks.

Pretty good article, but I don't think X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse or Marvel Super Heroes for SNES should've been included. They're not really beat'em ups. Including those two is getting dangerously close to including some Mega Man games in there because that's mostly what the X-Men and Marvel Super Heroes games were modelled after. I also thought you were a little rough on X-Men..

Another thing you should definitely mention about Alien Vs Predator: Linn is the quickest character and also the one with the biggest set of moves and combos.
-She can air-combo lower enemies. Try jumping and Down + Attack to send enemies airborne, then wait until you are at arms length and Down + Attack to finish with the most damaging throw in the game (about 70% damage).
-Her best combo: Attack x 3 (hold button after last hit) > Down + Attack (slide) > Forward Forward (katana attack) > release Attack button (Chi attack)
None of the other characters have nearly the same amount of attacks Linn has, that's why she is so weak. That's worth mentioning.

A one plane beat-em-up is still a beat-em-up. I was as nice as I could see reasonably being. Those are not great games. The second game is a disaster.

Nobody's saying that just because he slams Mutant Apocalypse on HG101 that all of a sudden it becomes indisputible fact that the game sucks. You don't have to agree with him if you like the game. It's not like he'll round up a posse to hunt you down or be you'll be branded as a pariah of the board community... (Though I know sometimes the internet CAN be that way)
This place seems more reasonable than that.

Regardless of any opinions that anybody has about Marvel characters or those two games, the whole point of this write up is just that Capcom made some damn fine beat-em-ups. Simple as that. Why my comments and the tone that I took with them seemed appropriate to me, is that beat-em-ups are kind of like the video game equivalent of B-movies. So I was kind of "Mystery Science Theater 3000"-ing the games as I was playing them, and then I wrote everything down, and then carved out the fat and did touch ups.

I don't really care about your opinion of X-Men. You're free to hate it. The fact of the matter is, it's just not a beat'em up. There's a pretty strict beat'em up formula that X-Men just doesn't adhere to beyond simply what plain it takes place on. There's way too much platforming. As a matter of fact, in many stages the platforming completely superceeds the fighting. What's the difference between X-Men and Mega Man Zero? They both have lots of enemies, multi-hit combos, special moves, similar stage structures and design.

I agree. It's more of an action/platforming game with fighting elements than a run of the mill beat'em up. That's like calling Mega Man X a run'n gun game just because you attack with a gun But, if Cyberbots is there, then X-Men and Marvel SH can be there too.

While there are portions that involve a lot of platforming, I would absolutely call both X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse and especially Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems beat'em ups because. Regardless of their platforming portions both feature dozens of areas where there's no gimmick and it's just you squaring off against half a dozen enemies repeatedly until you've beaten enough and the screen scrolls forward to the next conflict. The loosening up of the level design is a design decision that was supposed to allow the super powered characters of Marvel Comics to be portrayed accurately without making the games absurdly easy because you're using a guy that can red death beams out of his eyes on a whim. To not include these two games amongst a list of beat'em ups is to have the same mindset that would have you believe Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes is a one on one shmup or that Ninja Warriors Again isn't a beat'em up.
The lack of isometry or over abundance of platforming should not be a deciding factor when the vast majority of the gameplay consists of beating up enemies with pre-canned combos and some special moves. This is especially true of Marvel Super Heroes in War of the Gems. For every pit you jump over there's a few billion Evil Hawkeyes.
