Cheez. I think every single one of you is taking this liiittle too hard. To see a series you grew up with degenerate into such tripe? It's impossible to take it too hard. The only things left would be for Konami's CEO to lose a sexual harassment suit, turn all their series into annual blockbusters, and require you to buy a $100 controller to play half of them, then they'd be worse than Activision.

A little sad to see that most people here are not even giving the game a fighting chance. I bought it and has played it for a few hours with a friend and I think it's a lot of fun. Sure, it can't be compared to Symphony of the Night or any of the DS and GBA-castlevanias but that's not what they are going for. It should be compared to games like Diablo if anything. You might need to play the same level a few times to get some good loot, some money to buy equipment. You might also need to find out routes to get the best loot. The time limit isn't a big deal, we have never been close to running out of time. I guess it's just there to drive things forward if you're playing with strangers on XBLA.
Atleast give the game a chance before totally dismissing it. It's a lot better than most other crap on XBLA and co-op is _always_ fun.

Cheez. I think every single one of you is taking this liiittle too hard. It isn't that big of a deal on its own, but we haven't gotten a decent Castlevania game since Order of Ecclesia.

So this game is evidently designed specifically to only be played in groups. I, not being a multiplayer person, couldn't possibly enjoy this game as a result. Even if I wanted to just see what the game is like online, I can't, because Konami made the genius move of eliminating multiplayer support from the demo. I personally am not going to gamble $15 (remember I'm on unemployment money at the moment; that's an astronomical sum to me!) on a game that I'm not even sure is going to be worth it!

Atleast give the game a chance before totally dismissing it. It's a lot better than most other crap on XBLA and co-op is _always_ fun. I gave it a chance. I played the demo like 25 minutes. It sucks. It is garbage. I am not going to spend FIFTEEN DOLLARS on an entirely recycled game with no effort at all put into it to give it any further of a chance, I already know exactly what the experience is going to be like - crap. If the game were like 5-8 bucks and I had one or two good friends who were planning on getting it I would consider getting it, but for two to three times that price, screw it, it's ridiculous. Buying this game is like sending a letter to Konami with money in the envelope telling them you want their future products to have this little effort and quality put into them. By purchasing this you are practically furthering the destruction of this franchise. Why does this game deserve people trying to like it who are already confident it's shit? No one would be sticking up for this game if it didn't have Castlevania in the title - especially since this is the only series that can get away with stealing so much from other games. It's lackluster, boring and, worst of all, just outright steals almost everything. It's not homage, it's not tribute, it's a freaking low-down way of getting people's money because they see 2D graphics and the "Castlevania" name and will buy it no matter what and then justify to all their friends why Castlevania is still good. This game is a complete and utter disgrace. You could dismiss Castlevania Judgment for being a ridiculous spin-off, but THIS is the future of 2D Castlevania if you're willing to support it. And if this is the future, buddy, consider the series dead to me. I'm sorry if this is bitter and I'm sorry if I sound aggressive at you (it's really about this game and the general state of affairs of the Castlevania series), but when I see one of my favorite franchises getting this treatment, I get pissed off. I may have personally hated Mega Man 10, but for fuck's sake at least it tried to do something. This is just outright terrible. P.S. Co-op is fun because you're playing with friends. Subtract the friends and add in random people and this game is garbage again. When you're only enjoying co-op with friends, you might as well be playing anything with co-op, and there are so many better games out there that this is seriously bottom-of-the-barrel even in that regard.

To expand a bit more on that comment, I'll step back for a second. It's a lot better than most other crap on XBLA and co-op is _always_ fun. Co-op, indeed, is, especially if it's multiplayer with other people in the same room; this is at least partially because you can get the full range of their emotions while playing with you -- the frustration, the amazement, the joy, etc. I prefer this immensely over playing online, which is a relatively sterile experience (well, not always, but regularly). Now, the thing is, given that fact, I've had fun being social with other people just playing pass-the-controller over some borderline unplayable games. Considering it doesn't take much in that regard, it highlights the fact that the $15 price tag is steep when the main appeal is the social aspect and not the content of the game itself, especially when most CV fans have seen all this stuff before. Is it meant to be sold to people who haven't been playing the CV games, as a vague sort of primer? Then why is the difficulty so unbalanced? Is the game meant to be based around the multiplayer experience? Why isn't that part of the demo? As it stands, all the demo shows is that there's no difficulty scaling, which makes it even more annoying. Is it meant to show off gorgeous graphics at 1080p? Then why is everything in it stuff that we've seen before? While we're at it, why is it so hard to zoom in and out? Hell, that a commercial designed-for-multiplayer game would not have a scaled single-player mode or drop-in/drop-out is pretty pathetic. Get a silly little bargain-bin game instead and invite some friends over to suffer through it with you. You'll save money and probably have about as much fun.

I bought the game, played it with 3 friends and 3 randoms and it was quite fun. Certain levels required players to be scattered around different rooms of the map to activate levers and switches in order to finish. By all means the game doesnt have enough content to justify the 15 dollar price tag. This game is not bad its just not great either. I guess Konami decided to try something completely different instead of bringing us another symphony of the night sequel. I completely understand why most of you are bashing this game but its really not that bad as long as you have friends to play it with.
I played Lord of the Shadows at E3 and it felt like a God of War clone with a slap of Goth paint over it. I enjoyed the game but thats because I'm a fan of the Rygar/God of War type of games.

I agree. They act as if the series has consistently been excellent since its inception when there's been much worse Castlevania games than HD. Which ones? Were any of them made from 100% recycled material from previous games? I'll admit, my comment was intentionally a bit outlandish on purpose. Also, I am admittedly not the biggest Castlevania fan. IE: I didn't really grow up with it, but I do enjoy it once in a while. IIRC a few of the gameboy ones, wii, wiiware, DS, and N64 ones were well-known for being pretty terrible. Perhaps someone more familiar with the series can point them out. As far as the whole carbon-copy thing, I do not know. HoD doesn't necessarily ruin my childhood or anything. It doesn't feel like it's worth 1200 points, but it doesn't seem like the worst thing ever like the internet purports it to be. Nostalgia is a weird thing. Devs think they're doing a good job making a game with nostalgic characters and different things like sound effects, but it seems like they struck a nerve with this one.

but its really not that bad as long as you have friends to play it with. Which is precisely the problem for players like me who don't enjoy playing on random public servers. Legacy of Darkness, anyone? I hear that's the game Castlevania 64 should have been. Granted, I haven't been able to check it out, because my emulator does not like it, and the cartridge costs far more than I can afford lately. (And in case you're not just talking about the graphics, which modern Castlevania has time limits and coop play? I haven't played the game by the way, and I'm sure it's not very good, but you know.) The base concept of the game is certainly new to the series, but the fact that the level design is essentially Symphony re-shuffled, the bosses and playable characters are all borrowed, and many of the gameplay elements that made the source games so appealing are completely missing (no subweapons to my knowledge, experience/leveling seems absent, as are the additional abilities like double-jumping - seems like everybody starts with said abilities from the very beginning, making for a relatively unfulfilling experience)...I didn't care so much about the recycled stuff in the DS games, but this game takes the cake because it offers absolutely nothing new, but rather borrows everything from the older games and deletes features for no apparent reason. It strikes me as if somebody were making a fan-game in Game Maker and somehow got Konami to publish it.
