I really like that ship with the variable frame. It's pretty cool to see actual cosmetic changes for different speeds.

One of the Image Fight fighters can damage enemies with its thrusters. Cool detail.

Have you guys seen R-Type Final's cameo ships? VERY cool. There's Mr. Heli, the Image Fight ships, Gallop, etc... Ship 069 - Cross the Rubicon, is in my top favorites. The 8 I always have up for launch are... 001 Arrow-Head 069 Cross the Rubicon 077 Digitalius III 080 Mad Forest III 086 Bydo System ã 093 Sexy Dynamite II 095 Claw Claw 101 Grand Finale

I always felt that the ships in the B-tree were the most interesting to play as. I also liked the Albatross set (including the transforming ship) and the Tears Shower. I find that in Final, I generally prefer ships with the 'burst-style' Wave Cannons for their limited ability to shoot through walls and into the background.
Sweet Memories is cool, too, if only because it comes equipped with a gun powered by nightmares.

YES. I love the Nightmare R-Series. Sweet Memories's wave cannon is incredibly useful too. The Transformer R series was pretty neat, although they're not as useful as most of the other ships.
Also, the Ragnarok 2 is insane. A level 4 charge is enough to kill nearly everything in the game. Nevermind that it pierces all objects as well.

Anybody legitimately beat the latest stage on 1 life? I'm getting tired of training for it in Score Attack mode...

There are three last stages, do you mean F-3?

I guess... the one with the year counter and no continues/1 life. Bitch stage. Yeah, that's F-3. I'm not particularly proud to admit it, but I eventually cheated my way through that stage. In retrospect, this was probably the way to do it, because I probably never would have beaten it legitimately. The end of the stage, for what it's worth, is pretty lame- it's not much more than a "YOU ARE A GREAT PLAYER" screen, which is really pretty cheesy for the amount of effort beating that stage requires. - HC

Well it took me about 4 years but I have all 101 ships unlocked now. Yipee. Also, regarding stage F-C; it's not nearly as bad when you can freely choose the wave cannon, force and bits to be used. I can only beat it on normal difficulty, though. :[
R-Type Final really shines on "R-Typer" difficulty. There are a lot more instances where I had to crunch myself in a corner or use some awkward technique (like flying close to an enemy not to get hit) much like the older games.

I'll have to try that sometime. One of my most vivid memories of R-Type Delta was squeezing against the walls near the end of the fourth stage as those blue, robotic enemies edged past and my roommates looked on in awe. - HC

Has anyone actually beaten F-3 in the normal game mode? If you go through a final stage in score attack, you don't get to see the ending, at least for F-1.

You don't get any achievements by playing Score Attack, but you can train on that bitch F-3 stage. It will take you a while to memorize the stage, but it's doable. I can get 3/4 of the way through playing fairly but the last couple of enemy waves are just really cheap shots. Got tired of it and used the invincibility cheat. Beating it isn't a requirement for any unlockables, by the way, so don't sweat over it.

Even though it lacks the strategy of the previous R-Type games, R-Type Leo is still damned good. ("Leo" is the codename of a project for GET NAMES.)
