I'm in the "I <3 Yoshi's Island" camp. It's actually one of my favorite not RPG games ever. Something about it is really magical for me. Not to mention the music is totally awesome.

I suck at the game, but it is pretty fun. I mean, I beat it long ago, so I musta liked it something.

Yeah, I played KoF 12 with Kurt last weekend and it definitely takes the cake as the best looking 2D game in my book. So much of the animation is so smooth and well-shadowed that you would swear it's 3D, but isn't.

If you're annoyed by Baby Mario's crying, you clearly aren't playing right. Seriously, that's the noise you hear if you're screwing up badly.
And yes, Yoshi's Island is my favorite 16-bit era platformer. And damn, do the graphics still rock.

I would definitely say Keio Flying Squadron 2 on the Saturn. It floored me back in the day, and it just looks better as it ages. Some of the best animation around, in my opinion. Absolutely timeless. (Brilliant soundtrack too!!!)
I also actually really love the look of The Dishwasher on Live Arcade. A little rough around the edges, but it has a style all of it's own (at least within the world of games). Otherwise, it kinda reminds me of the creepy black and red drawings in The Mothman Prophecies... I've always adored that kind of styled-sketch look.
Also Guilty Gear for sure... it's an absolute no brainer.
Pick any number of games on the Saturn. It was a phenomenal 2D machine.
Also, the intro for Ristar on the Mega Drive is stunning. Best. Color. Work. Ever.

People hate Yoshi's Island?! It makes people doubt their own sexuality, feel like they're being treated like children and punishes the player harder than any other game for screwing up. Yeah, people hate this game.

yeah, yoshi's island made me think i was attracted to dinosaurs for a while. it was a scary, confusing time. almost as bad as when the game told me to go to my room. i had no idea games could treat me that way or punish me so hard. i still like yoshi's island, though.
As for KOF XII, I checked out that "dot art" page on the SNK site and took a look at the characters. It does nothing fancy in the way of sprite art, but the characters are so well composed, drawn and colored just right that it ends up looking phenomenal. I also noticed if there's a shadow, there's purple. It must be the game's favorite color.

yeah, yoshi's island made me feel obligated to dress up in a pink tutu, prance around the neighbouring area, swinging my hips at gruff men all the while sucking a banana in a suggestive manner for a while. it was a scary, confusing time. almost as bad as when i realised that the music sounded like i was being put to bed and i was disappointed when my cradle wasnt big enough for me anymore. when i started it up i had no idea a game could make me want to tear my ears off so hard that id actually do it. i still like yoshi's island, though. Little bit of cleanup here.

lol, man, you saw right through me. it's a good winding down game i play in the evening when i want a good night's rest in my cradle after tearing off my ears while sucking a banana. nothing can put me to sleep like yoshi's island (TM).

The gameplay and level designs weren't as tight as the original games, but I'd love to see more games that look like Mega Man 8.
