Since Gallop was mentioned, why not make a note of Blazing Star? And for that matter, pointing out that both Pulstar and Blazing Star were made by people who worked on R-Type? The Pulstar review that's currently up is a little misinformed in that category.
Also: You fail it! Your skill is not enough, see you next time, bye-bye!

I should probably remove Gallop, actually. It's not really related (except for the ship appearing in Final) and Shell covered it better in the Irem arcade article. As for Blazing Star, the style of game is completely different, despite it being made by the same team as Pulstar (and even having the ship/pilot, although I guess that's worth mentioning.) At the time I wrote it though, I hadn't played much Blazing Star. I've since corrected that. Was Pulstar really made by the same team as R-Type? I know a lot of Irem folks left for companies like Nazca, but did any move over to Aicom/Yumekobo? EDIT: shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?t=8277&highlight=&sid=ee01345d711e2c8262ccefc1367d456dSeems like no one can confirm. The reason I'm so picky about this stuff stems from the whole big Treasure/Konami debacle. It's been a long standing belief that Treasure was formed by the teams who made all of the Castlevanias/Contra but formed their own company because they were sick of sequels. This is mostly BS that started with Gamefan at least a decade ago. While Treasure was formed by many Konami members, they were hardly higher ups, consisting mostly of a few guys from the Gameboy Castlevania team and other random games like the SNES Tiny Toons game. This one mistruth was parroted for years and years, without any real research behind it, and I'm sure a lot of people still believe it. The same thing here. Wikipedia mentions that it's by the same team as R-Type, but the article it references make no such claim. Since there's no credits in the original game, there's no way to track it. I'd rather stay out of that territory than continue another unfounded rumor.

I understand, but I'd like to add that this rumour has as good a place in the Treasure articles as this does above the mention of Pulstar. I also tried googling "aicom" and all I came up with was a hardware manufacturer... :/

Original R-Type has credits, you just have to look at the high scores screen. They carried this over in Pulstar I believe (if that was it). Or Blazing Star or one of them, the default initials are all numbers that are code for the developers' initials.

Here's me bitching again. I just played through R-Type Final for the second time and decided to read the R-Type article. Couldn't help but notice that some stuff was left out most likely due to space constrains, but it just feels incomplete to me. I don't know if it's worth your time including, but here are some bits I think should be mentioned:
-R-Type Final's low difficulty level. It took me two days to beat it for the first time, 3 hours to beat it the second time with an alternate ship (Daedalus) and through alternate levels. I never beat 1, 2, Delta or Leo; but I did beat 3 a bunch of times even though it is still harder than Final.
-You should mention some of Final's cameo ships, at the least. The Image Fight fighter, Delta's returning ships and pods, Bydo systems, Mr. Heli, and other interesting ones are what give the game its replay value. If fighting games have character descriptions, R-Type should have ship descriptions too.
-Maybe add info (and screenshots) to each games' different force pods, ships (in the case of Final, only the most notable, of course), and "Delta" bombs. They sure add a lot to each game's replay and are main features in 3, Leo, Delta, and Final.
-No more "back to the beginning of the stage" bullshit on Final. That's a feature right there. Unlimited continues after a while too.
Thanks for your attention.

Yeah the R-Type article was one of the first ones on the site, back when I wanted to do more capsule-type reviews. As a result, some of them are a bit short. (Ditto with Final Fight and Alex Kidd.) I want to polish some of them up a bit, but I really need to go back and play Final again.
That Tactics game (Command, I think) is coming to the States in a few months, so I'll probably look at it again then.

Another big point I just thought of: walls don't kill you on Final, which makes it a lot easier. I don't remember if Delta had that too.

Final isn't as good of a shooter as the rest of the series, but I've found that the story is extremely enjoyable. All the endings are open ended, and the brief bits before each mission contributes to the rest of the story as well. I think the history of each ship is probably the best part for me, as I find that the most interesting.

I just wish Final wont really be the final, shooter I mean. But the trend seems to be that every time you make a strategy game based on a shmup, it's the nail in the coffin (see Parodius).

The manual clearly states that they meant for Final to be, well, the Final game.
