Zelda II is definitely one I love too. I think its reputation has bettered over the years, but it's still kind of seen as one with a lot of problems, which isn't entirely fair. I get why people want a remake/reimagining of that game, but I don't agree that it needs one, or that it should have a remake because it's unplayable today. I'll say Skyward Sword also fits the bill. It reviewed very well upon release, but fans sure love ragging on it. Most of the time, people's complaints about that game are downright idiotic. Not to say you can't have legit complaints about the game. One day it'll get reappraised... Might as well mention Spirit Tracks while I'm at it. The DS Zeldas are so often ignored, not being really like the 2D Zeldas, but definitely not being like the 3D ones either. I really liked this one, though. As for something that's not Zelda, Mega Man & Bass. It's one of the best Mega Man games, but it's often overlooked or seen as kind of an oddball title, even though it's pretty much just classic Mega Man action. It's by far the best MM game of the 16- and 32-bit period, and that includes the X games. The SNES original needs to come to moderns systems. SMB2 - Does that one even count? Most people seem to think it's great including me If you're talking about the US Super Mario Bros. 2, that's definitely a classic. The Japanese SMB2, though, is very underrated I think.

Oh yeah I meant the US one. I do like the JP game but it also pulls some bullshit moves at times. Me and my brother actually beat that one before SMB1 on SNES back in the day.
The GBA ver. is cool except for those damn voices, I hate the voices!

Devil May Cry 2. It isn't as bad as people say it is! I definitely agree. I would even say that it has the strongest artistic surroundings in the series. They really nailed the gothic atmosphere.
regarding Castlevania: Circle of the Moon, I get the impression that it really depends on the system. It was quite dark in the original GBA handheld, but with the light function at the GBA SP handheld, it was easier to see the visuals. With the original GBA, it was kinda hard to see stuff.

