The framerate was VERY junky on launch though this was quickly patched on PC and, honestly, the game is fairly difficult if you don't pick up on how to play it. However, it apparently sold pretty well.

True; Survival difficulty in The Evil Within makes Professional difficulty in Resident Evil 4 look like a piece of cake. I am sad the game isn't getting a better reception though. It's one of the most intense games I've played in a good long while, and I find its level design/enemy encounters really engaging, even if a lot of them seem based on ones from Resident Evil 4. It's not like other games haven't done the same sort of thing though; hmph

I have no idea why The Evil Within seems so reviled. Amazon.co.jp and Steam reviews are mixed at best, and the game quickly got discounted on Steam. I can only assume it's because most gamers today really have no clue what it is they fucking want, they'll complain about games being too easy and "casual" and along comes a game like The Evil Within and yet it's still not good enough.

A weird thought occurs as I play Wolfenstein 3D for the first time I can remember...
This is basically the more-Western take on the first-person dungeon crawler, no? Some of the basic principles are the same, even if the gameplay is different. You're still crawling around a dungeon in first-person (duh,) and you're still looking for the exit to a level, foraging for items on the side at the expense of a potential enemy encounter...
The main differences actually add to the point of it being more Western. No multiple endings, just a straight-shoot. No extra statistics like Luck or Magic, just completely streamlined into its bare essentials. Not turn-based, instead live-action. No swords or magic - in its place lots of projectiles.
I don't know why, but this is blowing my mind...

I can only assume it's because most gamers today really have no clue what it is they fucking want, they'll complain about games being too easy and "casual" and along comes a game like The Evil Within and yet it's still not good enough. From the bits I played, it is somewhat frustrating experience, but in a good way. I think that's something most reviewers miss - horror games by nature should involve frustration to a certain degree. It is supposed to be a disheartening experience. Otherwise, still plucking away at Fatal Frame 3 myself. I'm pretty close to the end. I think the major complaint about this one is about the amount of backtracking you have to do, which I don't mind, because the design has a good onion-like structure: you keep peeling the layers to find new stuff in old environments. However, I'm at a fetch mission right now which is essentially EXACTLY the same as a one few chapters ago almost, which is somewhat disappointing. Except of course now they introduced that dreadful thing you have to keep track of, which increases the anxiety levels quite a bit. Also playing Demon's Souls, and loving it. Probably half-way in, but I keep being astonished by the level design. There is always a deep sense of wonder, and I love how structurally it all makes sense, and that you often can see places in the beginning that you later reach, and as you explore the level, you get a fuller appreciation of a particular environment. It hasn't been that much difficult either, but I like how it rewards planning and observing. All in all, it's probably one of the best games I've played, really.

We originally created the General Game Chat Thread expecting that this kind of discussion would move over there so the other threads would get phased out and unclutter the first page of this subforum. That's not what happened, and instead the page got even more cluttered, so we're finally discontinuing these. Please use the official stickied General Game Chat Thread for this kind of talk from now on: hg101.proboards.com/thread/10256/general-game-chat-thread
