So Five Nights at Freddy's is the "in" thing right now in horror and among Youtubers... well, since it came out on Steam three days ago, anyway. Five Nights at Freddy's on SteamDon't watch the following if you don't want the experience to be spoiled, obviously. So I didn't listen to my own advice and watched the whole thing. Even watching someone else play was pretty scary... almost glad I didn't play it. Like most Youtube-friendly horror games, it relies a lot on jump scares, but this one still looks like the top of the crop. I love the insane logic and originality of the game: you're paid 120$ a week to babysit animatronics for children that are totally not out to kill you, because it's cheaper to hire a night watchman than to repair them (that's what this economy has become!) You also have a quota of power to use the lights/security camera and to maintain security shutters closed (budgets y'know). It's probably not a good idea to run out of power... It's a smart use of the jump scare: the antsier you become, the more power you use, the more likely you are to die. Brilliant.

I honestly couldn't watch more than a Let's Play that covered the first two nights and lost when Foxy stormed in. I'm sure like any horror game you just get used to it, but damn if the combination of difficulty and paranoia don't make for an intense experience.

Mechanically it has some neat ideas: switching through security camera to keep track of various threats while managing a limited resource needed to defend yourself. That's cool.
Not really feeling the monster design, setting, and lack of variety though. Makes the game kind of feel like an oversized jack-in-the-box... you're locked in a room while the crank turns and the music plays to build anticipation, then the clown pops out and goes "booga booga booga" and the game ends.

Oh man, speak of the devil! KaL gifted me the game last night, so I figure I might as well stream myself doing a blind-ish run of the game. Edit:Stream should go live ~11:30 PM EST.

Unfortunately Livestream is being a huge piece of ass, so I'll stream again on Friday!

I never really play horror games, but I'm planning to buy this if only because I have a massive obsession with animatronics.
It'd be cool if this game stirred up more interest in the history of Showbiz Pizza/Chuck E. Cheese. I'd love to see more people checking out The Rock-afire Explosion. It's one of my very favorite documentaries.

It's one of my very favorite documentaries. I miss Showbiz. They had legitimately good arcades; after the switch to Suck-E-Cheese it all went downhill. As for those types of games, I'm not a fan of the "defenseless" horror genre that's all the rage these days. I was telling Rasa on the chat that it's bad enough being terrified and helpless at your job and in real life, I don't know why people want to feel that way in their games too .

Honestly, I think a mix of good voice acting and self-awareness make the real things a lot more endearing in context.

As a jaded horror gamer I keep hoping to find a game I can get into. Amnesia really didn't do it for me but I'm hopeful about this one. I don't want anything spoiled. Can anyone who's played this give an honest recommendation?

Like most Youtube-friendly horror games, it relies a lot on jump scares, but this one still looks like the top of the crop. Really, the most brilliant part of it is that you know it's coming, you just never know exactly when. From what I've seen in videos, yeah, the game tells you ahead of time when you've already lost to the two 'henchmen' and it's all over but the jump scare, but Freddy can pretty much show up whenever he damn well wants to on Nights 4 and 5, and will jump scare whenever he wants to, too (though it looks like when he comes with the power off, it's not always the same amount of time between the screen going black and the jump scare). As for Foxy, it seems like his main purpose is that it's the developer telling you that you're playing the game wrong, from what I've seen.

I'm watching the video, because... Not done with it yet, but is that what all LP'ers are like? Do they all talk to the game? Answering all the questions....

I blame PewDiePie. Don't get me wrong, there have always been bad LPs, but it seems that most everyone just screams at their monitors now.

I'm sure, it just killed the horror for me. Except the end of the video. That would make a rock shit itself...

This is the only acceptable Let's Player to watch with a horror game like this. Usually this guy likes to make fun of games like this by using images of The Rock as a facecam, but apparently he likes this game enough he didn't bother. I have to say, it's his reaction to losing that really makes me giggle. (Spoiler: He doesn't yell or scream in the slightest.)