Trails in the Sky FC
Most people that I talked about this game aren't really fond of the first game of the series. People vastly prefer SC, Cold Steel as well as the Crossbell games, but I really like the premise, the innocent classic adventure, instead of saving the world. I also like the personality of the main character. The chemistry of the group characters were also really unique. The char designs were also really unique and it is kinda sad to see that most of them got the "husbando/Waifu" treatment in the sequels. To me, it also has the strongest OST of the series. I also really like the banter. I am kinda surprised about the direction of the sequels. They feel very different.
Kingdom Hearts: CoM
I liked it, mostly due to its card battle system. I also liked the plot of the game. It "feels" self contained and most characters don't overstay their welcome. It also feels like a finished arc, which is something that I can't really say about the other games of the series. I only know the GBA version, thus I can't comment regarding the Playstation version.
Neverwinter Nights 2: (I am kinda cheating, because I am referring to DnD CRPGames)
I don't really know the view of the game in these days, but when I was 11 years old. The game got a bad reputation. I also played Baldurs Gate and the first Neverwinter Nights, but the singleplayer experience weren't really interesting to me in the Baldurs Gate series as well as the first Neverwinter Nights game. I really liked the presentation and the side characters in this game. They were quite colourful with their experience and banter.
Resident Evil 6
It is still a strong game, which really respect the series. One of the unique and strong feature is how content rich the game was, especially for a Triple AAA game. It has 4 campaigns. Many different campaign modes and dlc, almost all of them were free dlc through patches. Today, you get hardcore difficulty as a 10 € dlc. Resident Evil 6 provided it for free. It has a Horde mode, which feels always on point and not a slog like Revelation 2. I liked certain maps in Revelations 2, but some of them overstay their welcome.
Furthermore, you can unlock characters and costumes for horde mode, if you get good results. Besides, the game is packaged with beautiful directed cinematics and the visuals are always on point. They really took their time with the visuals of Shanghai. The quality is from the beginning until the end top notch. It doesn’t do the review focused friendly style where they put their most beautiful scenes in the beginning and in the last scene. Every scene has the strong quality through the game. It has the craziest and over the top moves like slide, roll around and you can do crazy gun slinger styles. It is in that regard one of the strongest whacky shooters like Binary Domain and Vanquish.
You can even parry!
Small, but effective mechanics. The action is always on point like an adored 90’s movie and it gives you crowd control horror, which is different like Resident Evil 4 woods horror or Resident Evil 5s sedate Africa setting sunshine horror. Each campaign has some unique things and doesn’t reuse enemies in every campaign. Resident Evil 6 pays much tribute to the series through their used themes and settings from the series. Furthermore, they have block buster interpretation of some magic moments of the series like the “snake” from Chris campaign. Leons campaign is a remix repackaging of his moments from Resident Evil 2 and 4, plus the unique Shanghai. At first, you have the outbreak, then you have the church scene like RE 4. Besides, they always tried to mix up the content in a campaign. Sometimes, you have turrets, and then you have walking parts with trains that can instant kill you. Sometimes, you have to protect your partner with a sniper and much, much more. It doesn’t only copy the series, they even put new stuff in it like a zombie dinosaur and a zombie shark. Revelations had a whale and Resident evil 4 had a “zombie loch ness monster.” They used the trope of Resident Evil monster, which is a feature from the whole series. Jakes campaign is another approach and an unique main character, because he is sassy and has an anti-hero vibe and pays a throwback to the 3rd game. He has ninja skills and it reminds me of an old side scrolling game, where you have Lava, antarctica stage like some old school games. The co op is really well and the AI never disappoints like Resident Evil 5 in some scenes/moments. Coop was well thought in the 6th games and it doesn’t feel tacked. They pepped the story, since they used in the Jakes campaign two people, which had parents as villains in former titles. They are surviving together and have something like a development. A reason for coop not like Sheva x Chris loose friendship moments. Chris Redfield campaign is very diverse. At first, you have “Call of Duty” esque scene, but then you fight against monster, which reminds of 00’s soldier versus monster movies like the Doom movie and other similar ones. They payed tribute to other series from other companies with their Ace Combat 2 gameplay scene and the one Sega rally chase gameplay scene. Chris story might be a bit of a rehash from V, but they changed it after a while in a right direction. He starts to become more blinded by revenge through his hate. Pierce, which was a well-liked character from the manga got a major involvement and played the soldier he was without to disrespect his Captain. They showed it in a good way how a person goes down in the evil path. The characters have something like a development, which is kinda a rare thing in the series. Chris makes mistakes and after that he relearned his lesson, which is great in this dire state where every main character has to be awesome in every way. It was really refreshing to see that in an AAA game. I recently played the remake of the resident evil 2, but can't really remember the ending. It was kinda weird. The ending of Chris campaign is a very beautiful and strong in comparison.
One of the reasons, why coop mode in Resident evil 6 works so well. Jakes campaign is kind of a campaign for male/female coop and Chris campaign for boys love/strong friendship coop. The story is awful, but this is nothing new in the series. The only distinct feature from Ada campaign was how similar it felt in certain places to Resident Evil 4 from the presence and has the old school key card hunt section. They had the chance to go full action or full scary. They did it with Resident evil 6 with the action part and 7 got the scary part. It is a stronger experience as the Revelation series, which tries both, but in the end it doesn’t reach it. I totally understand that people who liked Survival horror like the very first game will be disappointed, but it still a good game and doesn't really deserve to be the black sheep of the series. It still has the cheeky charisma that the series had in all the years and time. It doesn’t have cynism in the story, when you finished it. The story has a simple message. Overcome your depression/trials and just do it!
There are more black sheep examples, but I don't really feel creative at the moment.

^^ That's the only defense of RE 6 I think I've ever seen. Makes me want to play it. I played the demo years ago and didn't care for it.
I'm not sure if it's a black sheep or just considered a middle of the road title but I really like Mega Man 6. I've seen people be pretty dismissive of it before.
I get the criticisms - it's formulaic and the weapons suck. However, while everything else - graphics, music, level design are pretty average for the series - the Rush Adapter is actually a pretty fun gimmick to use, to the point where it pretty much invalidates the Robot weapons. It also allows you to pick up tons of extra lives and energy tanks. It puts this game over MM 4 and 5 for me.

jackcaeylin - what you write is always so infectious to me. I have never had a desire to try Resident Evil 6 until now. For Neverwinter Nights 2 I think one of the reasons for its perception is the change in developer's. Moving forward that did remind me of another black sheep entry that part of the reason for its reputation is the change in developer and that is Batman: Arkham Origins. Of course the other reason is that it uses the same world from its predecessor but that doesn't stop it from being a quality game. The core Arkham experience is still there for people who wanted more from this series and the storyline is more interesting than other entries to me. I found it a little rough around the edges due to a couple of crashes (played on wii u) but otherwise I rate it closely to Arkham City.

In my experience, the most maligned classic Mega Man games are 5 and II for Game Boy, and I like both! Until I'm playing them, when I remember what they're actually like! But as soon as I'm done I decide I like them again! This probably says something about me.

