Then buy it. There's no middle ground here.

I don't think anyone cares.
Edit: Piracy happens and you should be happy that at the least, in this instance it is leading to a sale.

Isn't the fact he's standing on the proverbial middle ground sorta proving it does exist?

Well, you make a good case for piracy, at least. Can't say I approve, but I'm glad you enjoyed the game and will most likely be purchasing it in the future. (: -Tom Classiest post ever on HG101.

Just as a happy funtime mod note: piracy argument should stay classy. Let's be nice, alright? It's starting to sound a bit heated in here and I don't wanna have to get my mod tools out. Let's be excellent to each other. Carry on now!

Isn't the fact he's standing on the proverbial middle ground sorta proving it does exist? "Oh, I'm just pirating it for now, I'm totally going to buy it later." Riiight. I don't mean to be a jerk about this, but double standards kind of get to me, especially when I prefer to purchase games to support developers.

Does that same argument also apply to borrowing the game from a friend? Folks like me don't have any money (not most of the time) and the decision to buy a game is not made lightly. Therefore, if there is even the slightest doubt over whether a game is good, often times folks like me will just pass it over for something that's "guaranteed" to be good. This game (apparently?) has no playable demo available, which makes the decision to buy it that much more difficult.
Whether pirated or borrowed/rented, by your own logic there is no sale there and the developer is still not being supported. So therefore, would that make borrowing and renting morally wrong as well?

That's not the same thing at all.

Probably not the thread to discuss moral relativism, guys.

For Christ's sake, I frankly don't give a shit about whether you pirate a game or not, but how come every time someone pirates a game it's the first thing they mention? Then it completely derails the thread into this same stupid discussion over and over again. Take it somewhere else, this is the Ys thread, so talk about Ys.
I'm at the final boss right now on Hard mode and I'm slowly working it down. Like most bosses I'm gonna have to probably retry it about 80 times, but it's gonna happen, dammit.

At the risk of rekindling this argument, I'd actually like to play devil's advocate for a second, and mention one thing I've learned by working here. Piracy hurts our sales... but no more so than buying the game used, renting it, or borrowing it. In fact, I actually think we may lose more money from used game sales than we do from piracy! Now, that's not to say I'm CONDONING piracy, because I'm not. I don't like it one bit. BUT... seeing the effect it has on the industry, versus the similar effect so many other morally and legally ACCEPTABLE things have on the industry, I'm a little more forgiving of it than I used to be. The difference between piracy and these other alternatives? If you buy the game used, the store you bought it from is making money. If you rent a game, the rental place is making money. If you pirate the game... NO ONE is making money. You are stealing -- no ifs, ands, or buts. So yeah. Piracy still sucks. But honestly, I'd make just as big a frowny face if I heard you bought the game used as I am from hearing you pirated it. And at least now, there's a chance you'll actually purchase it new in the future. So please, do me a favor, and when you DO buy it, buy it new, OK? That'll make up for the piracy, as far as I'm concerned! -Tom

Also, what are the double standards presented here by him? I agree that it bothers me he enjoyed it enough to want to buy it and doesn't own it yet, but I think you're overreacting a bit given your inclination to being passionate about stuff like this receiving localizations.

Alright, enough. Atma already asked nicely to dial back on the piracy talk, and I'm going to ask again, this time a little less nicely. This thread is supposed to be about Ys, not the gray-and-gray morality of piracy which is a guaranteed hot button issue in every game forum ever.
So let's keep the oil out of the pool, so to speak. Continue to discuss Ys as a game, not as a controversy. Thanks in advance to those who will do so.

Sorry to have contributed to this, but I felt that was something I needed to say, and I was hoping it might cool the fires a bit. (: I'm just glad you guys are enjoying the game, no matter HOW you enjoy it! (: As a professional in the industry, I should care how you acquire it... but as an Ys fanboy, I'm just like, "EEEEEEEEE, it's an Ys game that I worked on! What do you think of it? Is it AWESOME?!" Here's something I've been somewhat hesitant to admit, but finally broke down and admitted on ALoY last week: You know the Christof escort mission? If you don't, it's an optional escort mission available only prior to or during the Abandoned Mine part of the game -- talk to Fran at the castle gate to get it, then pick up Christof at the Illburns Ruins entrance. Anyway, as part of this quest, you find yourself waiting inside Valestein Castle for the countess to show up and personally thank you. And there's a nameless guard who announces the countess' entrance -- and randomly, that line of dialogue is voice-acted, despite the guard having no name and no other lines. And yeah... the voice-actor for that one line was me. (: I hinted at that earlier in the thread, but yeah... I'm too excited about it not to outright admit it. (: -Tom
