What about Soul Calibur for Dreamcast? Does that count? I don't think so, Soul Calibur was the sequel to Soul Blade (whether or not the people buying the Dreamcast for Soul Calibur knew it was a sequel is debatable). Of course, Soul Calibur itself wasn't 'new' per se, because it had been in the arcades for a while. Thinking back to the PS2's release, I remember my friend bought his for Dynasty Warriors 2 (which was a new IP, the 2 in the title was more or less a marketing tactic). He also had SSX, but I'm not sure that pushed many PS2 units (fantastic series, though). For the PSP, Lumines was one of those games that I know everyone WANTED to play, but wouldn't buy a PSP to play it. Unfortunately that's the reality for a lot of PSP games (see angry PS3 owners who rage every time a cool game is announced for PSP). Now, if you want to expand the definition of 'launch title', Dance Central is one phenomenal new IP. I mean, if I had had the money & space, I would have gone out and bought a 360 w/Kinect after playing that at my friend's house.

If you're going to say that Soul Calibur wasn't new, then Dynasty Warriors shouldn't be counted, either. The "2" wasn't a marketing ploy, it was truly the sequel to a shitty Romance of the Three Kingdoms fighting game on the PS1. In turn, that was a spin-off of the RoTK strategy games.

Panzer Dragoon was a Saturn launch title if I remember correctly.

I don't know if I'd call Dynasty Warriors a spin off of the ROTK games or the fighting game, that's like saying KOEI has the exclusive rights to San Guo Zhi (the book that all those games were based off of). I mean, there are hundreds of games based off the book and historical text. I'm calling it a marketing ploy because they added the number "2" for name recognition only. Similar to Seiken Densetsu 1 being titled 'Final Fantasy Adventure', SaGa 1 being titled Final Fantasy Legend, and so forth. Of course that's just me, I don't want to get into an argument or anything (please don't hurt me!!)
Now, I hate to be a super-jerk (I've only posted 3 times here, and already spewing nerd garbage!), but Tokyo Xtreme Racer, even as one of my all-time favorite games, was not a new IP either. There were 6 (!) titles that came before it, and as much as I love Genki, I must to say that they absolutely sucked. At least, compared to the legend that began with the Dreamcast entries!
Come to think of it, the Shutokou Battle/Tokyo Xtreme Racer series would make an awesome HG101 article, but I certainly don't have access to the one Saturn game.

Pretty sure it wasn't available at launch. Great game but yeeeah, I think I am the only person alive to prefer Soul Blade/Edge - the music was amazing (3 seperate OST's in game before that kinda thing became popular? Yes please!), the multiple endings and story mode was also amazing too- each character had a personalised story mode rather than the "pick a character and try this mission" approach applied since. *sigh* One day my Soul Blade boner will eventually come down edit oh and I am so late to the party- sorry for missing the "it wasn't a launch title" confirmation. I guess I owe you a Dr. Pepper.

I'm still puzzling over why Ridge Racer have 7 launch games. Is it a guaranteed hit in Japan? Have many of the Ridge Racer games been all that good? I really liked Type 4, it had a soundtrack worthy of the better Tekken games and it must have been the biggest hit of them all, probably a lot to do with the CGI intro with Reiko, which was extremely impressive at the time but it was not a launch game. They used Reiko in a PS2 tech demo, and like a lot of tech demos, there was never any games that ever looked as good as it did.
I thought the PS1 Dynasty Warriors was really fun.
Certainly not in Japan, but a lot of people bought PS2 for Timesplitters, because of the Goldeneye/Perfect Dark association. It was the game my brother was most excited about.
I'm sure The Bouncer was supposed to be a launch game that was seen as a reason to buy PS2 and everyone will remember how journalists got carried away and assumed out of excitement that the gameplay would be just like the cutscenes and then slated it for not delivering what they wrongly assumed it promised. Dicks! I'm not saying it was a great game, but a lot of journalists got extremely carried away. Even games today dont match up to what they were expecting...
...you still cant get games that do all this.
There is a lesser known game called Chaindive that appealed to my desire for the sort of power and freedom you always want in an action game, I have no idea why this is so obscure, it looks really fun...

Dude, I have NEVER heard of Chaindive! It looks a little repetitive, but I'm loving that music. It stands in great contrast with the gloomy post-apocalyptic landscape, ahaha.
Funny you should mention Timesplitters and The Bouncer, my friend (the same one who bought the PS2 for Dynasty Warriors 2) bought Timesplitters, and was going to buy The Bouncer (he was very VERY hyped about it), but never bothered because of the reviews. I think he even rented it once, but found it to be pretty awful. It's a shame though, Square had awesome ideas back then. Heck, they have awesome ideas now, but it's sad that they have to tie everything in with 'Final Fantasy' somehow.
Now if you want to play a really fun Three Kingdoms fighting game, try Sango Fighter 2, which I believe is DOS (I know the first one was at least).

I thought the PS1 Dynasty Warriors was really fun. It was on par with Masters of Teras Kasi, in my eyes, but whatever floats your boat.

Same here... it's pretty much down to whether or not you like the characters. If I weren't a Star Wars fan, I probably would have cried at how bad Teras Kasi was. But because I am a fan, it was all,"OH LOOK, BOBA FETT!! I remember my friend scratched his disc to hell (coincidentally, the same friend I played Sango Fighter with), and we were frantically trying to revive it with toothpaste (?).

Ha ha, actually I meant it was an example of a shitty game coming out of a good license. In theory, a Star Wars fighter sounds like a great idea. What would that really mean, though? You can't have Star Wars without Jedi, but no regular person could fight a Jedi. Chewbacca against Darth Vader? Really?
The attack animations were godawful, as well. I seem to remember Han Solo using some kind of kick to his opponent's ankle. TOTAL DEVASTATION!
Dynasty Warriors didn't have Jedi, but the action moved very slowly. I don't know if it was trying to be the Three Kingdoms version of Bushido Blade or what, but the end product just didn't deliver.
Kind of hilarious that we all ended up with the Dynasty Warriors games of today, though. They're sort of like Koei's Harvest Moon at this point, keeping the company afloat while they steadfastly refuse to produce anything else of value. I want Liberty or Death 2, goddammit!

The thing that bothered me about Teras Kasi was that lightsabers did not kill people in one hit. I think Sangoku Musou (or Dynasty Warriors in the US) was trying to be like Soul Blade. Soul Blade was out in the arcades just long enough for Koei to think, "Oh yeah, we could do this..." Or maybe Battle Arena Toshinden hahaha.
My favorite Koei game is Warship Gunner 2 (the first and its expansion are OK, but not nearly as polished as the second). It would be a damn shame if they never made another one. Unlike the Musou series (which has like a billion superior clones now), Warship Gunner is pretty freakin' original. Plus it's not like a super-Japanese game or anything, it's basically the [Michael Bay movie] of naval combat games. There would be mass appeal if they did a 360/PS3 version.

I don't know if I've said this in here or not, but I fucking hate it when people go "shmups (or run 'n guns) are too hard for normal players" or "are only for azns." It drives me nuts. The genre definitely has a learning curve more steep than most other genres, but they're not "that" difficult.

I'd say that music games and shmups go hand in hand. If you have the reflexes for Expert guitar on Rock Band, you should be able to handle the average danmaku. Both genres are 100% about timing.
