Also, what is the random scare you're talking about? (you can mark spoilers) I would, but I forgot how to add the spoiler thingie and quick search yielded nothing. Anyway, I hope you won't burn out, since the series is rather conservative and pretty much if you have played one, you have played all. I wasn't that freaked out by the second game either, but the third one is on par with the first one, even somewhat scarier in places.

For the record [spiler][/spoler] put the text you want in between. Make sure they're both spelled correctly, because I had to mess them up to show it.

Yeah, I see your point, I just finished Fatal Frame 2 and while I still enjoyed it a lot it's not nearly as scary as the first game (though don't get me wrong, it has it's moments), I have the third game on the way but I'm starting to get a bit fatigued so I'm gonna play a couple of other games first.
I'm not sure what exactly it is about the second game that makes it not as scary, but a big part of it is the village setting is a bit of a mistake I think, the first game had this great claustrophobic feeling of being trapped in this mansion with all these ghosts and it's hard for the second game to recapture that feeling when you spend a good bit of time outside and could technically just haul ass into the woods.
Also, I think the first game goes beyond just feeling like a "survival horror game, but with ghosts" and feels like a real "haunted house simulator" for various reasons (random ghosts, random poltergeist activity, random whispers etc), whereas the second one does just feel like a "survival horror game, but with ghosts".

Save yourself the trouble and just Zanmato everyone else! Then you can use the time you would have spent on beating them "the right way" by playing something new. I'm of the mind that if the designers put an option in the game, it's not cheating to use it. Definitely. That's what I plan on doing. If I didn't need the Jecht Sphere in Besaid I probably wouldn't bother at all. All I need besides that is to complete Wakka's and Lulu's Celestial weapons. But I really don't want to take the time to do all that.

Started playing The Evil Within. Way to go Mikami, this is legitimately scary and tense at times. I still have no idea what's going on, having only now just reached chap. 5, but the worry that the story won't wrap up without all the questions being answered isn't nearly as big as at was when I saw the trailers. Enemies are just strong enough to be overwhelming when in groups, but weak enough to be handled on their own with some effort. And the ammo drops are sporadic enough where I still feel like I need to conserve my resources. The enemy intelligence is a bit too similar to los ganados and majini of Resi Evil, wish they would've done something more interesting. So far though game feels pretty good.

Having beaten The Evil Within, I think my biggest gripe is it's a bit overlong, it kinda wore out it's welcome for me near the end just a tad (though the last chapter is great, so it ends on a high note), horror is dulled by repetition and there's a reason those survival horror games of yesteryear were usually pretty short and in The Evil Within there's some stretches of the game that definitely feel like filler only added to pad out the length of the game, if only they had trimmed the fat a bit and made it a tighter paced game, oh well, irregardless I'm definitely going to replay it this October. Still, I love just how close to classic survival horror standards the game sticks, while also updating it just enough to still feel modern, I sure hope it gets a sequel someday.

I too would also like to see a sequel to The Evil Within. I agree that certain parts could have perhaps been trimmed out, but as someone who considers Resident Evil 4 just about the best game ever, I'd probably be up for a literally endless trek through Resident Evil 4-esque gameplay sections, that lasted as long as I was willing to keep playing. I hope the DLC turns out well.

I have a bad feeling the bad reviews may have killed it's chances at being a hit, fucking critics are the worst, they're the ones that got survival horror killed in the first place EDIT: ok maybe that's a bit harsh and oversimplifying, but still...

Honestly feel survival horror had a pretty good push last gen. and is at a decent place right now. I remember when the 360, PS3, and Wii were first starting out there were a bunch of survival horror games announced. Not all of them came out, but there was a good number of them that did. Somewhere along the line though, I guess developers got sloppy or maybe it is that too many of them got slammed by critics. There's definitely some kind of a slump at the moment happening. It's okay at the moment with things like Outlast, Daylight, Dreadout, Evil Within, and Alien Isolation. Then you've got things like Nightcry, Until Dawn, Silent Hills, and Routine still on the horizon so there's still a fair amount of things to look forward too. Wouldn't mind a few more games though.

In my opinion there was a stretch there where survival horror was basically dead, things seemed to hit the ground running at first with Condemned: Criminal Origins, but the sequel to that sucked, Silent Hill Homecoming was atrocious, Resident Evil 5 was disappointing and Dead Space 1 and 2, while good games, were certainly "survival horror lite" (have yet to even bother with the third one fyi), honestly the standout from that period just might be Silent Hill Shattered Memories in my opinion, but I think it says a lot that most people would probably consider Amnesia: The Dark Descent to be the scariest game of the era, which is a game I found really, really overrated. It was all capped off with the also terrible Silent Hill Downpour, but thankfully with this new generation survival horror seems to be making a comeback, but I sure wish someone would make another one with fixed camera angles

I haven't heard much of anything about how successful The Evil Within was. I understand some people were disappointed by it because they were expecting something other than what they got, based on previews or something? That's a big part of why I put myself on media blackout for games I know I want to get. As soon as I found out Shinji Mikami was making a new Resident Evil-esque horror game, I knew I wanted it, so I purposefully ignored everything I could about it until it was in my hands, and I think I enjoyed the game much more than I otherwise would have if I had spoiled large parts of it for myself. Personally, I'm much more interested in a sequel to The Evil Within than I would be in another Resident Evil sequel. Although I kind of remember reading awhile that Shinji Mikami was going to not direct any more games? I wish I could remember where I read that a few years ago, but I was really disappointed when I heard that.

It's strange, but except for the original live-action trailer and Mikami's name I had very little interest in this despite being a big survival horror fan. It just seemed kinda meh compared to all the other offerings. I'm glad I was wrong because the game really does capture that something the original Resi Evil had.
Also, have to agree about fixed camera angles. Unless I'm using the Wiimote or PS Move, the 3rd person camera angles Resi Evil 4 & 5, Dead Space, and Evil Within share don't seem accurate enough. It seems like I'm missing for the sake of missing. Maybe I'll go back into my backlog after this. Try out something like a good run of Resi Evil 3 or Martian Gothic.

The thing I love about fixed camera angles in those old survival horror games is how much they enhance the atmosphere, they create a very cinematic feel that you just don't get from typical third person camera controls. Plus it seems that having to only render environments from fixed positions allows developers to really boost graphical detail.

I have no idea why The Evil Within seems so reviled. Amazon.co.jp and Steam reviews are mixed at best, and the game quickly got discounted on Steam.
