Other thoughts on the Direct: Kirby x The Last of Us looks neat This is what my brother texted me during the direct and I was going to ask if you were him, but then I saw your thoughts on Monster Hunter and realised you couldn't possibly be. spanky - which Mr Driller is it? Those games are not conductive to backlog progress. Just super addictive.

Finally beat Contra 3 on hard mode. I enjoyed it but the overhead stages are still really weak. I like how the subtle changes in hard mode make it a very different game. I also picked up the Actraiser remake. It's definitely a remake not a remaster with level layouts and enemies changed and the game plays a little differently (I'd say better). One thing that really stood out is that the visuals are entirely pre-rendered DKC style. I normally hate this style but it's been so long since I've seen it that it looks really.... quaint. I kind of love how it looks. Sin & Punishment had a translated Wii/U VC release so not that surprising. Not really concerned about the three button vs six button Genesis pad. Not that many games really made good use of it outside fighting games, and I have my doubts that most of those will be added. Plus, the best exclusive is Virtua Fighter for 32X and that doesn't need it or use it well. I find the 3 button pad horrible. The 6 button pad on the other hand is very close to the saturn 6 button pad and is therefore the second best gamepad ever made. This statement is backed up by scientific fact.

There's no question that the six button pad is better, but I don't think the lack of it outside Japan is really going to hold back releases.

I have a weird bias against the Genesis controller because I always associate it with pizza grease. I never had Genesis as a kid, but my neighbor did. He was this really overweight kid and was pretty much allowed to have everything he wanted because his parents were divorcing. So he'd sit in his room literally all day and eat nothing but pizza rolls. Whenever I'd come over, he'd hand me the controller it would be greasy and slippery. Not only that, we have a regional chain of pizza places around here called Pizza King. A few of the PKs in my area did a new concept where the seating of the restaurant was set up to resemble train cars. Your drinks would actually be delivered by a model train. Each booth had a coin operated TV and a Genesis (earlier Master System, later Saturns and PS1s) built in. The controllers were bolted to the table and without fail would be covered in grease and pizza gunk! Still it was a really cool concept for a restaurant. It was the first place I ever played Gunstar Heroes. Some of the train themed restaurants are still around but the last one I went to was in horrible disrepair. Here is what they looked like when I was a kid.
excelsior - Driller Land, I think. It was on sale (marked down like 75%). I haven't played a Mr. Driller game since...the PS1 I think. I really enjoyed it at the time so I thought I'd give the series another go.

I'm so sorry everybody, I made a huge mistake in my previous post: As we all know Zool is the interdimensional Ninja. The title of "intergalactic Ninja" belongs to Zen, duh!
I mean, they're so easy to tell apart. Spot the difference?
Answer: Zen is the one who isn't afraid to go down on others - such a well-mannered lad.
(Yeah, I've got issues.)
edit:
Also, since the Zool remaster doesn't feature Chupa Chups product placement anymore it *ahem* sucks considerably less.

And I haven't even gotten to Snap!'s Rhythm is a Dancer yet. Or how about 2 Unlimited:
Ahh, good old Europe!

I remember loving 2unlimited and thinking they would be awesome as a game soundtrack. When I saw a review of biometal on an Irish videogame show I thought to myself 'finally!'.
What to take away from this event? Kids are idiots.

Nah, if anything you were a pretty smart kid, ahead of your time even.
These days I would never listen to their music - at least not without a heavy dose of irony and/or substance abuse involved. But as a game soundtrack for a sidescrolling shooter? I think as such it still works for me.

