Good point. Sometimes I forget that the old LD arcade games were the originators of the QTE.

... holy crap, muteKi's right. But I'm not too bad with QTEs nowadays... except that I'm absolutely terrible at Dragon's Lair. I don't know how to explain that.

No one is good at Dragon's Lair...NO ONE. I have the Blu-Ray version and no matter what I did the fucking game did what it wanted and from what I understand that's exactly what the arcade machine did, too. However, the BR has an awesome longplay mode where you can just watch the game played (with all of the death animations, too!).
I def don't like over-use and poor implementation of QTE's (RE: Umbrella Chronicles was a game that used QTE's in a terrible way, requiring both players to do a QTE correctly to progress), but the QTE's in Vanquish are so damn fun that I really have to say I'm glad they were there. There's nothing quite like spiking a missile back into an enemy like it were a football.

The home versions by Digital Leisure control like ass and are barely playable (not that there was much control to begin with), even with a PS2 controller or whatever. The iphone versions even less so. The arcade games were a lot more responsive to your inputs at least. That being said, I own a lot of them . I kind of like the LD games where they just overlaid game graphics over some FMV backgrounds, like Bega's Battle and Mach 3.

Wow, seems like a lifetime ago, but there was a brief period where that seemed to be making a comeback. FFVIII and Fear Effect both made heavy useage of FMV scenes behind realtime graphics.

Wow, seems like a lifetime ago, but there was a brief period where that seemed to be making a comeback. FFVIII and Fear Effect both made heavy useage of FMV scenes behind realtime graphics. Didn't Parasite Eve 2 do that also? Man, I can't believe it's been 10 years since those. Did you play/watch LD games much when you were a kid? My parents took me to arcades a lot even when I was 2, so I've got a soft spot for LD games. One of the LD arcade games I thought was pretty cool was Thayer's Quest; it was essentially a Sierra-type adventure game (although simplified) that used animated footage. It had a keyboard with the different items listed, etc.....anyway it was re-released by Interplay about 15 years ago as Kingdom: The Far Reaches. I guess on topic about the QTE's in Splatterhouse, they're not any worse than the ones in say....RE4 (nothing approaching the fucking Knife Fight level of frustration yet), although I will say that the QTEs are the most challenging part of the boss fights--one fuck up and it's back to the last checkpoint. The Splatterkills are pretty easy once you memorize which one Rick's going for (except for the up/down combo one, I always fuck it up). EDIT: BTW, won some kind of DLC from the facebook page. I guess Facebook's good for something besides discrediting me as an expert witness (hasn't happened yet, but...).

Unfortunately, no. We were broke as a joke growing up, so I only ever got to see Dragon's Lair in the arcade. One thing that bugs me as I get older...as much as I know about games, there's always some vein of information I never got to experience (Sega CD, import Saturn games, PC gaming in the 80s, etc).
Oh, and the Facebook game for Assassin's Creed is an absolute waste of time. My wife has put hundreds of hours into maxing it out for me, and all we got out of it were two lousy capes that confer absolutely no statistical bonuses. FAIL.

Anyone know if this game has multiple endings or something?

Nope, no multiple endings. The team wanted to do one for continuity purposes in the event of a sequel.

Nope, no multiple endings. The team wanted to do one for continuity purposes in the event of a sequel. That's one of my few complaints about the game (aside from glitches, which are to be expected in any western game and aren't anywhere near the shit that Obsidian or Bethesda manage to get away with). I don't see how it would have killed the narrative, because the Shadow Hearts games managed just fine by picking a "canon" ending (usually the "bad ending") and running with it in the sequel. Although it's classic horror movie, the combination of having a cliffhanger ending and an uncertain future for the series kind of sucks. Oh well, it is what it is. Oh well, I bought my two copies, here's hoping people can see through the usual bullshit and give it a try (protip: people suck and probably won't).

I hope there's a sequel, not only because I enjoyed this game for what it was but because I would love a Final Fight style co-op story mode where 2P is Demon-possessed Jennifer, I dunno, wanting something from Rick and the Mask in exchange for her safety. Team Splatterkills alone would be worth it. I'm really cheesed off about the blatant lie on there being no QTEs but it's a fun and worthwhile beat-em-up anyway. A sequel untainted by Bottle Rocket's bullshit would be even better.

Brain Dead 13 is a great Dragon's Lair style game. Short and sweet, and hilarious.

Brain Dead 13 is a great Dragon's Lair style game. Short and sweet, and hilarious. It was also surprisingly interactive. Granted, a lot of it was you walking into an instant death trap, but it was as close to a non-linear LD game or interactive movie as you could get. I'd love to try out the 3DO version, I hear that the graphics were significantly better than the others since it was rendered real time using proto-Flash vector graphics rather than FMV clips.

Bit of a necro-bump here, but I didn't see the point in starting a new thread for this. Today, after ten years online, I shut down West Mansion - but not before posting what could be the definitive article on the history of the new game. It covers as much of the development history as possible, what might have been if the game had been a success and the possibility of a sequel. Take a look: splatterhouse.kontek.net/requiem.html
