As I said I don't think it really works. It could with various tweaks though and I commend the game for trying something new.
I agree on Mania and S3&K striking a good balance, though I don't like the S3 special level that much so I don't find exploration as rewarding in that game.

Hot take: Sonic 1 (MD) had the best special levels. Not a high bar to clear.
I'm partial to the 3D special stages in Sonic Mania though.

Thanks for finally covering this series, hoping for the rest of Mega Drive games and Mania at least! Yeah, especially since the XBLA versions released individually around the same time, which are otherwise the same, can combine. Well, not really of course, the S&K release just has ROMs for S3&K and S2&K which become accessible if you have Sonic 2 and Sonic 3. S3&K was also ported to Retro Engine, like CD, 1 and 2, but Sega decided not to release it. They also left it out of their newest collection for some reason. Apparently there are some legal issues regarding the music? EDIT: more info here:

The games we've still got planned are: Sonic the Hedgehog 4 (ugh), Sonic the Fighters, SegaSonic the Hedgehog (arcade), Knuckles Chaotix, Sonic 3D Blast, and Sonic Mania. I think some of the 8-bit ones are being worked on too by a contributor but they haven't been submitted yet.

Maybe try or at least mention the Director's Cut of 3D Blast?
Also, no Spinball?

Director's Cut is mentioned for Sonic 3D Blast!
No Spinball (for now) because the project was initially just the numbered/mainline 2D games and I left contributors fill in whatever else they wanted (well and the arcade game, since that was previously covered in Sega Arcade Classics Vol. 2). And no wanted has wanted to write about Spinball (yet).

It mostly consists of elements borrowed from 2 and 3, so I think its inclusion would make sense.

If we ever get around to doing the Sonic Advance series, then Pocket Adventure will be included in there, since it's basically Sonic Advance 0.

In the PC Sonic & Knuckles Collection, what are the tracks that are replaced? I own that and it came with a copy of Sonic Screensaver (for creating them) and it includes what is in my memory, poor quality versions of the complete soundtrack. It'd be weird if it were there but not not in the game.

I like a lot of the ideas in Sonic's various racing games (the transformations in Racing Transformed, the drifting mechanic in Zero Gravity, hell I even kinda like Sonic R's gameplay), but it never seems that everything really comes together in these games. Even Transformed, which is pretty good, suffers from bad track and item design and just could benefit from being a more straight-forward kart racer. I think the Sega racers pull off risks so well. Riders does come with a learning curve and Transformed does has some rough spots switching vehicles. R is just messy. If there is a game that could benefit from a sequel it was that one. At least there was a similar game on XBOX called Mad Dash Racing that takes some inspiration (even has characters separated by traits like Sonic's cast!) Hot take: Sonic 1 (MD) had the best special levels. It's like Cameltry of course it is. I am no good at the halfpipe ones, though I am okay at Rush's variant. That and I like playing Sonic 2 with Tails tagging along. Blue Sphere is fun but some reason I suck at most of the Mania variants. I usued to clear these no problem... I like the ones that come attached to a villain. Fang in Triple Trouble, Johnny in Rush Adventure. I think there's potential there to just put rivals who want to fight over the emeralds.

I think some of the 8-bit ones are being worked on too by a contributor but they haven't been submitted yet. Just to clarify things, I'm the guy who's working on the reviews for the 8-bit games (I also reviewed 3D Blast, which I'm looking forward to see go up). My plan is to review every 8-bit game bar Spinball and Mean Bean Machine, since neither are from genres I'm into. So basically I'm doing: -Sonic 1 (review written) -Sonic 2 (review written) -Sonic Chaos (review written) -Sonic Triple Trouble (taking notes, playing through a 2nd time as Tails) -Sonic Blast (not yet played) -Tails Skypatrol (review written) -Tails Adventures (review half-written, needs cleaning up) -Sonic Drift 1 (not yet played) -Sonic Drift 2 (not yet played) -Sonic Labyrinth (not yet played) I'm gonna wait till I've written all the reviews before I submit them, since I want to make sure that there's no contradictions between them. I also like having more time to tweak them, just in case there's something I feel could be better written. I'm a little over the halfway point, which is pretty impressive given how I've been working on these for a month, so I should have these done in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to the rest of the reviews (and as someone who considersaid Sonic 4 to be an offensively bad game, I sympathise with the pain of having to play that thing again).

Anyway, I have no plans to cover the entire Sonic franchise, because it's not only way too huge, but the quality is also...inconsistent, to be kind. You are a way, way kinder man than I am. My recent foray into Sonic re-playing was short lived, because I wound up feeling like most of the classic Sonics are pretty basic platformers that soon get... almost as repetitive as Mega Man games honestly, except at least Mega Man tends to be short n' sweet and a feel of depth, Sonic tends to stay basic throughout and the later Genesis games feel like they go on too long (I remember an old review pointing out the fact that some levels in Sonic & Knuckles are basically impossible to beat before getting a Time Up unless you really hussle or use glitches and play absolutely perfectly). Sonic Adventure and the other 3D sonics can just screw themselves altogether. Seriously I don't get how anyone considered those games classics. YOU CAN FALL THROUGH THE FLOOR for fricks sake!