I have a weird bias against the Genesis controller because I always associate it with pizza grease. This is gross - but I enjoyed the anecdote. --- A couple of things - since the subject of video game TV shows was brought up UK based show Games Master will be coming back later this year. That show was always a bit trippy in my opinion but it will be interesting to see what it looks like in a modern age. The other news piece I thought was kind of a big deal is that Rune Factory 5's western release will add same sex relationships and marriage for the first time in the series. I tried this series for the first time on Wii, only really knowing it was a farming sim. When I discovered the dating aspect to that game I was quickly disappointed to discover that it only applied to intergender relationships which lead me to stop playing. Now, unfortunately the Japanese release was plagued by poor performance and complaints of an empty town when it came out. We'll have to see if those issues have been addressed when it comes out worldwide, but now I can at least consider buying the game as an option. Here's the full trailer:

It's so bizarre that Legends Arceus is set in an ancient era where they're using steam-powered Pokéballs but they still had to give the player a phone. Is it really that necessary to have an in-universe justification for menus?

I was hoping to put this in the Game Finish Challenge thread, but I played Beavis and Butthead (Genesis) yesterday and the game just completely beat me. Why did I want to play this? I've been watching the King Turd (the bootleg "complete" release of the series) collection and I guess I have the show on the brain.
This was part of a trilogy of B&B games released in late 1994 and it was from an era when a licensed property would be released on multiple systems and each system would have it's unique game. The SNES and Game Gear versions were average platformers but the Genesis one is a bit more interesting - it's an adventure game with some action elements. You might have some reservations once you learn this was made by Radical Entertainment who made uh...the NES version of Mario's Time Machine and Rocky & Bullwinkle. It's quite a bit better than those games at least.
The plot is B&B get ahold of some tickets for a GWAR concert but Mr. Anderon's dog steals the tickets, eats them, barfs them up, then Anderson runs over what's left of them with his mower, scattering them to the winds. The goal is to recover the individual ticket pieces so you can reassemble your tickets. The game world is open but you select the areas you wish to visit using your TV remote. The puzzles are your typical obtuse adventure game puzzles mixed with the sort of pranks and destruction the characters are known for - many of them taken straight from the early seasons of the show. For example, if you go to Burger World, you'll see an angry customer demanding service. So what do you do? You get a dead rat from the dumpster, then some fries from the kitchen, fry them together and feed them to the guy. He gives you some money and pukes up a piece of the ticket. Why did he have a piece of ticket in his stomach? Who knows.
The action elements I mentioned bog down the game quite a bit. The combat isn't fun - enemies take a bunch of hits and don't have any AI aside from "move forward and hit you" and due to the large character sprites, obstacles come screaming off screen before you can react. The weapons are either your own flatulence or goofy toys like dart guns which seems tonally off from the series but whatever. There's one extended action platforming sequence through a sewer then a junkyard (then you have to go back the same way you came) that is a huge pain. The mandatory couch fishing mini game also requires some incredibly fast mashing - I don't think I've ever pulled it off without a turbo controller. Don't get me started on the hospital scooter race.
Aesthetically, the game does hold up very well. The sprites are large, detailed and well animated. The backgrounds are spartan in places but do a good job portraying what a desolate west Texas hellhole that Highland is supposed to be. There are tons of scratchy voices and the soundtrack is appropriately grungy sounding. I like it quite a bit actually.
I have memories of playing this game quite a bit when I was much younger and even beating it with a friend. So how did it beat me now? First of all, I had to save scum my way through a few parts because there are more than a few instant death traps and the game does not have a continue feature - the only way to continue is to enter your last password, which is a bit of a pain and I just don't have the patience for that nowadays. Secondly, it is possible to get the game into an unwinnable state. There's a only a few ways to make money in the game and there are only a few things you can spend money on. However, if buy items from the Toy Shop (weapons, basically) before going to the drive-in movie theater, then you may not have enough money to get through the gate, rendering you stuck. Well, this is what exactly happened to me.
Despite all this, I actually like the game and it's probably the second best Beavis and Butthead game next to Virtual Stupidity. There's a level of care and detail here, from the password screen which gives you fake exam questions, to all the references to events in the show, to the secret ending. It's quite rough around the edges but that's really the worst thing I can say about it.
Speaking of Virtual Stupidity, it's really excellent - it's a proper point and click adventure game. It's pretty easy to find for free online.

I'd love to see more surprise PS1 era remakes of deep cut games.
Also FF7 Remake for PC for the love of god.
