So is Metal Slug basically like Contra but slower? I haven't played any of them. Motion's a bit more start-and-stop, IMO. It may just be an aesthetic trick, but Contra tends to feel more like you're moving more often, mowing things down. Metal Slug feels more, "run, then shoot" than "run and shoot".

MS3 is a personal favorite (after X, personally) because it has the most interesting level gimmicks. You go straight from fighting giant crustaceans, to zombies (which I feel is much better executed than the mummy stuff in 2/X, since the grenade attack as a zombie is really awesomely overpowered), to alien monoliths, to a bizarre almost-tribal recreation of the Japanese army from the second World War, and to the longest and most satisfying Final Mission in the series that just keeps escalating the stakes until you're fighting the final boss in a freefall while it's got your Slug in a chokehold.
It might not quite be the best in the series (I find X is better balanced and isn't as reliant on the gimmicks as 3), but Metal Slug 3 is certainly the most memorable, due to the insane spectacle it puts on.

Eh, I've always preferred Contra over Metal Slug, to be honest. Contra's difficult, sure, very difficult. But at least for the most part, you feel like there's actual patterns to learn and you're actually getting better over time. With Metal Slug, they just don't give a shit, and they're going to milk you of every credit you've got until you bleed. It's an arcade game, I know, but that's still bad design.

Metal Slug 3 is an amazing game. I love everything about it. The branching levels, set pieces, sprite design, slower pace, difficulty curve, even the bosses which can take forever to defeat soemtimes. It's one of my favorite games.
That's not to say that the other Metal Slugs are bad, though. 1 and 2/X are still good and both bring soemthing different to the table (1 being streamlined gameplay and lower difficulty, 2/X being a focus on wackier levels and fun new weapons).
I wouldn't say that all Metal Slugs are the same, but they can feel a bit similar. 4 and 5 are not bad games, but they lack the same polish as the first three and tend to blend together for me. I haven't tried any of the other games yet.

What a great way to start your stint on the board and endear yourself to the established members. Many people like Metal Slug 3 better than the previous titles because it's bigger, has branching paths, and has very creative level design. Many of those same people also perceive a drop in quality and polish after that game, and while some of the later games have been more successful than others, many people think they still haven't managed to top Metal Slug 3. What's so difficult to understand about that? It's perfectly fine for someone to prefer a different Metal Slug or to even like them all equally, but it's also perfectly fine if someone does indeed like Metal Slug 3 best. It's nothing to get all indignant about.

I also prefer Contra, but Metal Slug is still a great series.
3 isn't my favorite, but it's totally understandable that it would be the favorite of many. For one thing it has far more multiple paths to explore per level than any other game in the series, which allows for a huge amount of replay value. The game also has a ton of variety with regards to both its actual level design, and the level themes it incorporates. The sheer spectacle it offers is among the best you can find in 2D sidescrollers. Just because it features the same gameplay mechanics as every other Metal Slug game, that doesn't mean all the games are the same, and thus not worth distinguishing between.

They're not all that bad. The midboss on level 3 in the first Metal Slug was pretty much the hardest part of trying to 1LC/1CC the game for me. Never tried doing that with 2 or X, but I sunk a lot of time into learning 3 as much as I could. Loved the PS2/Xbox port of that game. Didn't spend much time trying to learn 4 or 5 and my only exposure to 6 was via the compilation with the sweet emulation but crummy load times. That game was pretty neat. Never touched 7 or XX. Sounds like they might be worth looking at. Played the first Neo Geo Pocket Color game for a little bit and thought it wasn't very fun. My usual method for approaching the games (one emulation was a viable solution) was to credit feed my way through, then create save states in MAME at different points in each stage so I could practice them over and over until I could string it along as much as possible unassisted. Pretty invaluable training tool, though I know some people frown on practicing in that way (SAVE STATES ARE THE DEVIL). They drastically improved my GigaWing performance over the course of a week, which led to some pretty bitchin' sessions at the local arcade. I think the slowdown in 2 was too off-putting for me and X's relation to 2 is what kept me from better appreciating it. Honestly, at this point I'm not likely to ever really give either one a fair shake again. I'd rather invest more time into 6 or explore 7 and XX based on this thread. It's kind of hard to get any worthwhile information about the series out in the wild due to a mixture of fanbase fragmentation (ANYTHING AFTER 3 IS SHITSU) and general retro megahype (OMG METAL SLUG IS THE BESTEST LOOK PIXELS HOLY SHIT RETRO I'M COOL). ...so while this thread started off letting us know that we're bottom feeding shit eaters, I'm pretty appreciative of the input y'all provided! I just wish I had someone local to practice these games with, because I would loooooooove to get a solid co op run in.