The GB V is my absolute favorite in the NES style! It's a quirky game that sets itself apart from the others.
A few other Mega Mans:
7 - I love the cartoony graphics. It's an absolutely excellent game for one made in three months. It very well may be the one I've played the most.
Mega Man & Bass - I get it for the GBA version because of the reduced view and poor translation, but the SFC game is solid.
X6 - I had originally skipped out on this one until the X Legacy Collection because of the poor reception, but I liked it overall. It was nice to see stage changes return, and the part system is better than in X5. I wouldn't defend it too much, but I get the feeling that it being past the point that Inafune wanted to end the series added to the negative reaction.

II for the Game Boy is pretty funky though.

My name is retr0gamer and I'm a castlevania the adventure apologist. All the criticism against is is valid but I still think it's a fun game with a great soundtrack.
As for resident evil 6, don't believe the apologists. It's gross, one of the worst games I played in the last generation with Chris's campaign being by far the worst thing I've played all gen.
There's actually a really complex combat system with devil may cry level depth of you want to sink your teeth into the mercenaries mode but the single player is a complete shit sandwich.

Also, I remember DMC 2’s camera being an issue for a lot of people.

I don't know if your now playing list is up to date but it says you're playing BoF: Dragon Quarter. That would be a fit, if you like it, wouldn't it?

I don't know if your now playing list is up to date but it says you're playing BoF: Dragon Quarter. That would be a fit, if you like it, wouldn't it? I updated it during the week for the first time in about 4 years. It would definitely be a black sheep of the family as it plays nothing like the previous games. But with the previous games being so different from each other I don't really see what people's issues with it there are. It's really more a game ahead of its time. It's got lots of rogue-lite features that nobody at the time had experienced before and it really annoyed people that didn't understand it. However if it came out now with rogue elements being so popular it would go down a storm with critics. I think capcom are missing the boat a bit not doing a remaster release. As for Resident Evil 6, trust me that game is baaaaaad. And the worst thing is 'content rich' means the bad last so long. I went through it out of curiosity and there's nothing good about it. Chris's campaign is a complete stinker. It should be interesting but it's this utter jank fest where you are scrounging for ammo from respawning enemies and the whole thing just does not work. There's a boss in a church and another that you fight from a train that are god awful and feel like a boss from a 90's PC FPS in how broken they feel. And some people might say that Leon's campaign is good. It's really not. Said church boss is from that campaign and while it's not the worst of the campaigns it's still really bad. It's a game where capcom tried to make the biggest and best game in the franchise but also tried to appeal to absolutely everyone so they could recoup the development costs and made a game that appeals to nobody except the hardcore mercenaries mode fans and misguided people like jackcaeylin

You clearly haven't been around here for too long have you? I may not be an apologist but any chance I get, I will defend Castlevania The Adventure to the death. Admittedly it does have some technical flaws, but I enjoy its dense atmosphere and creative level design. (I can also finish it with my eyes closed.)
Other black sheep:
Donkey Kong Country 3 (SN) - Why people think that this is the weakest entry in the series is beyond me. I like it even better than the previous titles. The same goes for its soundtrack. It tends to be more ambient-heavy and less upbeat than DKC 1 and 2 (and also less David Wise), which might be why it's considered a "lesser" soundtrack overall. But I think it's beautiful.
Mega Man II (GB) - The only thing I will criticise about it is the music, which sounds a bit off (thankfully there is a fanmade patch to fix that). Otherwise it's a perfectly fine game.
Metal Gear Solid The Twin Snakes (GC) - Another game that unfortunately does not run quite as smoothly as it should (compared to MGS2 on the PS2). And while the original will always have a special place in my heart, I might like Twin Snakes just as much. It adds some quality of life improvements, naturally much cleaner graphics and the cutscenes are delightfully over the top. God, I love those.
Speaking of which...
Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon (CDi) - I've never played these games, so it'll be just about those infamous cutscenes. Yes the models are inconsistent, the constant zooming in and out is excessive, dialogue cheesy and the voice acting hammy. But it's just so damn charming, it oozes personality! And it's not like these cutscens were devoid of effort or ambition. Animation is fucking hard and here it looks actually pretty fluid. The zooming and rotating effects are achieved by drawing frame by frame - that is by no means lazy. There are also no compression artefacts, whatsoever. Also those voice actors really tried, dammit!
And now compare all that to the lifeless majority of PS1 cutscenes.

I've actually played those zelda games and they aren't bad. Not amazing but probabyl the best games on the cdi and perfectly fine.
I know for a long time there was no decent emulator to play the. And the only one had to be played with a mouse so can imagine a lot of people only experienced them that way. I even had trouble trying to play them on cdi due to it being next to impossible to find one with a working drive. My tutorial was and possibly still is the only one online about replacing the cd drive.
