All aboard the hype train! Choo choo!
The release is only 2-3 months away for Nintendo's next step on portable gaming. Now with more powerful hardware and 3D gimmick. And a lineup of upcoming games which include lots of familiar franchises from lots of familiar publishers.
The 3D worries me a bit. Like every gimmick, I expect to see quick cash-ins and feeble attempts to use it (like in todays cinema, or so I've heard). Nintendo's already taken the opportunity to return classic titles to 3D. I could see it working well on Star Fox or F-Zero though, but other than that, enjoy your re-releases. Im sticking to cartridges.
I've been thinking about getting it, if not at lauch day then as soon as possible, because of the lot of games that are coming up. And If Im not happy with those, I can always check the old DS catalog which is still pretty much un-explored territory for me. Anyone else planning on getting it?
Oh, and I've heard about some 3DS event being streamed on the net around these days? Anyone got link or more info about it?

I'm obligated to buy it solely for Mega Man Legends 3. Everything else released for the system could be total garbage and I would still buy it for Legends 3.
I imagine I'll play the vast majority of the games released for the system with the 3D effect turned off. I expect a few clever developers, and probably some first-party titles, will use it in fun interesting ways, and for every other game it will be either harmless fluff or obnoxious nuisance.

Pretty much an inevitability I'll get one, though I'll probably turn the 3D off for most of the games. But considering the sheer power of the tech under the hood, some amazing-looking games should be made with or without the 3D. Watch as the next Castlevania made for it still reuses sprites from Rondo of Blood.

Man, has there been a single 2D Castlevania since Rondo of Blood that HASN'T stolen sprites from it?

I'm really looking forward to the 3DS, but I don't care about the rereleases that'll be coming to it. I've never even played Star Fox 64 more than once (I did pick up the cartridge a few years ago though), but I don't care to get either it or Ocarina of Time, or Metal Gear Solid 3. I am looking forward to the new games that'll release for it though, like Paper Mario and the Resident Evil games (provided Capcom doesn't screw them up) and Mega Man Legends 3 <3 and however the Contra game turns out. Even if nothing else comes out for it, it'll be a must-buy for me.
I'm not obsessed with 3D at all, but I'm looking forward to seeing it in action. I'm hoping it'll improve the way games like 3D platformers play, with the added depth perception that comes with it. I'm definitely not getting the system just for the 3D display though. It's how nearly everything about the system (especially the lineup!) sounds so awesome that makes me want one.

Man, has there been a single 2D Castlevania since Rondo of Blood that HASN'T stolen sprites from it? Bloodlines is about 5 months older than it.

Man, has there been a single 2D Castlevania since Rondo of Blood that HASN'T stolen sprites from it? I think Circle of the Moon and Aria of Sorrow had completely original sprites, though a lot of the designs were obviously inspired by that game and SotN.

You guys, the 3D of the 3DS is not the same crappy 3D you see on the movies. Granted, some devs will take the easy way out and use the crappy movies 3D.
But the 3D effect of the 3DS is not so much about things popping out of the screen, but about depth. Basically it's as if you could put your finger through the screen and touch the background deep inside the system.
Miyamoto has said on numerous occasions that with the 3D effect, the problem that polygonal games have when it comes to judging distances (specially when jumping) will be a thing of the past.

On January 19th, Nintendo's supposed to spill the beans about whatever it hasn't revealed about the system, including the price and release date for the US in NYC, and Europe too supposedly (something in Amsterdam, I think)
I'm actually a bit of a 3D enthusiast myself (I love the effect and the feeling you're actually there) and can't wait to see what developers do with it. I'm getting it and most of the lineup at launch depending on the quality of the titles. I can't wait to play MGS3 for the first time.
Also, if it's not region free, I'm gonna rage. Hopefully Nintendo does the right thing.

I'll definitely be picking this up. I'm just wondering if I should wait to trade in my DS Lite to see if theirs any special discounts or just simply trade it in right now. I'm really dreading the price point of this new handheld though. I'm seriously hoping it's not as large as a consoles as previously rumored.

Also, if it's not region free, I'm gonna rage. Hopefully Nintendo does the right thing. Odds are it will not be region free given that the DSi introduced a region lock. If that is the case I hope an intrepid hacker disables it. I'm cautiously optimistic. This might be the first Nintendo handheld I buy first generation. The thing that concerns me the most is the 3D feature. Most likely it will end up like the touchscreen on the DS: a gimmick abused on release and then quickly forgotten. I also expect this thing to see a lot of shovelware and sloppy ports.

Also, if it's not region free, I'm gonna rage. Hopefully Nintendo does the right thing. Retail games should be region free, online features and downloadable stuff will not. Just as the DSi (I know the DSi doesn't have retail games, but still). I'm seriously hoping it's not as large as a consoles as previously rumored. It's about the same size as a DSi. Touchscreen hasn't been forgotten. It just has been more intelligently used on the type of games that require it and not shoehorned in every kind of game like when it came out. Sholvelware and sloppy ports? That's hardly something the 3DS invented or the Wii/DS. That has been massively around since the PS1/GBC days. Blame nickelodeon games, movie studios making games or heavily licensing them, Disney making their own crappy games and crappy mobile-type games selling like hotcakes. That's with online on, brightness and 3D at max. Which is basically the same battery time the DSi has when you leave the brightness at max.
