So, random life thing - I retired. Or I'm treating it that way for now anyway, it may turn into a 'career' (very loose usage of that term) break if circumstances change. Anyway, though of course I need to try and keep a nice balance in life one thing I really want to tackle is that darn backlog. Anyway, because I'm also sad I decided I would track it over time. So I've gone through all my games, determined what I had some interest in trying or playing through and I decided I will sell off any others. I've gone through them on How Long to Beat and taken the main + extra time for each game since I thought that was a realistic average representation and totted them all up. I've worked out I have 244 games at 4007 hours. I think that seems pretty doable over the long term? I guess it depends on if I can control my spending. I think I will start by targeting the biggest time offenders - those bloody JRPG's (and strategy RPG's too, but for some reason I take forever to get through those). I have games I've owned nearly 2 decades in there so it would be satisfying to actually have played them. I will try not to overboard in how much time I spend though. Is it realistic a target? I'm not sure. We'll see I guess.
Specifically I started chipping away at Phantasy Star Online (not so much). It has a time of 86 hours on there. I'm kind of hoping it is much shorter than that though since so far it is pretty much just a grind. I had read quite a few people online saying it's still a great game offline, however it seems very basic. Hopefully it will improve.

What I'm doing is a JRPG with some short NES games, taking a break with some decent sized action games then going to a RPG.
You will get burned out at points. Take a break, catch up on films and TV shows and get back into it when you have the urge to go back.

Something I been doing for a number of years is watching Youtube videos of only boss battles in video games. There's two channels I've watched, Shadowserg or also called Castle of Dracula (must be a big Castlevania fan,) and Final Boss Games. One thing I wonder is how they are able to produce so many video in a short amount of time. FBG used to have hundreds of videos (they seemed to lost all of them but are putting them up at an incredible rate.) and Shadowserg has video put up every few days. Shadowserg videos are all or mostly done with boss battles with no damage to the player which in itself is quite amazing. I wonder how they pull it off as some of the games are really hard. Unless their cheating or are some kind of video game god. Thing is I'd like to start watching all the videos of these channels from the very beginning of when they started being posted years ago but I'm unable to figure it out. I found out that there a "Sort By" button to click on that one can select some ways of watching the videos and one of the selections is "Date added (oldest)" which is good but it doesn't let me use a "Play all" button like some of the other selections do. I read that when Google bought Youtube they removed a Reverse button feature on the site. There's got to be some way to watch these video one after another from the beginning. I like to add them to a playlist. It's a pain to do but I've one for the AGDQ speed run events and Chrontendo.

I do hope the retirement was primarily your choice and that it's all for the better in the long run.
For me it's kind of the opposite situation: After a hiatus I really need to resume working on a long overdue thesis (aka: my final boss battle). Which means less games, less heated discussions about nostalgia, less bad cover art and overall less distractions for me, I'm afraid.
Anyway, good luck on your future projects and on your backlog tackling!

Games can help Thesis writing. I credut Valkyria Chronicles 2 for keeping me sane during my Thesis write up. I spent about 9 months writing up and finishing off the last few experiments. I'd be in college at 11 and would leave late, usually when security caught me there after hours and threw me out. I'd go home play a bit of Valkyria Chronicles 2 before bed. Rinse and repeat.

