This article will always require updating, I think. (: By September, you'll also have Ys I & II Chronicles and Ys VII for PSP to add.

Yeah, the PC version...didn't have so hot a soundtrack. I think it was actually released in NA by Broderbund, but I don't know if they ported it. And Ys is one of those articles I don't mind updating.

If you mean the DOS version, then I believe it was Sierra who released it stateside. Unless I'm thinking of Sorcerian...
I don't know, I've never played either in their DOS iterations. (:
EDIT: Never mind, I was thinking of Sorcerian after all. Ys DOS was indeed Broderbund.

Kinda totally off-topic, but I've been in the mood for more Ys stuff having gone through the console versions... Do the PC updates ever appear on eBay? Or the PS2 updates, for that matter? This stuff seems rather difficult to track down, especially in the UK. And while I'm here, I'd like to have a little rant: it seems Oath in Felghana was being translated by that absolute cock Nightwolve. I wish that guy would just drop off the face of the translation community - he is unstable and damaging to the movement of fan translations. All of his projects he starts with high promises, so no one else wants to take on that game, and then he bitches no one is giving him money before pulling all of his patches like some kind of child. And we lose everything. Fucking toys, right out of the fucking pram. Taken from his blog, ranting about people not paying him: Oh god, and he just keeps going and going. Hundreds of people happily share their ability to translate so people can enjoy these games, and he goes absolutely batshit insane. I find it especially annoying since I like the Ys series, and he is damaging the community. People should just ostrecise him, and continue to translate stuff he's already worked on. I feel sorry for Deuce (Nightwolve's Eng/JP translator), since he seems like a cool guy. Kurt, do you or anyone else have the patch for Felghana by any chance? I've heard it did the rounds on torrents for a while. That lazy shmuck Nightwolve didn't it even finish it, so some guy created a supplementary patch, and I'd like to get hold of both should I ever manage to get hold of the game. There is something on his site, but there is no way in hell I'm touching anything from his crazy blog. Probably has viruses up the wazoo. EDIT: Also, Napishtim on PSP... Turns out the PSP version is also a bit censored, so I reckon I'll go for the PS2 version... Except it turns out they removed the Japanese voice acting from the UK version of the PS2 port, along with, apparently, the anime cinemas and other bits and pieces. This might want confirming and adding to the article, since as a UK resident (god I hate this island sometimes), I'm now forced to import the surprisingly pricey US version. Or find a place selling the PC version, since thankfully the people who did the patch for that have released it freely.

I don't think the US version is too pricey - I see it pop up every once in awhile at Gamestop for like $10. I can grab you a copy if you'd like.
As for the patch...yeah, Nightwolve is kinda crazy, I stumbled upon his blog a little while ago. I think he actually released a virus in one of his Felghana patches, so yeah, I'd stay away. I know I have a safe patch around here somewhere - I'll have to dig it up.

I managed to track one down (I think, I've not tested it, but it's virus free at least). I also found a place to download Napishtim. It's an image, which I hope I can burn and then install, because deamon tools once screwed up my comp, so I should have that covered. But thanks for the offer - I may still take you up on it if I have no luck getting this running.

I'm sure glad that didn't happen to me, and I haven't talked to anyone with that problem, of course most people are a little more discrete about what they patch and don't patch. That's really too bad, because from what I have played using his patch, it was a good job.

This might be interesting: Apparently, there was a CD version announced for the Korean PC DOS Ys 2 special, which was supposed to feature voiced dialogue and enhanced music. It got cancelled, though.

At the end of that article it says they were planning to convert Ys 4 next, but that it wasn't decided yet whether they follow Hudson's or Falcom's version of the story.

I now read the whole thing. I supposed that the music add-on would be about higher quality music, but it was meant to be a midi-pack to listen to the tunes seperately.
The CD version was said to come on 2 cds and feature full CD audio.
The voice pack is also advertised as an add-on for the disk version.
Also of note is the fact that the artwork is done by Lee Myungjin (of Eotcheonji... Jeonyeok and Ragnarok fame, see my article on the former)

So is Ys Chronicles coming out on PSP in English? We don't know the answer yet. Let's see if this will make that happen. Only time will tell.

Is this the official new topic for Ys? Cuz I finally updated this with info on the PSP releases, including a review of Ys Seven: www.hardcoregaming101.net/ys/ys.htmOther improvements include: -Some spellchecking! I realized I spelled "Yunica" from Ys Origin as "Yurica" most of the time. D'oh! -A few more Ys II Special screenshots courtesy of MP83. -Slightly expanded/rewritten intro -A small blurb on Ys vs Sora no Kiseki I guess Ys II Special now works better on DOSBox than it did like four years ago, but I still haven't been able to go back and play it. Anyone want to do a quick paragraph or two expansion of it?

Thanks for the updated article. I read through it and there's a few things I want to comment about: "A second Falcom Classics package was released in 1998, featuring a remake of Ys II, as well as an older Falcom game called Asteka II: The Temple of the Sun. It seems like Falcom put a bit more effort into this one - there's some voices, as well as an anime intro, and even scenes from the original Ys game with voiceovers, as is Falcom were making an apology." |
Wasn't Falcom Classics I & II (Saturn) developed by Victor Company of Japan (JVC) and only licensed by Falcom? Also, typo. "A few years after the PS2/PSP ports, a fan translation was released for the PC version. Translated again by Deuce, it's an entirely different script from Konami's, and allows English speakers to experience the original versions in their unaltered glory." |
Unless there's an English patch with Deuce's translations that I'm not aware of, the patch you're talking about uses Radamantys' translation, which I think used Konami's English script as a base. www.figlidigaucci.eu/index.php?pid=19Typos: "A PC version was Ys Chronicles was released on the PC, but it's a shameful port that just takes the PSP game, cramped resolution and all, and sticks it on the computer." |
"This is the first game (outside of the Japan-only mobile games) where you can actually player as Dogi, which long time fans should enjoy." |
By the way, I really have to give credit to Salamander for those Ys II Special screenshots. I merely directed you to them. seldane.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=ysII&thread=2350&page=8#46073
