I'm pretty sure they're the ones doing the porting and just don't handle overseas releases themselves which is common. They have said in interviews that sales of Ys VIII on Switch did make them rethink things (again outside of Japan) although I can't find one at the moment. Ys IX getting a simultaneous western release across all platforms is a big sign of that change. Long term, the constant pushing of the high end is not doing any favors to anyone without gigantic piles of money. Even for the Switch, the desire to have SMT V be full 3D has clearly been causing Atlus problems since there's been barely a peep for 3 and half years apart from assurances that it's still in development. I'm not going to do something like predict some kind of giant realignment, but many publishers were clearly caught flatfooted by the success the Switch especially ones burned by the Wii U. Like with the DS and 3DS during the previous shifts, it's going to be an attractive platform for titles that might not be able to pull the numbers required for a big budget PS5/XBX game. A good example of this is how all the non-Persona SMT games post-PS2 have been on Nintendo platforms along with the more niche Persona Qs. In Falcom's case, there's only so much greater and greater hardware really helps them for their general graphical style. It's going to be an attractive platform for them since it has been a success so far especially once there's a "Switch 2" that shrinks the "practical" performance gap even if the potential gap gets bigger. Whilst it makes sense for these AA style releases to come to Nintendo, Atlus and Falcom in particular are slow to adapt. Yeah, I remember seeing that interview, but I'll believe it when I see it. Perhaps it's more a case of working more closely with Nippon Ichi who've handled the Japanese Switch games so far? It really does go against good business sense to not go multiplatform in these days, especially when Nintendo is much more supportive in marketing middle ranged games. Sony just ignores them completely, and Microsoft has no audience in Japan. Personally though, as long as I,can play Ys games on Switch I'm happy. Hopefully IX is a good conversion. Edit: I don't know that it's time to be too concerned about SMTV just yet. I believe it was only in preproduction when it was announced.

With Falcom, I want it to be true. They have been very slow to adapt considering they basically ignored Nintendo platforms for the longest time aside from that DS port of Ys Book 1 and 2 along with that inexplicable 3DS port of Gurumin.
Atlus has been pretty good overall I think. They didn't really embrace the home console side all that much with just the three Trauma Center games on Wii, but they've been good on portables even though it is heavy on SMT and Etrian Odyssey with a few other things mixed in. At least for games that are "theirs" as opposed to simply being the publisher, they've given more support to Nintendo by number of titles although not by total sales just because Persona sells so well. I wouldn't be surprised if the other stuff was more inline with each other.

But I think Falcom will have a hard time making money on PS5 eventually. Unless I'm really underestimating how much the Ys games sell in the west. Yeah, Atlus are a good supporter of every platform really, they're just a small group and take a long time to deliver their games after announcing them. Persona 5 being a ps3 game in 2016 for example and the general low number of HD games they've developed full stop. Also their strategy for exclusivity is very old school, with many games kept as console exclusives. Didn't they also say they were doing a new Etrian Odyssey a while back? I'd be curious to see how they handle that.

I think they've made vague statements but nothing concrete regarding EO. I meant to post about it, but in Sega/Atlus's survey from a few weeks ago, EO was one of the series they asked extensively about.

Anyone playing Last of Us 2? Was going to wait until the price dropped but gave into the hype and really wish I didn't. I played it for a good few hours on Sunday and have bounced off it and back to FF13-2 which I'm just having way more fun with. I'm just a bit sick of these big budget games trying hard to be a TV series or movie with the gameplay interrupting the game. It's just a slog to get to the next (pretty great in fairness) set piece when the writing really isn't all the great.
As for SMTV, Atlus always take ages to make games. I was waiting a long time for SMTIV. With the Persona 5 engine being what looks like a disaster, I'm pretty sure that Atlus will be building an Unreal engine framework for SMTV that can be repurposed for future games and updating the 3D models of the demon roster so they can be repurposed in other games like they did after Nocturne.

Japan is also getting the original SMT in their next allotment of NSO games. I find it a little strange that Atlus would go so far as to make an iOS exclusive English version but both leave it to rot leading to delisting and never port it anywhere else. Maybe they're holding it back until SMT V is closer to release?

Or else is sold so poorly they haven't touched it. Pity, as would love localised versions of 2 and if...

Didn't know they existed. Did they keep the religious symbolism in? Is that something that would keep them from consoles nowadays?
So the only way to play them in English on consoles is the translation hacks then? Are they a good way to play? I did try one of them out a number of years back and found it pretty obtuse. I don't know whether it's down to the translation or the game itself.

Not to get into a big thing as sometimes happens when these things come up, but consoles mainly just rely on the local ratings board these days. The last time I remember Nintendo itself having some kind of problem (as opposed to a publisher making changes without being asked) was with The Binding of Isaac on 3DS, but they did eventually relent. They've been extremely hands off these days.
I didn't play through the iOS version of SMT all the way, but it wasn't cut. There was a version of SMT II, but that was never translated and if... was never ported. I feel like it was a little bit of a test that failed before they pivoted to gatcha instead with Dx2 Liberation. So the translation patches are the only option.