Thanks Wataraman! As far as choice goes I feel it was a little from column A and a little from column B. I've been able to decide to take that action now since voluntary redundancy was on the table, and at a chosen time that it had become an affordable option. The main catalyst though was simply due to having declining health over the last decade and being in constant pain has just become too much. Anyway, I hope I will be able to show enough recovery to eventually revaluate with time to rest and treatment, but for now at least I need to focus on my health. I completely get what you say about distractions. Sometimes there's a need to just shut ourselves off from the world in order to get things done. I was lucky in my chosen path never required a university degree (just a shedload of exams). I will say though I think that's only doable over a short term, and there is need to take breaks. Don't become all work no play windfisch please. Also, for selfish reasons, I will hope you do not disappear entirely, although extended absences may be a requirement. But same to you, good luck with it and I'm sure you'll come out the other side with great success. retr0gamer - I agree about burnout and the need to shift between game styles (and of course take breaks for other hobbies, TV, film etc - though I'm not finding any shows to watch lately). A nice action game can really compliment long RPG. Last year I had an extended RPG burnout after playing Ni No Kuni. On an evaluation though, I realised that was purely symptomatic of playing Ni No Kuni. It was a bit of a slog. ________ So this morning I invited myself to my brothers for a couple of hours game time. Successfully sold him on New Pokemon Snap (as I should have all of you by this point) and had a nice time with a couple other games. First we had a go at Streets of Rage 4, and I have to say I really liked it. I've seen mixed opinions on the game, but to me it was pure SoR and the soundtrack was just fab. I also got my hands on the PS5, specifically Astro Bot. I was kind of blown away by the controller. The rumble when mixed with sound coming from the controller has a real feeling of immersion. It kind of took me away, making me really feel the change in environments (walking in sand, rustling through bushes etc). It was something else. The adaptive triggers also - this was a term I'd heard thrown around and had no context to what it meant. Essentially the triggers are able to lock themselves in place somewhere, giving the feeling of the Gamecube 'click' at times and being soft and spongy other times dependent on what's happening in the game. In Astro Bot you become a spring and it really feels like you're springing the trigger along with the character. It's a really wonderful device. I wonder how frequently it will be used in combination with games that feel as joyous and playful as Astro Bot though. I didn't need selling on a PS5 right now, there's enough coming up. However, I am tempted for the first time.

retr0gamer Maybe I'll allow myself a little gaming, but only as a reward after a hard day's work. Though I prefer shorter games for that purpose. Thanks for the kind words! I wish you lots of positivity, support and strenght to change whatever can be changed in your life to better suit your needs!
Anyway, Wataraman must go now, bye kids!

I'm jealous! I've been thinking of getting an AV Famicom, or even a top loader NES. Well what's stopping you? Focusing on the NES/FC the last couple of months has honestly been the most fun I've had with the collecting aspect of gaming. As for Rockman/Megaman NES prices, I guess for the American prices it's the more rare, the more expensive (I assume the first three got the largest runs back in the day), whereas on the FC it's the more desirable ones (so, the earlier ones) that are more expensive or something. But that might be complete bullshit. Though RM6 doesn't follow that pattern, so I guess that game is just relatively rare because it came so late in the system's life. What I'm doing is a JRPG with some short NES games, taking a break with some decent sized action games then going to a RPG. This is more or less what I intend to do generally, having one big boy I'm tackling, and a couple of smaller games thrown in. It pretty much never goes like that in practice. Good luck...every gamer has the dream of being the first person to successfully go through their backlog. But I wonder if we will ever see it happen in my lifetime... I blame the publishers. Every time I complete a game I find they have released 3 more that I clearly have no alternative but to pick up. It isn't just from one publisher though, it is liked they have teamed up and are conspiring. There is no respect for the backlog elimination process. ______________ So I notice that a demo for The World Ends With You Neo is coming tomorrow and like with all marketing for this game it was unveiled in the most understated way. I find it really odd that Square Enix has made so little effort to create excitement for this release. There has been no presence in a major presentation such as E3 or Nintendo Direct etc. It is as though there is no confidence in the product, which leaves me wondering why they developed it in the first place. I mean, it's a sequel to a cult DS game from 14 years ago that failed to sell with multiple chances. Even as someone who did play and greatly enjoy the original I'm really not feeling it. Maybe the demo will do its job, but it seems a bit too little too late and that this game is being sent out to die. I would like to be wrong.

There is an Anime airing for ‘The World Ends With You’ right now. Watch the anime and pick up the sequel game. I’m sure there are more adverts for the game in Japan.
Maybe they are counting on Kingdom Hearts buzz over here. Joking.

Some Trails goodness leaked on the Epic Games Store: Whoa whoa whoa. Missed this. Awesome! That’s like all the Trails games localized. Getting the Crossbell series is great! Hopefully they announce the PS versions tonight. Not really interested in Reverie as it is mostly Cold Steel V…but hopefully going forward all Legend of Heroes games will be localized. Hopefully they sneak the new one in there too.

Yow! I knew that level 5-1 in SMB3 changed between the US and Japanese versions due to a weird bug, but all this time I think it escaped me that the bug could be used to produce a fourth warp whistle! (And since it's in World 5, you can in theory keep finishing worlds 5 and 6 over and over again in an endless loop.) Did anyone else know about this? (The comments suggest it is kind of difficult to get consistently.)
