It was definitely a huge departure from where they were going so I can understand that. I'm excited to see what they eventually do with Resident Evil in general. Revelations 2 is really cool and I'm excited about the RE2 remake (though nothing has been said about it beyond it being a thing that is happening). I'm glad of glad they rolled with it though, I know there was the hook demon/hallucination version of RE4 and that did look interesting but realistically they were originally talking about RE4 having them going to Umbrella's main headquarters for the final battle. It probably would have ended up as an almost pure action game like the version that became Devil May Cry. I like that with RE4 they made this influential and fun niche of having more deliberate controls with weapons that have a nice feeling of impact rather than a more traditional shooter.
Still I can't dislike a game that pile of wood you can jump over like in Gymkata followed by seeing someone impaled to a wall with a pitchfork like in Gymkata.

I think Snake Eater gets a plus because everything seemed to gel. Also the REMake were every move felt mechanically meaningful. Super Metroid for having an open layout, great setup, and being an influential design. Kudos to Street Fighter 2 for basically a starting a genre and defining most of its rules.

I'm going to throw in Metroid Prime, despite its Artifact Hunt (bleh), which is just a small part of a legendary game. I'll also throw in the original Arkham Asylum which, like Prime, is a masterpiece of atmosphere. Granted, it feels incredibly stiff post-Arkham City, and I wouldn't deny that if I was in charge of re-releasing it I would oil the joints and throw in a few extra enemies to compensate, but I'm not going to let the high marks of the sequels overwhelm the superior atmosphere and balanced quality of the original. The only problem with Arkham Asylum is the bossfights which were lacking even when the game was new and was something they improved on greatly with City. Arkham Asylum and Arkham City are easily some of my favorite games of the 7th gen though. It was definitely a huge departure from where they were going so I can understand that. I'm excited to see what they eventually do with Resident Evil in general. I want to have hope for Resident Evil, Revelations 2 restored some faith in the series for me as well, but that fucking multiplayer shooter one that's coming out makes it hard, I like to think that was something already long in the pipeline and Capcom will never do anything like that again with the series. I think Snake Eater gets a plus because everything seemed to gel. Also the REMake were every move felt mechanically meaningful. Snake Eater and REmake are good choices!

Oh yeah the new shooter was totally going to be Operation Raccoon City 2 at some point. What a mistake on so many levels. It could be fun if it's basically a really fleshed out coop raid mode like Revelations but it's going to have to have like toooooooooooons of different costumes/weapons/characters that are different for that to keep people's attention right from the get go. Like if they drop it in the state of Street Fighter 5 where the core game is bare and you're expected to drop $$$ once a month it will die fast like Evolve.

Dark Souls is perfect and I'll hear nothing to the contrary

Dark Souls is perfect and I'll hear nothing to the contrary Slowballs combat is slowballs. I can't even believe how good Dark Souls is. I like all of From's adventure games even back to the original King's Field but Demon's Souls and Dark Souls 1 and Bloodborne are legit three of the best games ever made to me. I actually went so far as to pick Bloodborne/Dark Souls as one of the top 200 greatest video games of all time for the book.

Bloodborne took a while to grow on me but I would definitely put up there as well. It has some issues, but like any good game once you start to play on its terms and learn when you're defeated the entire game opens up.

I'd also have to say Siege, but the story of guys white masks have biochem weapons is just window dressing for the multiplayer and a 'campaign' which actually helps a new player learn the fundamentals/practice. I find it more entertaining then the 'campaigns' in an MMS (Modern Military Shooter) that plagued the last generation which consist of corridors that look like cityscapes, ridiculous scripted events, idiotic AI, and stories that fail to hit the mark.
Don't get me wrong, I thought Modern Warfare was a solid game, but when it gets pushed out every year something will be sacrificed. Had some fun with the Black Ops titles and MW2 as well. If your doing MP might as well make an MP only game with something useful for newer players rather than a 'cinematic' game that isn't backed by strong characters or narrative.

RE4 and Metal Gear Solid 3 are both really good, well-rounded games. Both of them have great variety in settings and things to do, and gave the players a lot of tools and ways to use them to accomplish things in different ways such that you could always come back to them to try something different.

If MGS3 had slightly better controls, I might consider it to be up there with games like Resident Evil 4 or The Last of Us, as far as how great I think it is overall.

It's without a doubt the most "Resident Evil in name only" title they've put out so far in the series which says a lot.

Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.
Awesome art style, brilliant story, engaging combats, lots of variety and little details like Luigi's side story.

I would say Super Mario Bros but its story isn't its strong point. So I would probably choose Mother or Chrono Trigger.

As an Italian guy from Brooklyn I'm probably biased but I think Super Mario Bros,' incredible character design makes up for its lack of plot nuance.
Speaking of which, the 3DS Luigi's Mansiom game is outstanding. It's kind of amazing how much it plays like the original Resident Evil but with goofy Mario series stuff instead of zombies.
