This is not necessarily about what is the best game of all time, but what are the games are the most well rounded, by which I mean they had it all in terms of good graphics, good gameplay, innovation and good story? Games that may not quite be the best in any one category but were still solid in all of them?
An example of what I'm talking about is the original Max Payne, it had cutting edge graphics (at the time), great gameplay, an innovative and ground breaking feature with the bullet time and a compelling story, I wouldn't call Max Payne the best game of all time, but it is a classic and an example of a game with no weak links.
Half-Life 2 is another example, the graphics were absolutely jaw dropping at the time of release, the gameplay was excellent (provided of course you like first person shooters which I understand is an acquired taste), the physics engine was ground breaking and the sci fi story was really good.
Either of those games would be a good pick for most well rounded game of all time in my opinion, but what would be yours?

Cliched as it may be, I'm going to have to say Super Metroid. That's about as close to a 10/10 game as I've ever seen -- for the time especially, every single part of it was pretty much as good and as polished as you could get.

I'm gonna go with The Last of Us. Holy shit I love that game. I borrowed a friend's copy on the PS3 a year ago and now consider it up there with X-COM: UFO Defense and Resident Evil 4 as one of the best games ever. I wanna get my own copy someday.
If that didn't exist, I might be tempted to choose Resident Evil 4... although its story is pretty shitty. Yet it is amusing in a cheesy, silly way. At least the rest of RE4 is a fucking masterpiece.

I was going to say Resident Evil 4 and Super Metroid, but man Last of Us too. That game is incredible from start to finish. I hope Naughty Dog gets to do another game like it. Not necessarily a sequel, just another game with that scope and polish to it, I think part of it was that they had been working on it since Uncharted 2 was released and were able to really take their time (like with RE4). The original Final Fight and Dracula X are two other games I would say are completely flawless.

The Last of Us is another great pick, but see Resident Evil 4 is a perfect example of a great game that is not well rounded, because as great of a game as it is the story sucks, even compared to the prior games in the series the story was a disappointment because it had almost nothing to do with the prior game's storylines.
Man, I'm still pissed we never got to see Spencer castle.

How does RE4's story suck? It's cheesy goodness that's aware it's cheesy goodness. The other RE games take themselves too seriously, 4 has that wacky Capcom flavor usually reserved for Clover titles and SF. It has likable and entertaining characters, paces its plot well, has some of the most memorable villains in the series after Wesker, and is so endlessly quotable.
So, in other words, your opinion on RE4 ...no thanks, bro.
I'd argue Rayman Origins is the most near flawless game I've ever seen. Simple entertaining story to give context to the game, great humor, beautiful graphics, addictive gameplay, great level design, and a smooth difficulty curve that keeps you coming back with each failure. It's like what I always wanted from a Sonic game with a different art style, which is something I thought I'd never say about Rayman.

What I really like about Resident Evil 4's story is how it from average RE to briefly being kind of dark and serious and then starts smoothly getting more and more absurd as it goes on.

It's ALMOST flawless... but those damned treasure chest chases are the most aggravating things in the world. I've never wanted to slap a level designer across the face with a wet fish quite as much as I did while playing those particular stages. Another nomination from me would be Ys: The Oath in Felghana. For 2004, it's a very pretty game, its music is fantastic, its level designs nearly flawless, its challenge level high but fair, and its story minimalistic but well-written. It's about as well-rounded as they come, really, with nothing feeling extraneous or unnecessary. I'd argue the PSP version should qualify as well, for adding even further balance to the mix and being just as impressive on PSP in 2010 as it was on PC in 2004. -Tom

I laughed during the helicopter scene. Such a perfect, beautiful moment. Also, don't bring a gun to a knife fight.

Oh man yes MIIIIIIKE! That was beautiful, it is beautiful. Fun continuity error: After the QTE knife fight with Krauser Leon's knife is busted, so he takes Krauser's. But they didn't actually change the knife in-game afterwards. But even that just made me think of how Arnold shoots the same guy like four times in Commando. Have any of you played Rayman Legends? I read you could unlocked all of Rayman Origins' levels in it, does it basically just have Rayman Origins in it or are the levels in the game's new engine?

I want to play Legends, but I need a proper console. Origins is, like, my third or forth fave game. Forget if Odin Sphere is above it or not.

Oh yeah, I completely forgot about Undertale. I don't know if I can compare it to The Last of Us, because both are so different from each other, yet I think both games are absolute masterpieces, with great story, art design, music, gameplay, etc.

If you're a player that doesn't follow them, the game loses a lot of impact.

The story is goofy fun in it's own way but as a Resident Evil fan I was disappointed, as goofy as it also was I liked the tale of the Umbrella corporation, the T-Virus, the Spencer family, the Ashford family and so on, Resident Evil 4 was originally presented as a continuation of (and possibly a conclusion to) this story and instead it wasn't.

I'm going to throw in Metroid Prime, despite its Artifact Hunt (bleh), which is just a small part of a legendary game.
I'll also throw in the original Arkham Asylum which, like Prime, is a masterpiece of atmosphere. Granted, it feels incredibly stiff post-Arkham City, and I wouldn't deny that if I was in charge of re-releasing it I would oil the joints and throw in a few extra enemies to compensate, but I'm not going to let the high marks of the sequels overwhelm the superior atmosphere and balanced quality of the original.
