Andriasang's reporting all models will have 3G. Siliconera's reporting a separate wi-fi only SKU. Who do I believe!?!

Also bad news as well. I heard it's not region free.

If all models don't have 3G, that means games mostly won't be written to expect always-on internet, so that could have an impact on the kind of games we see.

I though 3G and Wifi was just diffrernt net conection types so why would it cost more to have one than the other? I doubt this is going to be Region locked either if Sony wanted to do that they would of done it with Both the PS3 and PSP as well.
Coukld be for Movie playback but no hardly anyone uses either of them for that.

You run wifi out of your house with your own equipment (or the coffee shop or whatever). You run 3G off the cellphone network, which the cellphone company generally requires you to pay them for.
As to why the system itself would cost more, they'll presumably all have wifi, but the 3G model would also have 3G. So they have to put in both. And they can charge more because it's an additional feature.

I can't think of a single reason I would want 3G for a gaming device.

I can't think of a single reason I would want 3G for a gaming device. Because that way you can tell your friends, "IT ONLY DOES EVERYTHING."

I'm expecting the PSP2 to be pricey, but I love my PSP, so I'm hoping it will at least be in a range affordable for mere mortals. 2nd Job Machine: Potaburu! People will take up a 3rd job just to afford the NGP... just like they took up that 2nd job to work more hours to pay for a PS3 at launch...

I can't think of a single reason I would want 3G for a gaming device. Same here. I hope they have a minimalist version that lacks all of the unnecessary bullshit. I really just want the device to play games.

I can't think of a single reason I would want 3G for a gaming device. Because you want to play Monster Hunter on the train to work, with your friends, who are riding different trains to work.

I suppose there's that, which is why a 3G model isn't a terrible option, but I like it remaining just that - an option. Most people I know, myself included, use their portable systems as though they were consoles, rarely taking them out of the house, aside from maybe the occasional long trip via plane or something. I suspect that an awful lot of the portables in US are treated that way... taken on trips, maybe hauled to a buddy's place from time to time, but otherwise used just like a console.
I'm guessing that 3G is a feature most of the userbase won't have any pressing need for. Unless you spend a significant amount of time commuting and wanting to play online games during that time, it's just not very attractive given the costs involved. Online gaming from home can be done just as effectively (and significantly more cheaply) with the combination of a wireless router + broadband internet service, so for all of us who don't spend much time commuting with our hands free, 3G is useless.

I saw some comments from Kojima the other day where he was implying that you'll be able to use the 3G to connect to some kind of cloud gaming system that will let you play PS3 games on the PSP2.

I take my handhelds everywhere, and it is much easier for me to play and beat games on a handheld than on a PS3. Even when I'm at home, I have to share the TVs. I get a lot of gaming done on my lunch hour, waiting in line at my kid's school, waiting at the doctor's office, waiting at the oil change place, etc. I can play through an RPG about every month or so just using my lunch hour. If they're really going to offer some kind of workable cloud gaming that lets me take PS3 games on the go, I could see paying for it.

If the 3G were mandatory, or at least assumed to always be on, certain types of game features become possible. Location based features for one. Collaborative stuff - think Demon's Souls but maybe more advanced. Content that updates dynamically over time, instead of being pushed as a monolithic patch or update.
Not to say they can't or won't do some of these things anyway, but there's a certain liberating aspect for game developers if they can assume there's an always-on internet connection anytime the system is turned on.
Location-based stuff kind of creeps me out though, and I can probably live without the other stuff as well..
I probably do most of my portable gaming at home, but I do take it on the go a fair amount. I'm not much of one for multiplayer, so wifi would probably be sufficient for me, unless there were some really compelling game that made me think otherwise. I don't think I've ever played a multiplayer game on my psp.
