Is there an easy way to tell between the pre-rendered and hand-drawn sprites? Nu Gundam should be all hand-drawn since it's been the same since GTBM1. It's easy to tell in Killer Instinct but it's tough to see here besides some shininess in some "parts." Are all the segmented sprites pre-rendered or only some of them? Yeah, Nu Gundam just doesn't look that much like the hand-drawn counterpart, not to mention they made it taller. Pre-renderedHand-drawnAlso, they actually made 3D models of all the Suits from the game for portraits, so why not just use those for the sprites? In TBM1 and TBM2, they all looked like artwork or incredibly-well-done model shots.

Oh wow, I never noticed that before, ha. And yeah, the backdrop 3D (model?) art for the MS in GTBM were awesome.

More than a little surprised nobody's mentioned Day of the Tentacle. You just can't get this kind of visual charm from 3D games.

On that note, I must propose The Curse of Monkey Island.

Marginwalker: So, it's a sprite battle ye want? ... Well, too bad. I give up. I don't have the know-how to rip sprites. I thought the videos did them justice, but if you say not, then I suppose we'll just have to agree to disagree. (: I still think PopoloCrois II looks better overall than even Princess Crown and Odin Sphere, though (both of which I consider to be among the most beautiful 2D games I've ever played)... there's just something innately charming about the way its sprites are drawn. You can feel the love in them. If you get a chance to actually play the game sometime (the original, not the PSP remake), I urge you to do so, as it's quite outstanding. Ganelon: I've played the PS2 game to completion, and never really noticed any difference in the way it looked compared to the PC version. Then again, I was playing on an SDTV, and I'm also not much of a videophile, so I probably just wasn't looking hard enough. (: The only real issue I had with the game visually was that the screen would sometimes flicker REALLY BADLY when character portraits were on-screen. Aside from that, though, I thought it looked great! (: As for the PSP version, I'm willing to bet it'll look really nice. The PSP is quite a capable little system, and Falcom have a LOT of experience with it at this point (Ys I & II Chronicles is what, their 8th in-house PSP port?). I'm sure it won't look as good as the PC version, granted... but it should still look really nice. Zwei!! PC versus PSP is a good example, I think... the PSP version doesn't have the "crispness" of its PC counterpart, but it's still just as beautiful to look at. (: -Tom

Robotron 2084.
It's as good as video games have ever needed to look.

Even though the 32X gets a lot of flack, Kuckles' Chaotix and Tempo look like pure radness:

Tempo : That screenshot really doesn't do this game justice. The animation is really what makes the graphics so great.

You can't bring up the 32X without mentioning Kolibri. That game is just sinfully beautiful.

get out On the subject of Kolibri, if you ask the Penny Arcade guys, it still is the best hummingbird-based shooter on the 32X.

You know, while I'm thinking of it... I'd rank Zwei!! as one of the best-looking 2D games I've ever played, too. www.rpgfan.com/pics/zwei/index.htmlGranted, its animations aren't very good - very few frames used for walking and fighting, and not many custom frames for anything else, either - but I just find the style to be visually very appealing, and I love how saturated and overtly cute everything is. (: I also have a pet peeve about circle shadows, and Zwei!! is one of the *only* 2D games I know of where circle shadows are not used, ever, for anything. Every last character has a person-shaped shadow underneath them at all times. And I highly respect that. (: -Tom

Ooh, good thoughts. And for that matter, too, Flashback was a pretty damn nice-looking game.
