SourceSince that article was posted, it's been confirmed that the character (I won't describe the character for anti-spoiler's sake, but if you're at all familiar with the Mass Effect lore then it's a huge one) will cost $10 to download, even if you buy the game new. This isn't like Zaeed in Mass Effect 2, where you only have to pay for him if you buy a used copy. Everyone has to pay 800 MSP in order to have this character in your game, unless you've already bought the Collector's Edition (which is $20 extra). I just preordered the standard edition of Mass Effect 3 a couple days ago, but this is really disappointing to hear. I'm not sure if I want to keep my preorder going or not.

There's really no excuse to start a new thread when the "old" one has still been active only a couple of days before.

Well I was avoiding this thread because I want to avoid spoilers for the game as much as possible; hence why I made it a separate thread.

FFS. So actually buying second-hand is best, since I can save $10 or more there, and then afterwards have to buy extra intrinsic content?
I hate this shit. Yesterday I played a 20 year old game and loved it. In 20 years no one can play ME3 because integral content won't exist as part of the disc, and I doubt EA/MS/Sony will keep the servers alive.
It's hilarious, because in the same way you have to struggle with older OS, or antiquated equipment to play some retro titles authentically, in 20 years we'll be trading PS2 and X360 harddrives because they still have fabled DLC attached to them.

Added to all the DLC content that already comes with the regular game, it's probably gonna set you back quite a bit more.

I know I'm always chiming in on DLC...so why break the habit- what a joke! I don't mind the likes of expansions and extra missions coming months later...but day 1 DLC is a complete con- either sell the full game from launch or don't sell it at all. Imagine buying a car full price and then be told "oh you'll have to pay a further payment if you'd like to get full access to the rest of your gears".

Whatever. I'll play the game without the DLC, or not at all. Just pretend it doesn't exist.

The Zaeed stuff was some of the best content in ME2 sadly.

While it sucks, it's not much different from how Kasumi was DLC-only (then again, she's one of my favorite characters because of her backstabbing attacks). Here's hoping that said character's another person that's just nice to have on your team, but doesn't really hurt the story if they're not around. I also echo Sketcz' sentiment about the DLC - it's sad that large parts of games will be unplayable in the near future because of DLC-related bullshit. At the same time they'll also be unplayable because we'll all be dead or in abject poverty with the way things are going. But hey, nostalgia counts for something. (EDIT: also, I love how what Bill's saying in English is nothing like what he's saying in Moonspeak).

Day-1 DLC is a cancer on the gaming industry meant to drive pre-orders and nothing more.
Pre-orders are a cancer on the gaming industry, as well.
EDIT : Oh, if only that DLC character really WAS Douglas Quaid...
YOU BLEW MY COVER!!! YOOUUUU BLEEWWWW MYYYYY COVERRRRRRR!

It's not like any of the characters are really plot important in Mass Effect.

Casey Hudson on Day 1 DLC and why it isn't as TEH EVILZ!!!! as everyone thinks it is:
This is all on his Twitter.
Though if given the choice of getting bits of DLC for $10 at a time or getting roughly the same amount of content about a year later for the price of a slightly less-than-the-price-of-a-full-game expansion pack, I'll choose the former. I've never really gotten the bitching and whining about content DLC when it's more or less just expansion packs with staggered release schedules. The real quality expansion packs like NWN2's Mask of the Betrayer (which was better than the original, mediocre game) and Half-Life: Opposing Force were more the exception to the rule.

I still have my preorder going, for the moment at least. That explanation from Casey Hudson's twitter seems legitimate to me, but I'm still not coming to a decision quite yet on what I'll do. Mass Effect 3 is one of the few games that I care enough about to preorder, and it's still something I really want to play. As far as this DLC goes, I might download it or I might wait until later. Perhaps waiting for a sale would be a good idea, but who knows when that would happen

I'm really not sure how important this character is actually going to be. He could provide some really cool additions to the ME universe's lore (and I'm a total lore whore and love the ME universe so I'll definitely get it), but if he was THAT important a character I don't think that he would just be DLC. Maybe he was cutting room floor content that they managed to get back in.
Actually, that's something I do like about DLC: this sorta stuff can find its way back into the game. In the ye olden days people pine for, it would more often than not just disappear forever. Especially for console games where the concept of the expansion pack was just about unheard of.
