Dread look just a liiiiittle bit bland to me, graphically. I’m also not sold on the robot motif.... But at least the counter move seems vastly improved. It became very old very quickly in Samus Returns. Now it looks smooth and less like a defensive-only move.
MercurySteam has made a few alright games (and some very questionable ones) but never a truly great one IMO. Perhaps this has a chance!

So I subscribed to this Youtube channel, Atrocity Guide. It's another of those channels about strange stuff and mysterious happenings, not in the paranormal sense but about stuff like ARGs, cults, viral marketing and internet oddities. It doesn't upload much but because all videos are mini-documentaries that are well-researched and interesting. The one I want to show you is about "bob's game", a vaporware that never really came out (or did it?) made by a lone developer ever since the mid-2000s or so. I vaguely remembered about it but I didn't know the backstory. And after doing I felt kinda sad (not too much though) because this dev could have actually done something with his ambitious project, were he not so entrenched in his obsessions and warped ego.
In the end it seems that those lone developers that manage to make games all by themselves are either solitary humble people like Daisuke Amaya/Pixel, Toby Fox, Laura Shigihara and "Housekeeping", or arrogant egotistical nutjobs like Phil Fish, "YandereDev" or "Bob" here. Is there even a middle road?

Very few supposedly lone developers are actually lone top to bottom excluding testing i.e. design, programming, writing, art, sound and music. Pixel is one depending on the game as was Thomas Happ with Axiom Verge. Toby Fox definitely wasn't completely. I'm not familiar with Laura Shigihara but Rakuen looks like it was somewhat of a team effort. The egotistical ones are that way because they're taking credit for other people's work!

Well this was a surprise...
I've never played a Cruis'n game before and I thought this looked pretty fun. I'm not sure what to expect, but I don't have a single racing game on Switch so far and have been looking for one. I wonder if it's worth taking a chance on this. ---- A few other late notes from the Direct: SMTV got a different trailer in Japan. I prefer it personally: Advance Wars is being developed by WayForward. Boy, that announcement was a rollercoaster though after the initial excitement, then not feeling the visuals and after that digital only (edit: I may be wrong about this going by Nintendo's UK store). What a shame. I don't mind digital only games in some cases but not when charging full retail prices. Fatal Frame V is coming to all platforms (still digital only btw, sorry America). I'm curious what happened here since Nintendo invested in the development of the game previously. Was there a limited exclusivity clause or did Koei Tecmo buy back the rights or something? I'm guessing we'll never hear about it since something similar happened with The Wonderful 101 with no explanation previously. I'm also interested in the Danganronpa collection. I have played the first and really enjoyed it (is that allowed for me to say or did I just lose all credibility). I'm wondering if the collection is coming to Europe or is it just US?

Advance Wars is physical. Getting backlash for the price but that is $30 per entry they are remaking. Wayforward games are not cheap.
I don't mind the graphics. Looked at Treehouse gameplay and I can see the effort into it. Nice clean work and the profiles animate. Never played the games is that like the original? Looking like Advance Wars in 3D to me. Maybe a little of Battalion Wars too.

Here's a little Behind the Scenes thing...
Metroid Dread lookin' good! I'm liking how fast paced and brisk the action is. I do hope they mix up some more environments beyond the mechanical base. After seeing the 35th Zelda Game and Watch announcement, here's to hoping they get around to making a Metroid one too. Maybe a Gunpei Yokoi Game & Watch Edition, with Metroid and Kid Icarus.

I never thought we would ever actually see a game titled Metroid Dread. Samus Returns wasn't my favorite, but I have confidence that with some experience and without the limitations of being a Metroid II remake this could be great. Hopefully with those E.M.M.I. robots the series can regain some of that foreboding atmoshpere that the first game had. Nice surprise that it's launching so soon too. Pretty good showing for Nintendo overall. Not a lot of time wasted on previously announced titles and not really any cringey third party trailers either (well, Just Dance I guess). The look at BotW2 was pretty brief, so I'm thinking 2022 means either late 2022 or whoops it's going to be 2023 after all. I'm glad they're going for a very distinct setting, so it looks good to me. Mario Party Superstars could be a fun multiplayer purchase. Only 5 boards is a bit lame, but the large focus on the N64 era should be good. MP3 still has the best formula and I don't mind having returning minigames. This is what Mario Party The Top 100 should have been. Shin Megami Tensei V looks awesome. Never played any game in that series, so I don't know that much about how this stacks up to other entries, but I'm excited to make this my first experience with the franchise. That Japanese trailer indeed looks a lot cooler, excelsior. I guess they assume westerners aren't that familiar with the franchise yet. Tekken in Smash was kind of expected. I know so little about Tekken that I conflated this guy and the guy with two-pronged hair. No idea why he's throwing everyone from a cliff either... Only thing I was kind of dissapointed in was WarioWare. I think a regular home-console multiplayer focused game like Mega Party Games would've been better (or hell, even a remake of that game).

I hope they keep it up. Maybe as the tech advances they will move on to a Game Boy classic of some kind. No idea why he's throwing everyone from a cliff either... Apparently, that's just his thing in the games.

After seeing the 35th Zelda Game and Watch announcement, here's to hoping they get around to making a Metroid one too. Maybe a Gunpei Yokoi Game & Watch Edition, with Metroid and Kid Icarus. The future of the Metroid series hasn't looked this bright in some time. Prime is in development, Mercury Steam seemingly being locked down as the ongoing developer for the 2D series (nice to hear that future entries will move beyond the need to include the actual Metroid's as a threat. I know that's been a story stumbling block), and heck, the 35th anniversary even got an acknowledgement. A Metroid G&W system though??? Let's not push our luck. I'd say a more likely recipient is Donkey Kong. The big ape turns 40 this year, and he had a great presence in the Game & Watch line. At this point DK is getting less love than Samus even as a much more significant piece of history for Nintendo. Though going off on a tangent I could also envisage a DK '40' (Tetris 99 styled game). ZenithianHero - thanks for clarification on Advance Wars being physical. I really find the lack of clarity on release format these days quite aggravating. You'd have thought publishers would be more keen to detail how to buy the games they showcase in Direct's but it seems to not be the case. On price complaints, it's something I see more and more these days especially from one specific community of so-called enthusiasts. One of the things I find to be a prerequisite to being a hobbyist is being willing to pay for the things I want, at least within reason. In my experience the alternative isn't a cheaper priced release but certain types of games disappearing outright. I find 'fans' who appear to be in favour of the race to the bottom is one of my biggest industry pet peeve's nowadays.

Value is a reasonable concern, but it's totally unwarranted in the case of Advance Wars 1+2. That's going to be at least 40 hours of content without touching any of the extras. I think the sort of psychological pricing that traditional retail has always used has seeped into game sales too much and people are balking at prices that are totally reasonable for what you're actually getting. I saw similar things about Metroid Dread, but that's a lot more labor intensive per hour of content.
